RIP dear Alan. I only learned of your passing yesterday. That's the trouble with news these days. Full of non events and the important stuff gets pushed aside. Thanks for all the amazing music.
Rankine was a great story teller. I could listen to him all night long. I would have loved to have had the pleasure of having a few beers with him. I was saddened to hear he died recently. He was such a gifted, charming soul.
I would love to see the whole of this interview. But Alan, if you are watching, you are the type of person I'd love to chat with over a beer. Its something of a tragedy, you and Bill had something really amazing, but so shortlived. I guess better short than never at all.
Unfortunately we are losing more and more good musicians. I grew up with The Associates. What remains? Good memories and to know...... What a loss.... ♥
Just came across this. Thanks for the upload. I knew Alan well, and remember when he got that Afghan coat (didn't mention the Cuban Heels that he wore with it!). Before Caspian, he played in a band called Jerkin'Crocus (later changed to Trampus), who played rock/prog rock stuff at school gigs etc. and he was an amazing guitarist even then. I jammed with him a few times and I couldn't lace his boots on ability. Great guy, never changed a bit even after his rise to fame, always had time for a blether, and will be missed by many. Would love to see the whole interview.
what an interesting and articulate man , i was dj`ing when party fears was released and tbh , disliked it , weird vocals and didnt get it. however , was one of those you need to hear a few times, a grower .. then loved it. was all over club country. brilliant. ... `the fault is i can find no fault in you`
Just started to relisten to the Associates. Even better than I remember, Sulk and Fourth Drawer Down. I just heard Apollo 440's track Billy did the vocals on, superb. That's what got listen to the Associates again. My brother was sign to Beggers and for a time John Murphy used to play with his band. He'd always tell us stories about the Associates what they got up to in the recording studio.
Wonderful and captivating to see Mr Rankine. An innovator and formidible stella talent along with Mr Mackenzie. I will never forget the drunken nights I spent in my youth listening to Sulk. 10 out of 10 every step of the way. Thank you.
I have to confess that I wouldn't have recognised Alan in this video but I also have to confess that I didn't know Billy was gay, so what do I know? BTW there is a shit-hot John Peel Associates session available on You Tube. Probably the best I have ever heard from them.
What - you didn't know Billy was gay ? What are you on ? Have you ever seen him being interviewed ? He's as camp as a row of tents - camper than Boy George. What do you know, indeed !
@@nigelsim941 I haven't read that anywhere else, but even if it's true, so what ? Philip Schofield has 2 daughters but he is gay. There are many gay /bi-sexual men who have had dalliances with women.
@@k.avilla8061 Years ago I was certain that it was revealed though someone, that Billy did have a son as a young man. Your reply made me check to verify this and now I can't find anything to substantiate it.
RIP Alan, what a funny guy you was, you must have had a hell of a time with Bill in the band. Obviously talented musician too. I hope you having fun with Bill and having a catch up after all these years. xx
What a legend.....could watch much more of this.......Got to see if i can find my copy of the " Glamour Chase" .......so funny and self effacing and not a sign of pretension from a man who with Billy created some of the most genius music ever created.......always loved the Boys Keep Swinging story............inspiring

RIP Alan , another huge talent gone 😢
I've shared many a drink with Alan and he was always a super cool guy. He never suffered fools gladly, however. xxx Alan
Goodbye Alan - and thanks for making all that devastatingly superb music.
Excellent comment

One of my favourite people. Hilarious.
Great interview, wish there were more by this interesting man. Impossibly handsome back in the day. More chat, please, Mr Rankine.

I didn't like a lot of the 80s music - but the Associates are a band I still listen to this day!

RIP Alan. Such a legacy you leave but like Billy, far too early
Beautiful boys, rest in peace

He would never admit it publicly though. And why should he.

Billy also had a son...

RIP Alan 💛💛
Oh dear god ... Just read on BBC website that Alan died....R.I.P mate...
Party Fears Two, Club Country, 18 Carat Love Affair lit up TOTP. Far ahead of 'the competition ". RIP Alan.
Very entertaining 👍
This is brilliant but where the holy heck is part 2 ???
In his younger days, he looked like a young Dougray Scott, I don't care what anybody says! RIP Alan xx
Is there a part 2 to this interview..? It's great to see Alan, and hear some of his stories again..!
Mate we did Boys in two days! Remember it like it was yesterday,
Bill decked 4 guys !! That was in Dundee !!
i really wanna hear this "caspian" he talks about, are there any bootlegs or anything?
A good laugh. R.I.P
why does the video keep cutting out?
Where's part 2?
Who keeps turning the lights off?
my dad once saw billy while walking around dundee and also was on the same school bus as his brother
That song, that band. Too young to go Alan, far too young.
Gone too soon
Stay off the cola Alan 😂
Not as bad as Kasabian -- one of the worst bands ever! :0)
Night Alan. Sleep tight. x
