Every few weeks of days full of coronavirus drudgery, I need to replay this video. It lifts my spirits for two reasons. Reason #1 is Doug's humor. Reason #2 is that this listing of ghar-bhage reminds me that, no matter how bad my situation, it could be a whole lot worse - I could own one of these pens.
For Kaco Edge, you actually press on the top of the clip to lift the bottom. Also, I heard some rumours they had fixed the material in newer batches and now it won't crack so easily.
This is the most fun I’ve had watching a pen review. You got a new subscriber! This is the first video I watched from you, now I’m on my way to watching every thing else.
What an outrageous set of events! I may have been luckier than you, but maybe not. I bought a Wing Sung 698 that looks just like yours. I filled it and wrote with it one time and liked it. then I emptied it and cleaned it and put it in my pen case. I haven't used it since so I really didn't test it enough to judge. I just went by all the positive reviews I saw on youtube. I also bought 4 Wing Sung 3008s (from Amazon) and they work nice. On the bright side, you got a very entertaining video out of it. Expensive though.
I haven't had the cap crack or any marring, but the resin is soo slippery, it's near impossible to use. As they say, you pay your money and you take your chances. At least it wasn't much money...
After seeing so many complaints about the Kaco Edge cap cracking, I decided to never use mine and keep it as a curiosity in my fountain pen collection (MIB).
Hi, Doug! Great video. I believe your Wing Sung 3008 is a fake. I bought one some time ago and worked fine, except for the rusty screw on the cap. It still does. Some time later, I bought another one and looked different, cheaper, the nib wasn’t branded with the wing sung logo aaand... it had a locking mechanism on the piston, which the original hadn’t. Apparently, someone is making cheap copies and sometimes they even use real caps and fake bodies, from what I’ve heard. It’s not like the original 3008 is wonderful, but I consider mine to be a nice workhorse for the price. Nicer than the fake ones. Have a nice day! :)
I've been into fountain pens since I was about 13 when my grandfather sent my mother a Delta fountain pen for her birthday. I've bought and given away a number of pens over the years, mostly cheaper pens made of steel and with extra fine nibs because they had trouble keeping up with my writing and would scratch or skip contestantly. Even so, the those weren't the worst pens I've ever owned. They actually had a nice weight and size to them so they could be used even if they couldn't be used well. No, the worst Fountain pen I've ever owned is the Parker Jotter. I love the Parker brand. Whenever I found one dropped in high school, I knew they were a great quality pen and was ecstatic with my find. The Parker Jotter though is tiny, almost weightless, and uses a proprietary ink cartridge or you have to pay $12 extra for the converter. So, let's add those up really quick. I can't write with the pen because it is so short since it is probably 5 inches overall with the cap removed and placed on the back. It is light so you have trouble maintaining a proper pressure if you are used to heftier pens, and can't use the basically Universal fountain pen ink cartridges or a standard fountain pen converter cartridge. Instead, you have to pay nearly a dollar a cartridge or 12 dollars for a converter that should come standard with the pen. It is the first fountain pen I've owned that I've legitimately felt ripped off by when I purchased it, and I've bought dollar fountain pens off Wish just for shits and giggles!
Surprised to see Wing Sung 698 here. This pen was pretty revolutionary when it came out 2 or 3 years as the first well-known Chinese piston filler, and it got mostly very positive reviews. I've never had any problems with mine. I didn't use it very often though and now I don't use it at all - just don't like the clunky design. Well, I guess collecting fountain pens is like a box of chocolates...
Exactly! I bought two of these just to make sure I didn't get a dud. I replaced feeds, nib, polished, aligned, swapped, changed inks. It was more than it was worth, especially when you consider I spent over $40 on these two pens (including all the extra feeds and nibs).
A few of those I almost bit on. I have the 3008, and it still works, but it's telling that my youngest son, who has adopted a few of my pens, thought it felt too cheap.
Personally I've found with the Kaco, that if you can get past the Lamy 2000 comparison, which was always crazy, and just take it on it's own merits, it's a serviceable fountain pen. It has a nice Schmidt nib, writes well, and I've found it to be reliable enough. I suspect it's one of those inexpensive pens that has variable quality control, making it a bit of a lottery.
I was thoroughly unimpressed by my Kaco Edge. It was okay in the hand but the clip is useless, the nib was uninspiring and the cap cracked without even being used for much more than a review.
I think the problem with the Edge goes deeper than just some QC. I bought several including the newer colours when they came out, to see if I just had a dud, but every one of them is naff. Mine write dry & have terrible starvation problems, the nibs feel unpleasant, the supposedly upmarket Schmidt converter is an entry level K1, and the Internet is alight with experiences of caps cracking just as Doug saw. Mine are now in long term storage where I expect them to remain.
I wish I had seen this video earlier. I bought a Wing Sung 3009 with a hooded nib. The pen arrived and the stem for the feed was broken. I tried getting a replacement and was told by the seller to buy another pen! No offer of a replacement or a refund! I have since avoided all Wing Sung 3000 series of pens. Great prices but my feeling is that this series of pens with the Wing Sung name are garbage. So is the seller. I actually saw the fake Jinhao 100 in a store, a discount clothing store, of all places. It came in a blister pack and was selling (are you ready for this?) for $45.99!! I never saw a Jinhao in a store. But the price was ridiculous. I had the Wing Sung 698. I no longer have it. Enough said. Overall I am glad that many of the recent pens have significantly increased in quality, especially Jinhao and Hong Dian. It is time to go shopping. I am planning to get the Platinum President. I think you have one. Is it worth getting?
It is a really cool logo and under some acrylic on the finial which is nice. It is also on the two-toned nib. Actually a cool pen, I just can't write with it as it is too small, and that was disappointing.
I like the newer New Moon. Decent section, great-looking acrylic, and it posts exceptionally well. Quite different from the metal pocket pen--seems odd they gave them the same name.
Thanks for that, Karl. I was wondering about the new one. I've seen Aaron's video on his, but it still looked short unposted and didn't look that secure.
It's a bit on the short size unposted, mine posts about as solidly as my 308 or 480 though not quite as securely as my 309s, which I think are the champs at that.
@@InkquiringMinds I love the 309. My experience is that the piston can stick a little bit at first out of the box or if it's been sitting empty a long time, but once you get it moving it works great--and I haven't even bothered to grease my pistons so far. (I wouldn't get one with a totally opaque barrel though, e.g. Galaxy, same as with the 355.) It's a super-easy piston-filler to clean or maintain because the section screws into the barrel, unlike an Eco, which is also handy for syringe filling if your ink bottle is almost empty.
Hello fellow Calgarian! I, too, loathe a slippery section. Sadly, my hands become every so slightly slippery of themselves as I write for extended periods, the additional slippage of a metal section or one lacking some contour leaves my fingers run towards the nib. I have yet to acquire a seriously disappointing pen, though a pen I acquired from Ranga pens a while back was some what lackluster in looks, the ebonite used for the main barrel of the pen seemingly from entirely different stock than that used for the cap. Considering I paid $130 for it from Peyton Street I was quite let down, too bad to given the photos of the pen I thought I would be receiving led me to believe I was getting a pen reminiscent if those five pin bowling balls. Thanks for the humorous reviews, Douglas, your videos are always entertaining.

haha great video doug the only bit i disagree with is the kaco edge mine has a fine nib and has seen alot of use without cracking (as yet) the clip is pointless though
Most of those are definitely junk, but I have two WingSung 698s and both had great nibs out of the box - one of my favourite EDC pens. The piston knob is a bit fiddly but it works fine and it's not a big deal to me. The newer Delike New Moon is also a very nice pen with a resin section, gorgeous material, and a good nib, though not EF enough for my taste. (There have been quite a lot of different things called "Delike New Moon.") I don't know if that Baoer is a fake or not, but like a number of Chinese pens it comes in both hooded and non-hooded versions - looks like they just sent you the wrong one. Should cost under $3 US though.
Indeed, Meh! I guess my point was that these were disappointing pen experiences for me personally. The 698 was a frustration as everyone else seemed to love them and I bought two and both of them took a lot of work to get them to write in any way decently. They were not tossed in the bin at all. I gave the better one to a friend and he likes it. The other makes a line but it isn't something I enjoy. The Delike is a beautiful, nicely weighted pen. I just can't write with it as it is too short and won't post. So it will be destined for another hand eventually.

Thanks, J. But, nope. It is a crack, all the way around. The good news is, only one of the four cracked. Three of the four had rusty screws. And one of the four is fine (never inked up). So the trick is, never use it and it will be fine. Like my Grandmother's couch. LOL

LOL Well I've only owned two Hero fountain pens; one (9315) is on my desk and ready to be filmed for a new review and the other (565) is on that slow boat from China.
I think it is hysterical that the Jinhaos and the Baorers are being copied! That is just 😂! It’s not funny that they are 💩, but that imposters have imposters. I have never seen the Sikb pens, that’s too bad that they were such a bad pen, they look pretty nice at first. I loved the panty influencer!!! ROTFLMAO!!!
Not all Chinese pens are junk. A couple in this collection are, yes, but many of those pen I mention here are perfectly fine fountain pens - just not for me. The Delike New Moon 3 for example is a fine pen, but it simply won't fit my hand so I can write with it. My Chinese Penbbs 480 Galaxy is the best pen in my collection and that includes a $300 Visconti.
I was thinking Pilot, Platinum, Opus 88, Lamy, Kaweco, Pelikan, etc. The usual suspects. I guess there are some decent Chinese brands, but I avoid them all. That’s just me.

Jorge Gabriel Pasos Iñiguez Saludos from the f f f frozen north!
I watched this again and was funnier the second time. Kudos. I am not fond of pregnant pens like Sikib for the record.
LOL Pregnant Pens!
In this spaghetti western of Jinhao & Baoer the Hero is missing.
LOL Well I've only owned two Hero fountain pens; one (9315) is on my desk and ready to be filmed for a new review and the other (565) is on that slow boat from China.
Oh well, we all get it wrong sometimes!
The highs aren't as high when there are no lows.
ROTFLMAO!!!
I'm glad you catch little things like that. I'll keep putting them in for you! :)
Worst pens 2020/2021?
Here ya go! ua-cam.com/video/__UvWb6z03s/v-deo.html
What a revelation, cheap Chinese made fountain pens are junk.
One wonders why you keep falling for these crappy pens. Buy reputable brands.
You mean like Cross, Parker and Sheaffer?
I was thinking Pilot, Platinum, Opus 88, Lamy, Kaweco, Pelikan, etc. The usual suspects. I guess there are some decent Chinese brands, but I avoid them all. That’s just me.
a fake of a fake ! OMG
I know right? I just reviewed another fake of a fake with the Moonman/Jinhao Acrylic. I didn't even ink it, it is so bad.
