  • I have made this video showing how I draw a botanical subject in graphite. So far in this project I have made some shorter videos showing my students signed up to my botanical art course, how to; draw a sketch roughly, make a line drawing for tracing and make a tonal value reference. Additionally, one further video shows how to lay fine graphite shading using various grades of graphite pencils.
This video runs from using the line drawing with both the tonal value reference and the Poppy seedcase.
One point to note is that the view I have of the seedcase is different to the view for those watching the video, because of the placement of the camera.
I hope that you enjoy this and find it useful whether you are an experienced artist or want to draw or paint botanically.
Gaynor is a botanical artist who gives private tuition, teaches courses, workshops, weekly classes and uses her years of experience in her online course.

I loved this video. I’m starting to study botanical drawing and watercolor. I will subscribe to your channel, as I’m passionate about this course of study and I have the Huntington Library in Pasadena, CA and Descanso Gardens as lovely resources. You’re a wonderful artist and thank you for sharing and teaching through UA-cam. I look forward to watching more on your channel and if you come to Pasadena to come each, let me know!!

Hei Ann, I'm glad you liked the video although the sound was low. I'm afraid I actually have to agree with you as I too had a little difficulty once it was processed. I had a lot of problems saving it and by 02:00, when the fourth attempt eventually succeeded, I decided not to mess with it. But this is a learning curve for me and the first time I've done a voice-over. The art is one thing, the rest I'm learning on the job! Do let me know in the future how future videos sound to you.

a a very helpful and enjoyable video, thankyou Gaynor. I would like to learn how to illustrate - show shine on fruit such as apples and pears? To date I have yet to find a video showing how to do this.

Just beautiful! Please tell us what kind of paper this is and if you use a fixative to protect it..

Thank you Patricia. The drawing is done on Bristol board, a very smooth paper and I haven’t used a fixative. If I have to move the picture much, I might use a fixative, but I am careful that the one I use doesn’t change the colour of either the paper or the graphite.

The burnishing tool is a Decoupage tool from Fred Aldous. You can buy it inline. Sorry about the delay in reply.
