Hello, neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer, and today we're taking a look at installing the Curt Class I Trailer Hitch Receiver on a 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback. Now, this is what your hitch is gonna look like when it's installed, and it's a hidden cross tube. So the only thing that you're gonna see is the actual receiver end here and your safety chain loops. And if you're wondering if it works with your sport model and that rear diffuser, as you can see, it does. Now, being an inch and a quarter receiver tube opening means that it's not gonna have as wide a selection of accessories as you're two-inch by two-inch, but on a smaller vehicle, sometimes you're limited with just the inch and a quarter option. So there's still definitely some bike racks, ball mounts, as well as cargo carriers that you can load up here.
So you can definitely utilize this hitch quite often. Now, when using your accessories, you're gonna keep it in place with a half-inch pin and clip, which is not included with the hitch. A lot of your accessories will come with one, but if you wanna pick up a locking one, that way you can leave your accessories on the vehicle, lock it in place and know that it's not gonna walk away in the hands of someone else, we have plenty of options available here at etrailer. Now, your safety chain loops are nice and open. So if you do plan on pulling a small trailer, your normal S-style will definitely be able to go in there easily, as well as even a larger clevis style to be able to hook up.
Now, speaking of towing, you're gonna want to adhere to the weight capacities of, not only the hitch, but also the vehicle. And being a Class 1, that means your gross trailer weight rating is gonna be 2,000 pounds. And that's gonna be the weight of the trailer plus the accessories loaded up. You also have a tongue weight rating of 200 pounds, which is gonna be the downward pressure that's put on the receiver tube opening. So when you have those suspended accessories, like a bike rack or a cargo carrier, you don't want to go over that weight limit.
And if you do plan on towing with this vehicle, check the vehicle's owner's manual and see what it's capable of towing and then compare that with the weight rating on the hitch. Take the lower of those two numbers so you stay safe. Now when choosing accessories, sometimes you have folding ones, and you wanna make sure it doesn't make contact with the rear fascia. And also, if you're picking up a ball mount, you wanna make sure that extends out far enough, that way the trailer doesn't make contact with your rear fascia. So from the center of the hitch pin hole to the furthest point of the rear fascia, we're looking right at about two inches.
And as far as ground clearance goes, we are looking at about 11 inches from the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground. And that's important, not only for when choosing accessories to make sure you have that ground clearance, but also if you need to pick up a ball mount, you can determine whether or not you need a rise or a drop to mount up to your trailer. Something to keep in mind when choosing accessories as well is, especially your suspended ones, like your bike racks and cargo carriers as this kind of extends out from the vehicle, as you go up and incline, that is gonna want to tilt towards the ground. So something to keep in mind or something to kind of also think about when choosing accessories. If you can get one that raises up a little bit, that'll give you a little bit more ample ground clearance. Now, the installation, they rate it at a 10 out of a 10, and I don't necessarily agree with that. This one isn't that bad. Now, you will be taking off your rear fascia, but as far as taking fascia off vehicles, this is a pretty simple one to do. You are gonna be trimming, not only a little bit here for the clearance of the hitch, but also a little bit of the bumper support that actually sits on top of where the hitch mounts up. So it seems like a lot, but I'm gonna walk you through the installation step by step, and you should be able to knock this out, I would say within an hour or two. You could definitely do it in your driveway or your garage. So let's go ahead, take a look, and get your hitch installed. For the installation of the hitch, the rear fascia is gonna have to come off because it's going to bolt where our factory bumper beam is, which is gonna be located behind the rear fascia. So our first step to get the fascia off is going to be going to where our taillights are. There's gonna be a plastic cover, and we're gonna pry that off. I'm using it a plastic trim

For those who are interested in getting a wiring harness... The Curt 56508 is the correct one. Plug & play, no splicing required.

I installed the 11591 on my 2024 Civic Hatchback and it came out good. It took me longer but I worked slow and took a break before putting the fascia back on so I wasn't tired and rushing it. A few things to note. Removing the lower screws in the wheel well on both sides(inside not underneath) was a pain as the screws would spin easily but did not remove from the inner speed nut and speed nut wasn't spinning either. Wedging a flat head on the inside seemed to do the trick. Interested to know what others would do? Bugged me that a simple screw caused a 20 minute delay though. Since I was doing this myself I found trying to put the hitch and bumper back on was difficult so I used a screw and nut lightly secure to keep the opposite I was putting on first together and it was a breeze until trying to get the upper inside drivers side bolt in. Didn't seem to line up and bolt was going in crooked. I drilled the bumper hole more to give it more room and it went in but it was tough. All the others went in nice and straight. Haven't seen any videos on a 2024 install so maybe a hole change occurred, don't know. Maybe I crossed the thread on the first attempts to install with the hitch and bumper loose. Anyway, its on. 3-3/4 hrs with 20 minute break.

Can somebody inform me of the dimensions of the square / rectangle that needs to be cut out of the lower fascia? I also bought the Curt hitch, but it only came with a packing slip. No written directions. Thanks for your help.

What about the 2021 civic sport sedan? The exhaust is right in the middle. Any ideas for that one? I didn’t consider needing a trailer hitch until a few years after I bought it.

Unfortunately, none of the hitches we offer for the 2022 Civic are compatible with vehicles equipped with a center exhaust. Wish we had better news for you!

Thanks Brad! awesome video! I have a 2023 Honda Civic Hatchback, I feel this hitch will fit (Curt 11591 = CU92UR) ??? Can you recommend the wiring hardness for, if they have the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness for trailer connector? don't want to do any cutting. Thank you so much for the video.

None of our vendors have determined if the hitch fits for the 2022 Honda Civic hatchback carry over to the 2023 model as of yet. It doesn't look line there are much in the way of changes between the 2022 and 2023 models, and the hitch should fit, but we can't guarantee fit until the manufacturers have completed test fits, or we have verified it for ourselves. The same holds true for the trailer wiring harness. We're glad you enjoyed the video!

We really can't say. The hitch is designed to fit around a stock exhaust. If your aftermarket exhaust occupies the same footprint as the stock system, you'll be good to go. If not, we couldn't guarantee the fit. Whomever installed it might be able to shed some light on that for you...

Using a small trailer? Sure, as long as the weight of the trailer and bike doesn't exceed the capacity of the vehicle or the 2000 lbs towing/200 lb tongue weight capacity of the hitch. Using a hitch mounted motorcycle carrier? Likely not unless the weight of the bike combined with the carrier you're planning on using weighs less than the 200 lb tongue weight capacity of the hitch. Hope that helps!
