My parents were married, and my dad always provided for us but he pressed me about getting my education and being able to be self-sufficient because that's also just part of being an adult and survival. And I get it as an adult because my mom is extremely dependent on my step dad now financially especially since she's in her 60s because of her line of work. her line of work would not provide a good life for her. On the other hand, my job and what I earn along with my degrees and certifications - should my husband and I split right now, I can live alone and support myself and be just fine.
Likewise! My father ensured his daughters were independent because he know the caliber of men in the community.

What kills me about this convo, it's almost always men talking about how black woman don't do this or that. But they never bring up all the black men, who lead woman straight to hell, poverty, infidelity, single motherhood, inability to match income. They never discuss their credentials on what has taught them how to lead? Many of them don't want to lead they want to control. I wish those people would ask these men what is the difference between leading and controlling and what is a partnership/relationship?

Is there a such thing as "the angry black woman?" Yes. But black men are angry also. How about both black men and women need to treat each other better. There's blame to go around on both sides. We, black men and women need to raise our children correctly. So they can grow into better people and continue that positive cycle. I no longer feel black men should publicly comment on the state of relationships in the black community. The conversation devolves into unproductive debates. We should have the conversation privately and move accordingly. If I notice certain behaviors that are not productive I move on. If a TV show or a movie is sending a message I may not feel is productive for black men or the community I will stop watching.
So the experience and struggles of an entire demographic (that makes up half of our race) should be ignored and unheard just because it's "inconvenient"? And y'all wonder why men committ suicide at a significantly higher rate than women.

Black woman here that grew up in another country (Canada) and now reside in the U.S. 🙋🏾♀️ This rhetoric is diabolical and getting old - fast. I grew up in a two parent household with parents celebrating their 48th wedding anniversary next month. I have six siblings - three brothers and three sisters. We know how to love, communicate and all have successful careers. I have personally done self reflection and the work necessary to continue to evolve in this human experience we call life. I want a partner not a dependent- someone who we take care and serve each other. We operate in reciprocity.
