Love your style. I’ve watched a few others do sunflowers 🌻. This is my favorite so far. Very surprised you don’t have many more subscribers. Secretly glad.
Seriously, I have no idea what this man is doing... it's like you read about sculptors who see a sculpture in a block of stone... All his strokes look absolutely meaningless till suddenly they all come together. My brain is unable to even imagine how he decided what to put where. This is amazing
I'm such a fan. You're tutorials are some of the best on UA-cam. Great at explaining what's going on when you do what you do. That's been so helpful. I hope you keep making videos. Your work is outstanding.
Your work is so brilliant. I had great success with the white daisey tutorial of yours. All my friends and family think I am amazing! Hoping to paint these sunflowers, and try to come close to your mastery. Thank you. Amber from Oregon 🇺🇸.
This was so fun to watch and informative. I find negative painting so difficult. I can't seem to get my mind around it. Beautiful sunflowers! Thank you.
Rick, indeed, you ARE the MASTER ! MARVELOUS. A respected commentary, you need " like a hole in the head ". WHen I had my popular weekend. " DIAL-A- DEMO " WC presentation exercise in the ' 50's, the members in the audience would be " entertained " when I a would random SPATTER and use a razor blade for fine line enhassments. WHY would you not " enhance ".your remarkable masterworks with casual controlled occasional spatter ? I Apolgize for being so " bold " .
I love the way your subject emerges out of nowhere... And i always wonder about the placement and shapes of your darkest values.... Why this shape and why here.... But they seem so right when the painting is finished.... Amazing....i have tried using your style of negative painting... Have made at least two small paintings of ivy leaves.. Negative style... And of course they are nowhere near your level of painting.. But they have been appreciated by all my friends and family..... Thanks very much....i got to see lots of your paintings
Wow, amazing Rick. Question: as you are painting negative with your dot dot dash dot, do you have a pattern in mind or is it just developing? I can see sometimes you are defining a stem, but not all the time. To me they are just interesting shapes??? Also, I LOVE that you soften off with a spray bottle, that was an ahhhha moment for me, and I love seeing how you layer the background which has always stumped me...thanks so much, bring on more!!!
Thanks Susan. You are correct. While I have a general layout and flow in mind, I'm developing the painting as I go. I work to create interesting shapes that weave over and under other shapes. I work a lot with shapes in negative space. Every brush stroke creates new shapes. I develop my center of interest first and it's where I place my strongest value contrast. I like to create lost and found edges as I go.
It took me three tries at this to understand what you were talking about. After the third I realized just how much talent it takes to do this. I put my paints away, hung my head, and walked away. Lol
Sometimes someone will paint a flower then ask if it needs a background. I try to design the whole space as one. I value the shapes between objects as much as the objects themselves.
Very nice example of negative painting! I do follow most of what you have done, however I don't quite get the white area on the lower center of the top flower. Could you explain the strategy? My eye is drawn right away to that area, followed by a feeling of discord. Not meaning to be critical, I just need to understand. Thanks!
Hi Rick... wonderful demonstration.. thank you as always.. could you possible just put a note on what colors you used in this demonstration.. it would be so helpful.. Thanks again..
So beautiful as it develop step by step. I have a question , please ...Is it salt what you sprinkled over the center of the flowers , or something else ??
I like your style of painting, it is very soft and delicate. Just like the flowers are supposed to appear. I have been trying with watercolor now for about a month. I always used mostly oils. I found that water colors are not as easy as the oils to paint with. The same with acrylics. But I am getting there. Thanks of sharing. By watching you I realize that using water colors the hand needs to be loose and free. just let it go. Great!!!
Great Comments Rut Brea! I'm glad you got some benefit from my video. There are many ways to approach painting with watercolor. There are times I'm very rigid when I paint, but I get the most enjoyment when I let watercolor be watercolor.
Fabulous painting! Thanks for sharing this! I would appreciate it if you would share what paper, paint and brushes you use...I keep buying supplies and want to get what really works. Thank you!

This an approach that I enjoy. We tend to focus so much on the interior space of objects and ignore the space between objects.
Sometimes someone will paint a flower then ask if it needs a background. I try to design the whole space as one. I value the shapes between objects as much as the objects themselves.
The most important part is to experiment and have fun!!!
Amazing!
Excellent work!
Thank you!

Thank you ! Yes, I put a very wet wash in the center of the flower and sprinkle a little coarse salt on it for texture.

Hi Margie, I have all my supplies listed on the studio page of my website. Here is the link: rsurowiczart.com/studio/
What did you use to sprinkle the center before going on to the petals? Was it salt?
Coarse salt while the paint is still quite wet.
@@RickSurowiczWatercolor thank you for letting me know. Appreciate your work and time
