Thanks! I'm new to affinity and this is a much clearer and simpler guide than anything I could find on youtube. Just a note on managing the document profile- if you're printing on a good inkjet (like the surecolour series), many papers will be able to reproduce a wider colour gamut than sRGB, and if you convert a wider space to sRGB you might be clipping off some otherwise usable colours. *This only applies* if the source file is already in a wider colour space than sRGB to begin with though- eg. a file in adobeRGB, Prophoto RGB or a RAW file from a camera. If you're working in 8 bit (most people are), I'd recommend working in something like adobeRGB for the better range of printable colours, and only converting to other profiles for web/display/offset print etc. Sorry if this comment comes off as patronising, I just know how confusing this stuff is, and I like to know that people are getting the best out of their digital images in print :)
Not patronising AT ALL! I'm always looking to learn more stuff! Just looking at my scans of my work, it says they are sRGB so I think it's probably ok (and they are printing up fine in this format). It might be that with digital art it would work better with adobeRGB. I might test it out though to see if it looks even better with that! Glad the video could help! I had been searching for a video like this for well over a year. Every time I tried to get AP working to print it was a frustration and I would just leave it again for months at a time. I then set aside a day recently on the affinity forums and someone FINALLY managed to help me figure out what I was doing wrong. SO RELIEVED! So I thought, right, I need to make that into a video!
You can also get a representation of what the print will look like and see if all the colours are available with your chosen paper if you soft proof first. Go to adjustments and add a soft proof layer, place the soft proof at the top of the layer stack and select your chosen paper ICC profile, you will notice the screen change to give a representation of the final print. Here is where you can tweak your image if necessary but always keep the soft proof at the top. To check the colours tick the gamut check box any grey areas show the colours or shades that won't be printed correctly so will need to be adjusted, a curves layer will usually sort this out. Make sure to untick the soft proof layer before printing though... Thank you for you video. 👍
The soft proofing method was the only type of video I could find before I went through the affinity forums for a while to try to find out this way of doing it. I didn't find the soft proofing worked at all for me and didn't project the way something looked when printed at all. I found it overly complicated too. This method above is the one that has given me the most accurate prints (and I'm not trying to make them 100% identical to the original painting, just as close as possible and they're usually 99% accurate doing it this way) so I am happy with it. This is what made me make this video, because all the other ones were just not helping! Thank you though Andy, I don't mean to be dismissive, just that I'd tried it before and it didn't work for me.
Thank you so much for this Emily!! Been using affinity photo for awhile, watch a lot of videos on soft proofing, but still can't manage to get the results of what the ICC profiles are supposed to do like it used to on my adobe software. Thank you for clearing up the part of avoiding assigning it under "Document>assign ICC", tremendous help for my case. Thanks again for sharing👍
You're very welcome! I made this precisely because I was you a couple of years ago! I couldn't find any info ANYWHERE!! Took a few goes on the affinity forums till someone helped me with this! It's lovely to be free of adobe I have to say!
Hi, Thanks for a great tutorial. Unfortunately on my latest version on my Mac running the latest operating system the layout is different and I couldn't select ICC paper types. Basically the interface looked very different, with no option for printer to manage colours. Also I was getting horrible banding. Any tips would be appreciated.
Yeah it's a bit of a mystery with the new set up (I have the new affinity program now so this video won't be relevant anymore). I haven't been able to recreate these choices in the new update. :/
@@ArtByEmilyHare Thanks for getting back to me. It since Adobe changed something last year, Printing BnW has been a nightmare with a weird pink hue, hence why I thought I'd try Affinity, but on standard settings while the BnW is OK there is banding on my tested and perfect Canon iP8750, utterly cheesed off.
@@marcusoutdoors4999 shit, that's really annoying :( - have you tried contacting affinity directly about it? I found it was the driver I was using that had somehow changed (not sure how, just after i moved house). It's working ok for me but that doesn't help you!
Hi Emily your a star ⭐️⭐️⭐️affinity printing was terrible and I had to use Epsom Photo to print the pictures which worked great. Then I came across your video and I can now print straight from AP thanks to you. However not happy with Serif as they should do a Print tutorial considering how complicated they want printing to be
Thanks Terry! Yeah the only videos I could find on here about printing with affinity was VERY over complicated!! Not what I wanted at all when leaving photoshop (which was v simple to print from with icc profiles). Anyway, it took a long time in the affinity forums to find out that this is all I had to do - so this is why I made the video as I was sure I wasn't the only one having this issue! Really glad you've been able to find use in this!
Hi Emily - did you upgrade to Affinity Photo 2 by any chance? I’m having the same issues you had but inV2 the menus & options etc have changed and I can’t seem to assign iCC paper profiles correctly - my printing seems to have a blue haze to everything. I have the Epson SC 600 which, it appears at least, has opted for independence when it comes to printing! Any advice much appreciated. Ron B
I am using the Epson P600 but I do not have a 'Colour matching' option in the 'Range and scale' section. This is my first time trying to print from Affinity photo (like you, I'm trying to get away from Photoshop)
Hmm, I'm not sure why you don't have that, possibly you need to directly ask Affinity? Or maybe it's in another section on your AP program but I don't see why it would be different unless there's been an update?
@jeffrey bankers oh damn that is very frustrating. Have you tried the Affinity forums? That is how I got to the bottom of this (although it took a LONG time).
@jeffrey bankers I don't know much about papers but I think it'd be worth trying out one of the other ICC options for a different matte paper (small tests!) to see how it looks? Or find a paper which you can download the ICC from - I use Innova paper which is really great quality and I've found it to print super accurately to my paintings.
Greetings. Would you know how to assign a specific profile that a print shop is requesting when it doesn't exist in Affinity? They're asking I convert my RGB files to CMYK GRACOL2006. I can convert to Generic CMYK, but have no clue as to where I would find GRACOL2006. Any ideas??? TIA
I think you have to upload it. The ICC profiles I use are ones I uploaded to Affinity but it's so long since I did it i can't remember how! I found this: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/71063-where-and-how-to-download-icc-to-affinity-photo/
If the printshop is recommending that icc profile, I would ask them to send you a copy of it, and then upload it to Affinity Photo as per Emily's comment.
I downloaded the icc profiles for the paper I use and the uploaded it to the program. There are already a lot of icc programs on there as standard such as epson ones so your paper might be in there already :)
I think by default that is the setting for all software IEC61966-2-1. SRGB used and recognised worldwide. Only change from that if you know what you are doing.
Thank you, you saved my bacon. Wish now i had discovered this a week ago. Serif are extremelly bad at instructions especially on printing, i've told them so. Maybe in future publications they will give 'image output' more consideration. Thanks again.
Tell me about it! I made this because of wishing there was a video like this. I have had AP for SO LONG but continued to use PS because of this one issue! Which is ridiculous. It was only because I tried again on the forums to get to the bottom of it last week that someone finally helped me out. But I honestly don't understand why this isn't in any of their info. All the videos I found about printing were SO complicated and bizarre! I'm really glad that I could make this for others like you and me who were fed up! Now that this video is out there hopefully folks will find it :)
