His height helps a lot.
The high arc on the ball gives him a lot of time to recover position and balance for the next shot. He really doesn't move that much most of the time, not unless he's exposed an oblique angle. And even then, he'll attempt an around-the-post sinker from down low that rises up barely enough to catch the exposed corner of the table. Off speed smashes that force him to move in tight don't provide for as much arc, hence less time for Adam to recover position and balance. Then if you can rush the reply lower off the bounce (followed maybe by a second shot to pull him hard to the other side), it really does cause him to make a ballistic lunge he can't recover from if he doesn't ace his defensive counter-attack. What makes this strange to me as a pickleball player is that there's no volley attack to discourage those high lobs.

One of my favorite videos of yours. 1) It's a great match! Nail-biting there at the end, and full of really good points 2) It's really awesome to see someone you met as a 9 year old become an accomplished player and get to play a match 4 years later!

first option: hit the ball right after it hits the table(timing)before its spins
second option: just wait
@@derchinese7380 idk how common this is for ping pong players, but us tennis players can easily read the spin based off how he first hits the ball. For the most part, the way he moves the racket initially is the way the ball will spin. However, what makes the snake so devastating is that Adam will move the racket quickly in the other direction after he made contact, which really confuses the opponent that doesn't have time to carefully think about what happened.
First Last it’s easier to see on camera but irl his contact point is obstructed by the table.

Adam's defensive skills are crazy insane. His forehand shots are also a treat to watch. Doesn't hit most of them flat, always applies top spin to them. Amazing play!
After watching so many of Adam's games, there're only two ways I've observed that can maximize the chance of beating the "snake" (in fact, his style of long-distance defense). The most effective one, which I've seen a few top-world-ranking players did to him, is hitting the ball right after the ball hits the table. There're two great advantages: first, the ball nearly doesn't have time to fly in an expected direction (the snake); second, Adam is too far to save the ball. This is the key: to beat a professional long-distance defender like him, you need to make him run; you need to shorten the distance to make him get out of his comfort zone.
The 2nd way depends on the setting of the place. If it has a high ceiling but not very long, then I saw one top player hit the ball so high, it flies over the limit and Adam couldn't possibly reach.
It doesn't matter how good you are, if you play along with his style, you're basically giving him the chance of practice and advantage to beat you. Unfortunately, I've seen many just keep doing it.
Agreed. Hitting Adam's lob right off the bounce also gives you the element of surprise via angle of attack. But better watch out for the 🐍!

That wasn't just a battle, that was war! Epic play from both sides. Adam with the old drop the bat trick eh? LOL. I did notice though, on a few occasions when Adam went on the offensive, Sally had some difficulties countering.
Wonderful match, Adam! I got to tell you one of my favorite memories. I played Sally and Darryl Tsao in back-to-back ICC Advanced League matches a few years back where both matches went the full five game distance with deuces somewhat like this match (though the points were not quite as awesome as these). I know I split the two , but unfortunately I do forget which precocious kid I beat. Perhaps Sally or her mom (or dad) knows. I am sure they will recall the match. I know Sally was younger than this 13 year old version, but hopefully was older than the 9 year old version (I really hope so, anyway)... 🏓👍😎🤞😢😇

I love Adams play style he gets aggressive and annoying in the beginning then when his opponent makes a mistake he goes on the defense doing whatever it's called that makes it so the ball goes really high when it bounces and messes his opponent up. It's so dumb and stupid, yet crazily effective.
