«Kampen om Tungvannet / The Heavy Water War» is the history of what has been celebrated as *THE* most successful sabotage mission (Operation Gunnerside) in all of WWII. Well worth the view!
The English fail with their gliders. But then they realised: send in the Norwegians. It is an incredible story/storys. One of the soldiers, did not practise skiing because he was told they would not survive. Spoiler: he did. But he should have practised skiing
There is also a little older series called “Lilyhammer”, it got some American actors and is very funny. It’s about a mobster that’s going into witness protection program and moves to Norway. It’s pretty hilarious and has subtitles 😊
It's basically an unofficial spin-off from The Sopranos. It is a comedy featuring Steven Van Zandt who plays a gangster who has to move from the US to the small Norwegian town of Lillehammer (which hosted the '94 olympics. Americans usually pronounce it 'Lilyhammer', hence the name of the show) as part of a witness protection program.
I want to give a more in depth explanation of what Skam is about since the explanation in the video was kind of brief. It basically follows the lives of a group of teenagers. There are four seasons of the show and each season focuses on a different person in the group. The show basically shows the typical lives of Norwegian high schoolers with all the love, drama, fights, parties etc. that teens go through. It’s quite fun to watch and very well produced in my opinion. The shows main demographic is definitely teenagers, but it can be just as entertaining for adults as well. I think the show demonstrates well how the Norwegian high school experience and russefeiring can look like.
You should see the Norwegian show Vikingane, its humoristic satire set in the Viking age. The neat thing about this show is the fact they made an English version. Not by dubbing, but by simultaneously shooting it in both English and Norwegian, scene for scene. The English version is called Norsemen, and at least used to be on Netflix.
"Kampen om tungtvannet" is a true story. Norwegian commando soldiers blew up a factory in Norway producing heavy water. The Englishmen were afraid Germany was making nuclear weapon. "Skam" was made in an American version but failed. It was not possible to transfer the plot into an American context. "Norsemen" (no. Vikingane) is worth a mention. It is made an English version. It is to be seen on NetFlix. Won fans all over the world. Not in large numbers tho.
Tbh, watching "Side om Side" could be a good way to learn about an everyday Norwegian neighborhood and culture in general. Where the conflicts are a bit silly but sometimes relatable. Awkward situations with ur neighbor or how that mother in law is kinda annoying but also sweet at the same time. Another popular series is "Neste Sommer" (next summer). Showing how a handfull of norwegian families during summer vacation are spending their time. Here the typical norwegian "awkward" humor takes place too. Some episodes makes me experience the worst second-hand embarrassment (while still wanting to see how it will end) and others makes me laugh at the hilariously messy situation the protagonist has gotten himself into. The most common being "I told a little lie that I thought was relevant to the situation and now it's escalating into something terrible"
Hei Tyler, I have meant to write this comment for a long time, and with the topic for this video I feel it's time. You have expressed interest and excitement for Norwegian history and royalty, so I have some films that I am pretty sure you would like (if you can read subs ;) ). 1. From 2016 - Title: In Norwegian: Konges Nei - English: The Kings Choice. - Awards: 15 wins and 9 nominations. April 1940. Norway has been invaded by Germany and the royal family and government have fled into the interior. The German envoy to Norway tries to negotiate a peace. Ultimately, the decision on Norway's future will rest with the King. 2. From 2008 - Title: In Norwegian: MAX Manus - English: MAX Manus: Man of war. - Awards: 12 wins and 8 nominations The true story about one of the most brilliant saboteurs during World War II and his battle to overcome his inner demons. 3. From 2017 - Title: In Norwegian: Den 12. Mannen - English: The 12th Man. - Awards: 5 wins and 4 nominations They were 12 saboteurs. The Nazis killed 11 of them. This is the true story of the one that got away. (This would blow your mind :D ). 4. (I have not see this yet) From 2022 - Title: In Norwegian: Kampen om Narvik - English: Narvik: Hitler's First Defeat. April 1940. The eyes of the world are on Narvik, a small town in northern Norway, source of the iron ore needed for Hiter's war machinery. Through two months of fierce winter warfare, Hitler is dealt his first defeat. 5. (I have not see this yet) From 2022 - Title: In Norwegian: Krigsseileren - English: War Sailor The sailor Alfred is in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean when World War II breaks out. Suddenly the sailors are in the front of the war, without any weapons. 6. (I have not see this yet) From 2022 - Title: In Norwegian: Gulltransporten - English: Gold Run He's not the bravest of men, but he's given a great responsibility and an enormous task - to get the whole Norwegian gold reserve away from the Germans during the invasion of Norway during the outbreak of WW2. Hope this can be of interest for you and that you will react to at least one of these ;) Sure all the people here will love it :D
The Norwegian film "Troll" was actually on top of the list of most streamed films on Netflix in the US (and a lot of other countries) in November last year :-)
I just looked up these on Netflix, Prime, and co., and we have access to many of these. I‘ll have to take a look. Thanks, Tyler; good idea for a video.
There's so many Norwegian shows as well, and you're absolutely right regarding American TV-shows being popular in Norway, I've watched them since the 80s
Skam is huge and has a lot of international fans, but it's not for our age demographic(?), Tyler, so relax;) I believe they did a thing where they published scenes online, a the same time of day as those scenes were happening, so you could watch them "live" in a way(but not really). Objectively it was very well made, but it was for a bit younger people than us.
Occupied and Eyewitness are drama series. “I kveld med Ylvis” (tonight with ylvis) is not the ordinary talk show with comedy brothers Vegard and Bård. It aired some years ago, but still funny
Tyler, if you have Netflix just type in Norwegian and see what comes up, if you also have a VPN and set it to Norway you'll find even more. Beforeigners used to be on HBO, but it's not there anymore, I think it might be on SkyShowtime, it was really funny with ppl coming back from the stone age, the viking era, and the late 1800s. Home for Christmas on Netflix is a bunch of ppl stuck at Oslo Airport during a storm, it's NOT AT ALL the story the woman in your video said it was, it's dubbed to English, but I think you can choose to watch it in Norwegian as well, at least with your VPN set to Norway
Wow how wrong you are. The airport series you are thinking about is called Julestormen ("A storm for Christmas"). "Home for Christmas" is exactly what is explained in the video!
You have to se lykkeland!!! They talk alot of English, and have some amerikansk actors... Yes some love, some drama, some action, but a very good serie, good actors and a good way to learn about how the oil startet in Norway.... 👍👌
One movie you should react to that is super norwegian, is FLÅKLYPA GRAND PRIX. ( there is also a english dubbed version, somewhere on youtube) in English its called PINCHCLIFF GRAND PRIX.. Great fun....
Some of these that are on Netflix has an English dub, I've even seen some series with an english dub that has norwegian accent (aka something we like to call norwenglish)
I don't generally watch much Nordic shows/movies myself, but there's the occasional gem that I wind up enjoying. "Home for Christmas" is definitely one of them (and yes, there is a dub, though I think you'd be able to watch the original Norwegian with subtitles, the IMDB commens reflect that people in general prefer watching it in the original Norwegian with subtitles). The main character and her plight felt very relatable (as a perpetual single person myself - though thankfully her family is nothing like mine). The concept might sound very Hallmark-y, but honestly the show feels much more down to earth than that. It's not a fairytale story, it's a very funny show and I very much recommend both seasons. Other Norwegian made things I would recommend: "Troll Hunter" (Trolljegeren) - which is a mockumentary and it's fantastic, the troll lore and design is taken straight out of our fairytales. "The wave" (Bølgen) - which is a Norwegian disaster movie and really good.
Exit is about a bunch of rich Norwegians that live lifes that are kinda looked down upon in Norway, they are rich from having insider information to do gigant trades operations. They conceal their income and find ways to tax evade. So they are like high brow criminals. They all have different family disfunctions that is highlighted through the show and they mostly use their money to be awful to everyone around them. Its really well made and dont really have any other shows in mind that would be parallell closest would be wolf of wall street, but Exit is a whole different. Skam is a super popular show in norway and is one of the few shows that has taken over elsewhere america even made their own version multiple countries did. Skam means Shame in norwegian and the show is about girls and boys in highschool in Norway and showcases alot of the culture we have around relationships, bullying, rape, sexuality, etnisity osv. The russ traditions is also involved through the whole show so gives alot of insight in Norway as a whole.
@@exentr They took stories from different teenagers in norway and made the stories kinda connect togheter, its realistic about being young in norway since its kinda a collage of experiences. But its also the most dramatic stories of those teenagers. so spinning them in succession might make it a bit more artificial than how it actually is.
@@adrianstange9594 I see. I think we can call Skam hyper realistic fiction but I am not all sure. A serie like Le Bureau des Légendes is concidered hyper realistic. Le Bureau is an intelligence thriller. Ofcourse drama all way through.
One of my favorite Norwegian movies is: 'The kings Choice(Kongens Nei)'. It is a true story about when the germans invaded norway in 1940, with one of the main goals to capture the king and the goverment. The King got the choise to surrender to the germans but he refused and said "no, we will not surrender". Because of that the Nazis attaced norway but the norwegians fought back trying their best to defend our country from the nazis wich the germans didnt expect would happen so they where quite surprised, and because of that the royal family and the goverment(regjering) was able to get away and flee to england. This movie is all about a very important part of the norwegian history, so if u are interested to learn more about norwegian history during the war you have to check it out. I can literly watch this movie over and over again, it really gets me every time.
fun fact about skam: Simon Fuller´s production company bought the rights to the show, so you can find one or two seasons in american. They are almost word for word the same lines and show as the norwegian one, just adapted to american cultur and high school life :)
There is a very old British movie from 1965 called "The Heroes of Telemark". with Kirk Douglas, Richard Harris and Michael Redgrave. Also in this movie it's about the heavy water that Hitler needed to make an atom bomb.
If you truly want to learn about Norwegian culture you should watch four seasons of the youth series /Skam/. This is the core of the Norwegian soul as they like to say.
I'm Swedish but just want to add, Beforeigners is really good. It's on Prime or Apple in the US, or HBO Max for EU at least. It's mostly a detective-cop show, with the sci-fi element of all these different humans from all time periods appearing in modern day society. It also tackles the issue of modern immigration from an other perspective, integration, assimilation and rights. While being a mystery show. It did quite well internationally. I wish she had brought up Lilyhammer, it is with Little Steven! Steven Van Zandt from Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, and from Sopranos. I really think you'd like it! It was on Netflix. Skam (2015-17) was HUGE internationally. It is very different from American teen shows, like very very different. And it was different from most shows. It's a realistic drama where each season you follow different character in a friend group. After the huge success of Skam, so many countries did an adaptation. USA bought the rights to the show in 2016 and did a US version. It failed. While the original version did great in the US, despite of it being in Norwegian and with subtitles. Also Scandinavian tv shows, aren't really "translatable" into how a American tv show is built, for the most part. It is not just the language and the culture in where it takes place that is different, most shows are usually built up in very different ways. The Christmas series she is talking about is not like Hallmark movies. We get all your Hallmark movies here too. But even though the idea is similar, the executions are very different.
Beforeigners was just genius. Two others I lived were Lykkeland and Occupied. Occupied, I started re watching and it now takes on a more scary tone given the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
I suggest reacting to a couple Norwegian artists if possible. I and probably many other music lovers would appreciate that. Here are a few suggestions I think show a decent variety of popular Norwegian musicians: AURORA, Alexander Rybak, Karpe, Sigrid, TIX, Kurt Nilsen, girl in red, a-ha, DumDum Boys, Marcus & Martinus, Astrid S, Jahn Teigen. I know you probably wouldn’t fit them all in a video, but pick a couple
Lillyhammer on Netflix is fairly popular. With Steven van Zandt(from E street band and Sopranos), a mafioso in witness protection in Norway. Culture crash ahead!
I'm not Norwegian but I love a lot of Norwegian shows and movies 'Lilyhammer' is a great Norwegian/American show, Almost a Sopranos spinoff. The Varg Veum movies is a must. They are better than most Action movies from the U.S.. You Americans should watch it with subtitles, I can highly recommend it.
Exit is a very good series.... Remained me of a typical American serie.... "Wall Street", money, power, drugs, hoocker and alkohol....and all the drama within 😉🤣
7:04 Multilingual shows is common in the Nordic region, but they're mainly with the Nordics countries in and nordic characters for most of the storyline with a few scenes etc in other countries. Although exceptions that's multilingual with the main plot happening outside the nordic region does happen.
You should react to the Varg Veum movies, they are so good, it's about a Norwegian private investigator that kinda has the police as a rival in investigating different murders and serious crime cases. It's excellent and very thrilling. Éveryone reading this must watch it! It's like a bunch of seperate movies with similar crime themes. They all have English subtitles so it's no problem watching it.
Lykkeland also handels a bit of hove oil changed our society Btw plese give some of these series a shot and watch them they have good texting and pretty much every show has some amount of english in them.
I would check if the show has subtitles, cuz there is usually an option. Though sub and dups in different languages are not unheard of here in the north. You might want to use a VPN for some services, though. It can shake up the roster for what you get.
Beforeigners was a lot of fun because of the weird premise of the series - also some were speaking Norse (which I do not understand at all, so subtitles are a must) - but a very strange and interesting series!
I suggest that you watch the Hollywood movie Heroes of Telemark from 1965 based on the same events as Tungtvannet..... The movie starring Kirk Douglas was shot on location at Rjukan Norway. You can find the complete movie at UA-cam.
You say you don't think Americans would feature people who speak a different language in their shows, but you're forgetting about Spanish, especially Latin American or Mexican Spanish is very popular in American TV.
You should see Skam. And I think Valkyrien was pretty amazing. Love the actors. Its a different language, but I think you can read fast enough for subs? :) I also love Alt for Norge, though its a realitycontest, not a drama.
If you ever "run out" of things to react on, you should start reacting to some of these series! I know the SKAM fanbase loves watching reactions of that series here on youtube : D
09:10 All around the world - not just in Oslo - several rifts/portals through different times in different time periods of Earth start opening and closing, at first, seemingly randomly, with no explanation as to how it is happening or what is the cause. The show starts out in Oslo, where a bunch of groups of people from the Viking Era arrive in the Present through these portals that are in the middle of the Oslo Fjord and some drown, while many are saved by various emergency services and/or private boat owners. After they have all been thoroughly interviewed by the police, they come to realize that what they are saying about being Vikings from the past is less and less likely untrue, as more and more of the Beforeigners are recounting similar details about their life. Stuck in the present, the people of Oslo now have to come to terms with the fact that they have to cohabitate with Viking people, and at first things don't work out because many of the Vikings refuse to let go of their much more violent culture from the past, but then over time, things start to normalize again as much as they can. One particular Viking woman, however, decided that she wanted to become an officer of the law, so she educates herself and goes to school to the point that she's largely familiarized herself with the Norwegian culture and the modern day norms, as well as become largely - but not fully - fluent in Norwegian, and finally went to the Police Academy and managed to pass the tests and gets assigned to a police station in Oslo. This is where the series begins for real, as the second protagonist of the show is finally introduced to us, the woman Viking police partner of the male protagonist we meet shortly after the beginning of the first episode, when the first police responder shows up at the scene. 18:48 Skam is Norwegian for Shame, "You should be ashamed of yourself!" would be "Du burde skamme deg!"
Lykkeland or "State of Happyness" as its called in english, is wery much about the Norwegian Oil-history, the lovedrama is just to catch a bigger audience. But its all good. The Heavywater War" is the best norwegian TV production ever I think. And it is a true story. Based around how the norwegian resistance and the British SOE stoped the nazis atomicbomb project in ww2. Norway was the only contry in the word at the time, who produced D20 (deuterium oxide) heavywater, and it was central to the germans plans. (Its been called the moest sucsessful commandos-raide in WW2 by military analysts ) "Beforigners" is an HBO-produced show (so you should have access to it) Its pritty cool, but a bit silly to. Good production ofc (Hbo after all)
I'm Norwegian, and I'm surprised/been surprised the last decade or so with the amount of actual decent shows and movies from my country. Not that they didn't exist at all before, but it was very far in between (IMO). "Veiviseren" is the oldest real good movie I know of from Norway. ("Pathfinder", 1987). The original "The Thing" uses Norwegian language, location and extras in some/all parts of the movie. Some Norwegian international actors: Kristofer Hivju (GoT) Ingrid Boslo Berdal (Westworld) Liv Ullman (The Emigrants) Thorbjørn Harr (Vikings) There are more and there are older gens and there are half-Norwegians but those should be the ones most easily recognizeable at least for someone like me. Also Aksel Hennie (and others) but he's starred mostly in Norwegian market films.
Would be great to see you react to some Norwegian comedy sketches. Basically Norwegian version of SNL and Mad TV. Check out the sketch "Danish language" (Norwegians making fun of danish) by "Ut I Vår Hage", The music video "ÆØÅ Size Matters" (making fun of Norwegian alphabet) by "Kollektivet"; and "The Cabin" (making fun of Norwegian cabin culture) by Ylvis
One show you might find amusing is Norsemen. It's on Netflix, and was a success in Norway, so they redid the enitre show in English to reach a broader audience. The show is a parody of Vikings, and shows vikings facing modern problems.
I have watched all but 1 of the shows she mentioned and liked them all. Skam was my absolute favorite, along with Magnus which is a very strange and funny detective show with a sort of Dr Who vibe. The premises may sound familiar, but Norwegian shows just feel different. Even Hjem til jul, which sounds very Hallmark, is not sappy and predictable. And has a lot more sex than a Hallmark movie for sure. Exit and Side om side are the most similar to American shows. She didn’t mention Occupied, which is available on Netflix with English subtitles (at least it used to be). It’s about the prime minister being abducted and is quite suspenseful. It also features many different languages, but of course there are subtitles. Norwegians are probably a lot more comfortable with subtitles than Americans since we are used to everything begin our native language. But I have to say that watching more foreign language shows has really been a great experience.
Can recommend beforeingers 👍 awsome serie that gets better and better ☺️ and its season finaly is amazing. And like most HBO series its high budget compared to most Norwegian series.
We have a few nice sitcoms from the 90's and esrly 2000's too though.. also some great comedy shows from around that time .. when comedy was still allowed and actually funny.
Lykkeland, about the oil-industry, is not just a love story. For americans its also interesting because it shows how american oil companies were in Norway to make money and look at it with american eyes. But the norwegian government had other ideas and protected the oil from private cooperations.
' KAMPEN OM TUNGTVANNET' was about Norwegian WW2 guerillas attacking a hydroelectric power plant in Rjukan, Norway, producing as a side effect, Deuteriumoxide, D2O, wich was a neccesary component in hitlers and the nazis plan to develop atomic bombs.. So The attack was very complicated and dangerous, the D20 plant was blown to pieces, and the attckers got away with it :)
They didn't attack the power plant, but the factory in front of it. The building doesn't exist anymore. It was mostly removed in the 70s I believe. The basement of this factory building, where the production took place, has been reopened and is now a museum.
"Exit" was... something. It really showed the insanity and problems rich people come up with due to their having lots of money. I vaguely remember one episode where one of the rich guys was drunk, naked, and tried to axe down a door in anger. It is a bit messed up but seems believable enough.
Being a Millennial and growing up in the 90’s and 2000’s, I saw a lot of French, German and Latin TV shows, besides all the Swedish and somewhat Danish. Especially Swedish children’s TV and teen shows. As well as all the well known American/Canadian ones, but also British and Australian, Home & Away anyone?!😝🫣🫠 Tbh Norway doesn’t do TV very well, except maybe reality. Sweden is better, and especially when it comes to Nordic crime I love Swedish, Danish, Finnish, as well as Icelandic, Polish and British. And my bf, who is from Iceland, works in the movie industry here in Norway, which isn’t huge, and he has worked on big Hollywood productions like the Black Panther, Last Of Us, as well as Norwegian movies, Troll Hunter, Elias and a bunch of TV commercials etc. as he does animation and SPFX.
The makers of Exit collected stories from the more "unknown" parts of the financial elite, and how they operate, both in business and private, and how they fueld by power, money and boredom push their life into the extreme... of sorts... So, it's like taking these stories from real life, and projecting them onto a few characters making up this story.
Nobel was a good show, it did touch on the point that even if Norwegians think our self as a peace nation, because of the Noble Peace Prize, and our work in the middle east, we still where at war in Afghanistan, and how the diplomatic services sometimes my try to influence the Noble institute on there chose of winner. Valkyrien, were remade by the BBC as Temple. Kampen om tungtvannet, are a trilaogual production, it use Norwegian, German and English depending on who talk to who. It also show the reason why it ended up being a team of Norwegian saboteurs that blow up the heavy water plant at Rukan and the transport ferry, that did transport the water from the plant to the railways. Hjem til Jul. Has been remade in English was the series I hate Christmas. The Premise is the same, can tell if the execute it fatefully since I have seen it.
Dub? Is it very uncommon to watch a show with foreign languages with just subs in America? I think a couple of the more recent, somewhat known series from Norway, outside of Norway would be beforeigners and lillyhammer.
Hollywood also made a movie about Kampen om tungtvannet - starring Kirk Douglas and many other Hollywood-stars as well. However Holywood made Americans the heroes, but in reality there were no Americans present, only Norwegians. Heroes of Telemark was the name of the movie and was filmed in Rjukan were it all actually happened. Today a museum attracting people from everywhere wanting to see where it all happened.
what you got to know about norwegian cinema is that unlike american cinema they are not afraid to "go there". Also there's a movie called "troll jegeren" i think you'd enjoy.
I 'm a great fan of the serie Ragnarok. Its about a little bygd where the the gods, Aserne, ind the Giants, jætterne, is alive and are having a battel in present time
I haven't seen Skam either, but I've understood it's about controversial life situations for teens to watch. So it's like a new controvertial theme each year or something. They select a main character for the theme. I'm not a teen so I kind of suspect it would be embarrassing to watch lol.
I do belive some really good ones are forgotten on that list. Would add - Atlantic Crossing: 1940. Norway is occupied by Nazi Germany. Crown Princess Märtha and her children find shelter as political refugees in the White House. - 22 Juli: The terror act in Oslo and Utøya on 22 July 2011. This is the story told from the view of journalists, police, medical professionals and civilians. - Lilyhammer: A New York mobster goes into hiding in rural Lillehammer in Norway after testifying against his former associates. - Ragnarok: Mix of Marvel and Norse mythology, a young boy from a poor family suddenly gets new powers and needs to learn and control them to fight evil. - Rådebank: Car mechanic Glenn-Tore, a car-loving guy know as GT, has charisma and self-confidence to be the small town's popular hunk. Until the day he is dumped by his girlfriend. - Skam: Teen drama: he story of young teenagers and pupils on Hartvig Nissens upper secondary school in Oslo, and their troubles, scandals and everyday life. Each season is told from a different person's point of view. Cheers!
Lykkeland is very good, especially the first season. The second season they unfortunately replaced an actor because he was occupied with other work, and it really took down the quality of the second season. Kampen om Tungtvannet is also very good, and based on a true story. Another one about the war is Max Manus, which is a film, also based on a true story. The ones that created the EXIT series did interviews with guys in finance in Norway and used their stories. It shows that they are absolute narcissists and psychopaths, which make you wonder about politicians, right? Psychopaths and narcissits are always drawn to the top and to power and money. It's a very good series. And if you want to watch two REALLY good Scandinavian series, I can recommend the Danis/Swedish series The Bridge, and that exact version, not the American copy series. The main character Saga is Danish and she's just legendary. The other one is called - and you might have watched this - The Killing. This is the BEST series there is! And this is the American copy version! With a Swede playing one of the main characters. It's just so good, I've watched the whole series like three times or something.
Everyone recommends the Norsemen, but note that you may not like or understand our humor. Scandinavian, especially Norwegian humor, is not something all foreigners understands or find funny as it’s very sarcastic. We love sarcasm and irony here. And there are some elements to understand our humor that only comes with living here, and growing up in the culture. Like inside jokes, and common knowledge as well as norms and social rules etc. Already hard to explain… and even though heavily inspired by the Vikings, it’s at least authentic compared to the Hollywood production one, which was filmed in Ireland. Entertaining, as that’s it’s purpose, but don’t think it is a historical correct, or authentic documentary on Norse way of life and culture. There’s still no proven evidence that the Vikings had tattoos, and the ones in the Vikings are Celtic in style and origin. Not Germanic. The Norwegian version is filmed on location in Norway, at this Viking village outside the city of Haugesund, on the south western coast, and everything is authentic.
A great movie in Norway is: kampen om Narvik
There is also a little older series called “Lilyhammer”, it got some American actors and is very funny. It’s about a mobster that’s going into witness protection program and moves to Norway. It’s pretty hilarious and has subtitles 😊
On Netflix I believe.
I went to the comment section to recommend this. I think you'll like it. You get to see a lot about Frank reacting to Norwegian culture new to him.
This is awesome! It´s with Little Steven from the E street band and the Sopranos! Hilarious show, from a Norwegian point of view anyway ;)
Hei Tyler,
I have meant to write this comment for a long time, and with the topic for this video I feel it's time.
You have expressed interest and excitement for Norwegian history and royalty, so I have some films that I am pretty sure you would like (if you can read subs ;) ).

The Norwegian film "Troll" was actually on top of the list of most streamed films on Netflix in the US (and a lot of other countries) in November last year :-)
Troll er horribel! Men noen liker mora, andre liker dattera...
Trust me, the "Home for Xmas" series are NOTHING like any HAllmark sappy XMas movie....
well at least imo. 😉
Sooo true!
I just looked up these on Netflix, Prime, and co., and we have access to many of these. I‘ll have to take a look. Thanks, Tyler; good idea for a video.
Kampen om tungtvannet is a true story and its crazy good. A brave group of men who did the impossible
You should check out "stories of Norway" it's a comedy show about things that happened in Norwegian history
Totally agree
By Ylvis
There's so many Norwegian shows as well, and you're absolutely right regarding American TV-shows being popular in Norway, I've watched them since the 80s
Skam is huge and has a lot of international fans, but it's not for our age demographic(?), Tyler, so relax;)
I believe they did a thing where they published scenes online, a the same time of day as those scenes were happening, so you could watch them "live" in a way(but not really).
Yeah I think the show is called Hjem til jul, the one she mentioned. It’s also with english dub as well. I loved it, both seasons.
Other Norwegian made things I would recommend:
"Troll Hunter" (Trolljegeren) - which is a mockumentary and it's fantastic, the troll lore and design is taken straight out of our fairytales.
"The wave" (Bølgen) - which is a Norwegian disaster movie and really good.
Kristofer hivju is acctually my neighbor. He living a normal life here, shopping in the lokal store and living like every other norwegian
Isn't Skam concidered near hyper realistic about being young in today's Norway?
You can choose language on Netflix. Both audio and text
It’s not Norwegian, but you should se Broen (the bridge). Really good 👍🏻
There is a very old British movie from 1965 called "The Heroes of Telemark". with Kirk Douglas, Richard Harris and Michael Redgrave. Also in this movie it's about the heavy water that Hitler needed to make an atom bomb.
Beforeigners is really good. I love that show.
If you truly want to learn about Norwegian culture you should watch four seasons of the youth series /Skam/. This is the core of the Norwegian soul as they like to say.
Eeeh that is v e r y debatable
"Dag". About a couple's therapist who believes no one should be in a relationship 😂 Really love that one
"Wall Street", money, power, drugs, hoocker and alkohol....and all the drama within 😉🤣
I agree with other saying to watch "Lilyhammer". Its so funny. I think I will rewatch it this weekend.
6:48 : Yes, we usually are multi lingual if the story has other than norwegian caracters
Can you see the first episode of «Side om Side (Side by Side). It is with English subtile on some videos on UA-cam.
7:04
Multilingual shows is common in the Nordic region, but they're mainly with the Nordics countries in and nordic characters for most of the storyline with a few scenes etc in other countries.
Although exceptions that's multilingual with the main plot happening outside the nordic region does happen.
I kinda want to watch Tyler react to "side om side" now xD
It would be hilarious
Wow yes, so strange she didn't include Norsemen. Since it's in English and AWESOME
Lykkeland also handels a bit of hove oil changed our society
Btw plese give some of these series a shot and watch them they have good texting and pretty much every show has some amount of english in them.
You should watch "Kampen om Narvik" which is a new Norwegian blockbuster that just hit Netflix in the US
I would check if the show has subtitles, cuz there is usually an option. Though sub and dups in different languages are not unheard of here in the north. You might want to use a VPN for some services, though. It can shake up the roster for what you get.
Dissapointed that I didn't see "førstegangstjenesten" in here
Beforeigners was a lot of fun because of the weird premise of the series - also some were speaking Norse (which I do not understand at all, so subtitles are a must) - but a very strange and interesting series!
"Trolljegerne"... Best norwegian documentary ever made
You should see Skam.
I’m the neighbor to the producer of Lykkeland :-) nice series
(Its been called the moest sucsessful commandos-raide in WW2 by military analysts )
"Beforigners" is an HBO-produced show (so you should have access to it)
Its pritty cool, but a bit silly to. Good production ofc (Hbo after all)
American movies, tv-shows, books, music, etc. is very much consumed in the rest of the world. So many Norwegians watch American tv-shows and movies😊
Some Norwegian international actors:
Kristofer Hivju (GoT)
Ingrid Boslo Berdal (Westworld)
Liv Ullman (The Emigrants)
Thorbjørn Harr (Vikings)
There are more and there are older gens and there are half-Norwegians but those should be the ones most easily recognizeable at least for someone like me.
You should watch exit haha
Can you react to "Dinner for one"??It's really funny!!All Norwegians watch it the day before Christmas.
this lady is the personification of tell me you have not watched the show without telling me
Can recommend beforeingers 👍 awsome serie that gets better and better ☺️ and its season finaly is amazing. And like most HBO series its high budget compared to most Norwegian series.
We have a few nice sitcoms from the 90's and esrly 2000's too though.. also some great comedy shows from around that time .. when comedy was still allowed and actually funny.
In my russ time me and my friends had a buss named EXIT after the series
Lykkeland, about the oil-industry, is not just a love story. For americans its also interesting because it shows how american oil companies were in Norway to make money and look at it with american eyes. But the norwegian government had other ideas and protected the oil from private cooperations.
' KAMPEN OM TUNGTVANNET' was about Norwegian WW2 guerillas attacking a hydroelectric power plant in Rjukan, Norway, producing as a side effect,
Deuteriumoxide, D2O, wich was a neccesary component in hitlers and the nazis plan to develop atomic bombs.. So
The attack was very complicated and dangerous, the D20 plant was blown to pieces, and the attckers got away with it :)
Her last mention; Skam" means "Shame", and yes it's supposed to very good. I haven't seen it.
I am in Stavanger where Oil story is set in
Being a Millennial and growing up in the 90’s and 2000’s, I saw a lot of French, German and Latin TV shows, besides all the Swedish and somewhat Danish.
Julerstorm on Netflix was very good mini Christmas series
Even USA has a version of SKAM. It's called SKAM Austin, but it's very polished compared to the original and the European versions.
you should look more into the Heavy water and how the Germans used it to build atomic-bombs. very interesting!
Skam is definitely the most successful of these, and the most relevant to react to. Also Stories from Norway by Ylvis is hilarious.
"SKAM Austin" (the American series) is a copy of the orginal Norwegian series "SKAM"
As a norwegian I have only seen Skam. Valkyrie and Beforeigners sounds interesting.
You need to watch kampen om tungtvannet, its a true story and its really impressive what they did. Alot of english the rest suptitles english
You should se "The Battle for the heavy water (series from 2015), The Kings Choise (movie from 2016) and Amundsen (movie from 2019)
The only one of those I have heard of is Skam (Shame) but I haven't seen it...
Since you're in the TV world. You should learn about Hotel Cæsar.
what you got to know about norwegian cinema is that unlike american cinema they are not afraid to "go there". Also there's a movie called "troll jegeren" i think you'd enjoy.
You should watch the movie King of Devil's Island (Kongen av Bastøy)!
I 'm a great fan of the serie Ragnarok. Its about a little bygd where the the gods, Aserne, ind the Giants, jætterne, is alive and are having a battel in present time
Other good series to watch are:
Berlinerpopplene
Himmelblå
A Storm For Christmas
She really undersells the plot for EXIT
Try an episode of Norsemen or Lillyhammer. Both are on Netflix.
You should do reactions to these shows
Beforeigners was a cool show. It should be available on US HBO
Would add
- Atlantic Crossing: 1940.
Ingen Brødrene Dal?
cool!! Nice video!!!!
Ragnarok on Netflix is also nice.
