@@brb8407 Yeah. The Catholic Church was bathed in money at the time, so they basically paid Michelangelo to spend his life working on his commissions, even causing neck issues for the poor guy with his frescos. You’ll see just how rich they were by how much real gold lines the inside of the chapel.

I dont know where people started mixing it up started either. Plus, like you've said in the past, art is a luxury item people dont NEED it.
The time thing too is annoying. When they're either not an artist, or used to the commission side of the art community I guess it's hard for them to understand the concept of how long it might take for people to finish work, especially if they're back logged. (Plus needing money to live so having to take more commissions)

Frankly I feel like a lot of the "free commissions" line of thought stuff is affected by sites like DA that normalize alternative currencies with very extremely poor exchange rates so you have kids who are only 14 who's only experiences with business involve selling their craft for pennies in what isn't even real world dollars, which in turn leads to an atmosphere where art itself is really really devalued and people get ideas of professionalism that are very different from actual commission work. It's easy to see where the line of thought can drift from "I commissioned someone with money" to "I commissioned someone with DA points" to "I commissioned someone with game currency/art/ect" until the concept of a commission is completely detached from the idea of working for profit and more thought of in regards to "I am doing this for someone else".
That said, I feel like commission ettiquette in general isn't really talked about enough and a lot of kids have no idea how to navigate things like pricing, communication, professionalism, and just overall how to conduct themselves in a thoughtful and responsible way. I see a lot of bad behavior, poor decisions, or undervaluing specifically because a lot of these younger artists don't really have a lot of guidance in their craft and they've just never been taught better by someone who had their best interest in mind.

    • @SebastianSeanCrow

I hate to say this but not knowing how to be professional can be easily fixed with any customer facing regular job. Idk that’s just my experience. Was serving for 4 years, did a lot of retail, even worked in a call center, so I racked up some customer service skills lol

    Thanks for making this video
A couple days ago I was talking with my parents on how I’m gonna start doing commissions
And how when I get older I wanted to be a freelance artist and my parents mentioned “oh okay but make sure to take care of yourself maybe take swimming classes or exercise from time to time”
And me (a 12 year old child) my mindset was yeah okay sure but it’s not really that important I’m just gonna be drawing and animating
But after watching this video my mindset change and how that yeah I should take care of myself and not overwork myself
So thanks for changing my mindset
When I’m older I’ll make sure to take care of myself and take needed breaks

It always bothers me when people think artists who take commissions should pump them out right then and there; like the moment you hand over the money you should receive a perfectly polished work of art. That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but people that act like that honestly just make my blood boil. Like, artists are human too, back off people.

Oh my. The point about art taking time. I do commissions on Amino quite a bit for DA points or Amino Coins and people are so impatient. There have been times Its been a day and people are already asking for a progress shot or ask “hows it going” once a day. I’ve told people I have a life, but it doesn’t stop them from asking. There have been times that I’ve put these people higher on my comm list so I don’t have to deal with them anymore. I’m a full time High School student and have other priorities then drawing Furry art 24/7.

  • @CreativaArtly

Some people are a pain. My lowest commission prices on DA are 30 point or so and one guy was like can you do my weird creepy Fanart of Batman and mavis Dracula for two points. Grant it I did do a few pieces for him before his requests got super weird and gross and uncomfortable. Two points isn’t what you pay for commissions dang it. You pay what the artist asks. Good grief.

Please don't forget doing fanart is risky. If the creator of those characters does not permit it, then it is copyright theft. It does not matter if one makes bank, just that it can be shown to damage the brand. So it isn't really permitted to do even gift art without the copyright holder's permission to do so. I hate when it is made to sound like laws don't apply when they do. Just because companies tend to let fandom slide for the free publicity, it doesn't mean it isn't risky.

It's not just buyers that misunderstood the concept of commission. You quite often find the artists mistake commissions.
A huge problem is artists thinking that being the creator also means being the owner. There has been a lot of drama in the furry community in the last few years of artists "revoking rights for commissions".
If you commission something, 9 times out of 10, you own it.
Back in late 2017 I commissioned some concept art based off sketches I did, for a game I was building. I spent about $4000 on 5 images on the grounds that they were confidential and couldn't be uploaded or put into a portfolio for 3 years.
One week after payment, they gleefully uploaded work on a new indie game.........
They and my lawyers are currently having heated discussions about what an NDA is.

I’m one of the people who can draw really quickly
    Although it’s only for cats
I can draw a fully shaded scene with multiple cats in 1-3 hours, with some of my longest art projects being like 5-6 hours. But I can only draw cats
Although sometimes I’m busy, or procrastinating, and wait a week before starting on it lol

I have a question. Say I have art commissions and I want to post it online. Would that be okay? Or is a slow down-it won’t be loved all at once approach? Or people may try to copy and steal your work?

3:13 is there a difference between freelance and commissions? A lot of people talk about them differently but you’re talking about it as if commissions and freelance are the same.

    Okay so!
I understand what you mean, but I do think that a commission can be for other thinks than just money. ( Stay with me, I'll explain :-D )
So you can do a commission/freelance work for other things. Like if your friend buys you dinner, someone will help your computer issue, or even for exposure.
I'm not saying whether it's good payment (particularly for the latter), but I think it still is a commission. You do work, you get paid. In some way.
As you say, gift art and requests are not, because you don't expect anything in return.
Those are not a paid service, so they are not a commission.
But don't get me wrong, I don't condone working for exposure (unless you are a big fan or they have a hUGE audience who would be interested in your work). I do however think that it's not judt about money, but about getting paid in one way or another.
The reason getting paid in exposure is bad is because it isn't a good pay most of the times, yet beggars or entitled people think it is all the artist needs.
Still though I think it's a good thing to acknowledge that payment can come in other forms that "MO-NEY"
I wholeheartedly agree there is no such thing as a "free commision" that's just not how it works, but I think Payment and value is up to the individual artist :-)
Btw I love your vids Michie, I hope it doesn't come off as mean, I just thought I'd chime in with a personal view of the definition you sat in the start of the video ^^
