Bellshill had 32 pubs back in the day for Mossend Cross to Bellshill Cross it makes me sad how many farms have closed and how the teachers belted me with a thick leather belt at the age 5yr
Amazing video. I moved to Bellshill in 2009, and did some Family Tree research a year or two ago... much to my surprise I find out my Great Grandparents lived in this area. I've got a marriage certificate saying that one of them lived in Main Street, Mossend, and the other was just listed as "Blackmoss, Bellshill" - I'm guessing this is a farm name? Do any of your old maps show a Blackmoss in the surrounding area? I'd love to find out some more about these relatives, and how I ended up living back in their old town. :)
I found this reference about BLACK MOSS "About 1810, this new settlement took on the name Bellshill and continued to grow absorbing nearby villages such as Black Moss, Sykehead and Nesnas." I have looked on old maps but just can't find it. I'm wondering if the street called Blackmoss Drive is named after Blackmoss village.........
OMG I grew up here and am having such a crazy flashback. I left scotland when I was 14 and have lived NY most of my life. I am trying to find pictures of my parents' pub that was called the Brandon Bar or the Brandon arms. Late 60's through 79. Wow
@@waynekerrgoodstyle I've realised on the opening map at 7 seconds in you can see "Blackmoss Cottage" in the video. I've no idea why I've only spotted this now. I've looked at the area in the modern day and there's no remaining sign of anything Blackmoss right there, though as others have said, there's a Blackmoss Drive in a more recent development south of those cottages.
Hello again, will have a look see if I have any pics, our house was across from the Academy with a wee swing park and wash house at the bottom of the street where we lived 31, we had the old employment building basically at the back door, if we had one lol and a big shale Bing parallel to the houses, as for the farm and slaughter house it was at the top of the street, we had many a beast running down the terrace trying to avoid the inevitable . My younger sister went to the old Noble school, before the new one was built. I remember having to walk past the slaughter house on my way to the Academy. I love living in Bellshill. Happy memories.
