Video is clearly meant to appeal to a specific target audience that I'm not a part of, but I went and accidentally found it really funny anyway despite knowing absolutely nothing about cube puzzles.
@@metachirality well, the old versions (depicted in this video too) are equally bad - and of course the main feature of the official rubik's cube product was being unbreakable, so your children can throw it at through a wall, and then it still survives to your grandchildren. I love it when people are clearly passionate about something I personally know nothing about. Like yeah those all sound like annoying little nitpicks but it sure is fun to hear about it
Got recommended this despite not engaging with Rubik's cube content for the past 2 or so years. Used to collect nxnxn cubes until I got to 12x12 I think; then I stopped while finishing college. Loving the humor, and this might convince me to go buy a weird cube or just alternative puzzle like a pyramix now, congrats.
This feels like the classic case of: "This product is super popular!" "Great! Now what?" "... How about we use [insert feature here] and put it on [insert cube here]?" "I don't know... [Insert feature here] wouldn't work well with [insert cube here] and-" "We'll make money~" "Let's do it!"
I love that the "Super Fisher Cube" from Calvin's puzzle actually makes it easier than a standard one because you cant hit parity if you know which way round middle layer edges go
I'm not ashamed to admit I own most of the cubes mentioned. Hate solving them though, so I never do unless a guest comes over and thinks it would be fun to scramble all the cubes on my shelf
The image in the video is the puzzle's solved state. The goal of the puzzle is to get it into that shape, with the weird bit sticking out like that. If you're asking how it turns, it's mechanically the same as a regular 4x4x4 cube, but some of its pieces have different external shapes, which is why it looks weird from the outside.
Been trying to find one 3x5x5 cross puzzle with hexagons at each end but can't remember its name. Made up by a guy who made a contest for people to innovate on the design and I can't find it anywhere. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
and about the even layer dodecahedra the newer versions that are being made are only being made in stickerless which means you cant get the proper version if you get one of those :/
If you meant supercubes, then yes, picture cubes require the centre pieces to be rotated a certain way, so they are supercubes. The stickers I mentioned in the video are just one way of requiring the centres to be oriented, I've also seen putting arrows on each sticker and a few others
@@LeoStaley Sorry about that; I did mean "you". I'm saying I see you in comments sections all the time in various videos I watch. I am glad that you have wandered onto the comments section of a video of mine as well. I acknowledge that I completely ignored the subject matter of the comment you wrote, so I'll try to make up for it: It is true that the ShengShou Crazy 2x2x2 and Crazy 2x2x4 are very difficult to obtain as of now, because they were first produced many years ago and they haven't been restocked in a while. I only brought them up in this video because the entire video is just me cherrypicking the funniest quirks I could find and I thought that Crazy 2x2x4 existing and not the 2x2x2 cross cube itself was especially funny (and I have pointed it out in the past), so I thought it would be appropriate for this video
Yeah it's unfortunate that a lot of the nonwca puzzles aren't really standardized so you get this mishmash of nonsense. There are certain cube collectors who will basically buy anything and these companies feed into that idea. Also, I have to imagine that some of the designers over at Calvin's want to be the next Erno Rubik.I mean I don't blame them, it is the most popular toy of all time.
Most of the designers of the base puzzles are independent of Calvin's Puzzle, but their names get put on the puzzle and in the full name of the puzzle. The video is more about the variations, which are all done by Calvin
Nice video! But none of the twisty puzzle companies you talked about are Rubik's Cube companies, as only Spin Master has the rights to that name. I'm sure you can relate to me getting mildly annoyed about a detail like that :)
The title is clickbait. "Twisty Puzzle Companies" would have indeed been more accurate, but I think it's a less recognisable term and the one I did use is still reasonably related to what I'm talking about; twisty puzzles are often colloquially referred to as "Rubik's cubes". You are correct, though
A lot of these feel like gimmicks of the exact same mechanism, just changing up the shape, and I know a lot of people are fascinated with this type of puzzle, but I'm actually kind of glad that I never became one of those people who's really good at solving them, not because it's bad or anything, but because I don't see a genuine advantage to perfecting the skill. What is it transferable to? Other shapes of the exact same product? There's all running an army of people out there who can solve these things in a matter of seconds, and computers that can solve it even faster, but what are they contributing to the world in general? I'm genuinely asking because I don't know why it's so popular.
@@tastyl2356 Yes, I'm not challenging that, but I literally don't understand the fascination. Do you? From my perspective it's a bit like collecting decorative jacks. I know each is functional, but they seem functionally identical, so the interest lies in the visual novelty?
there's multiple parts to the cubing community - some enjoy speedsolving more than collecting various puzzles. speedsolving, especially depending on the puzzle requires years of optimisation and dedicated practice. however, on the collecting side, most puzzle vary drastically in their solves. it is true that some puzzles are simply shape mods of others, however it is far from the truth to say that they are all functionally identical. even in official puzzles, for example, take a skewb - a puzzle that rotates around its corners. this clearly cannot be compared to a 3x3 for example.

I can't believe I forgot about ShengShou's higher-order circle cubes being asymmetric
Their crazy 4x4 v1 is not a real 4x4 :(
Question about the orbit cube variant: can the round pieces on the non-red/orange sides not be turned 90 degrees?
@@nerdiconium1365 The gimmick of the Orbit Cube is that, when you turn a face 90deg, the four circles on the inside also turn 90deg in the same direction. You can't turn the circles manually. So:
