To be fair, Batarians are involved in a few of Shepard's backstories. In the Colonist backstory, everyone in their colony is killed (like their family) or enslaved by Batarian slavers, and Shepard manages to get away thanks to the Alliance. In the Ruthless backstory, Shepard is leading a huge mission in ridding the whole Skyllian Verge of Batarian pirates and slavers, with most of their squad dying in the process. Among all the races, Shepard probably doesn't like the Batarians much, probably why they didn't really hesitate in the Arrival DLC in ME2.
The War Hero backstory also has to do with Baterians I believe, I was fairly certain the Skyllian Blitz was an alliance military action against the Baterians.

Even one meaningful Batarian squadmate would have made the devastation of Khar'shan and the Hegemony far more tragic. Even 10 years ago, every time I saw a Cannibal in combat, I was reminded of how the Batarians got thunderfucked far worse than any other species, proportionally-speaking. Shit, have a Batarian take Jacob's place. He was the worst-written character in ME2 by *far*. A Batarian squadmate in the early game would also be a way that Cerberus plays Shepard, in showing "Look, we have a Batarian, the most human-hating species, working for us; we're not so bad!". God, what a missed writing opportunity. On top of all that, a Batarian squadmate going into ME3 is just itching for Javik to make a comment about how he's relieved that at least one of the primitive species has four eyes, as is only proper. Javik and this Batarian squadmate could even have a bit of banter about how they can both see better than anyone else.
I always envisioned some sort of Batarian ex-slaver that joins the suicide mission to compensate for the damage he has done in the terminus systems. As for his role on the ship? Gunsmith. Someone must modify the weapons to puncture Collector shields and someone with experience on illegal gun modification like a pirate would have that.
Colonist + Ruthless is the best (xenophobe) Renegade Shepard (imo). It also a great renegade turn into Paragorn between the games, by overcoming his xenophobia as part of chracter growth. Earthling + Survivor is also a grreat renegade who only cares for himself and either stay this way and betray his Squadmates or turn around releaning the value of comradiry.

i feel that you should have been able to start ME1 with a flashback where you are in the scenario based on which of the three backgrounds you chose. If you chose ruthless, you get to play the siege of torfan and make the outcome less or more brutal for the batarians (like an asteroid strike on the planet or a nuke) if you chose war hero, you should be thrown straight into the siege of elysium and defend it (and maybe followed with the siege of torfan, which you can choose to lead or let someone else lead it) if you chose sole survivor, you fight a losing war in mindoir (maybe not as shepard but someone else) more batarians slayed...

i feel that you should have been able to start ME1 with a flashback where you are in the scenario based on which of the three backgrounds you chose.
If you chose ruthless, you get to play the siege of torfan and make the outcome less or more brutal for the batarians (like an asteroid strike on the planet or a nuke)
if you chose war hero, you should be thrown straight into the siege of elysium and defend it (and maybe followed with the siege of torfan, which you can choose to lead or let someone else lead it)
if you chose sole survivor, you fight a losing war in mindoir (maybe not as shepard but someone else)
more batarians slayed...
The fun thing is that this is the paragon dialogue option .

the worst part is he is kinda right I cant think of a non criminals batarian except for mabey the one preacher in 2 that was calling for the death of all humans like even the vorcha have more depth than them because at least they understand pain less because of there biology and culture around that and I think you do meat a few that are yes rude but y'know dont wish for the genocide for the human race I mean there lore is that they were greedy trew a tantrum left the citadel started attacking the humans and are upset that they lost they are like a bunch of toddlers like I genuinely think that varren (the space dogs) have more character depth than them.
p.s also they are surprisingly viewed worse than even the krogan like when you are relived to only be having a giant friking spike launched into you a mach 7 rather than be taken as a slave that's when you know you suck when being shot by the Kishock Harpoon Gun is best case scenario there entire society is based on slavery. Many would rather die killing humans (meteor mission in me one) or doom the entire universe to kill a handful of humans (in three the medigel saboteur) also they believe that if you have less than 4 eyes they think you are stupid. in short they are like space nazis mixed with human(well alien) tracking/slavery and a smidge of raping and pillaging on top along with the maturity of a three year old and the intellect of a rock if the rock was particularly stupid. EDIT: also that one mission with the suicidal girl that escaped from the batarian captures
