    You did a good job on the pens! I have recently started turning pens also, mostly because all I have is a (cheap Chinese) mini lathe and it just isn’t up to some of the things I was trying to do on it. The biggest secret to turning on the small lathes is to slow your roll and take light cuts. You’ll find your zen space soon enough :) God bless!

    If pens drive you crazy, start looking around at all the non-large-bowl options. Boxes, vases, figures, wands, tops, clocks, etc. There are SO many more options on a small lathe than just pens!!!

    • @KimTippin

    I am just catching up with your videos and this one disturbed me a little. You may not do pens all the time but, saying you do a bad job is like saying you are ugly. Neither statement could be further from the truth! Never demean your talents even if you don’t do something as often as another item. Those pens turned out very nice. You might not like pens as much as turning other things but, you a fine job on them. How does that lathe perform? I bought one 2 years ago them found pit I had to move and it’s still in the box. I did buy the Barracuda 4 for
    It after Christmas. Keep turning and NO MORE NEGATIVE COMMENTS ON YOUR ABILITIES! ❤️

    Welcome back. My Woodturning shop is 8x10 so you’ll make it work. I have a question. I’ve seen in your earlier videos that you occasionally use something besides total boat hardener when mixing up the resin pour but I can’t find the exact video. Do you use acetone or DNA? Thx

    • @KimTippin
      @KimTippin  3 роки тому

      Thank you so much 🤗
      To thin the resin I will mix the resin according to the directions, then add half the total amount of resin or acetone to the mixed resin. This helps the resin to soak in the the wood and slows down the cure time.
      I hope that was what you were asking about 😉🤗😁

    Lots of UA-cam makers use the Jet 1221vs as a regular lathe. (Not interim) they seem to do well with them. You might want to look into one and add it to the new shop when its done. Pens look great. I've never turned one but you made it look easy.

      The lathe doesn't define your talent. But it can reduce frustration and allow you to be more creative. Cool on the wood. I will pm you so I can get a new address to send more. I just picked up a huge cherry tree. Very nice stuff.

    If you think your pins messed up I want to send you some blanks so you can turn some for me but they look absolutely amazing got like a honeycomb like pattern which I love. I've been looking for a good price of total boat resin on Amazon that's the only place that I actually buy my resin molds and I'm looking for a really good deal to save some money the reload fees for my Walmart money cards is driving me nuts

    Those pens look good! As far as using your roughing gouge, important thing is that you are comfortable with it - I do most of my pen turning with my 1/2" bowl gouge and its got to be the right one (I have 2, both sharpened the same but only like the 1)!

    Kim, the first video I seen about wood turning was yours. You inspired me to getting back into wood working. I bought the harbor freight mini lathe. I have made many projects with it. My last was a segmented bowl out of walnut. Never underestimate the power of a little lathe. Thanks for getting me into this hobby. God bless and keep up the good spirits.

  • @andypoe1566

    Great to see you found a little space to work in. There's a lot of small projects for that mini lathe! I was recently approached by the grandparents of a Harry Potter fan, and made a magic wand lol. Oh yeah... a cloth curtain held on with magnets or velcro might work around your lathe stand.
