CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Dorothy (Diana Ross) and the others are surprised by the Lion (Ted Ross) who tries to scare them by singing "I'm a Mean Old Lion."
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Sidney Lumet's The Wiz is the film version of the popular Broadway musical that retells the events of L. Frank Baum's classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the eyes of a young African-American kindergarten teacher who's "never been below 125th Street." Leaving a large family dinner to chase her dog into a snowstorm, Dorothy (Diana Ross) is swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the land of Oz -- which looks suspiciously like a skewed version of the run-down Manhattan of the late '70s. Landing on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, the puzzled Dorothy is greeted by munchkins who peel themselves from a graffiti mural and sing to her about the Wiz (Richard Pryor), a powerful wizard living in Emerald City who can help her get home. On her journey down the yellow brick road, she encounters a garbage-stuffed scarecrow (Michael Jackson) in a junkyard, a broken-down tin man (Nipsey Russell) caught in the decay of an old amusement park, and a cowardly lion (Ted Ross) posing as a stone statue outside a museum. The quartet tangles with a subway station that comes to life, a poppy den, and a gaggle of motorcycle henchman on their way to the Wiz -- who orders them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West (a sweatshop tyrant) before he will grant them their wishes. The Wiz has about double the large-scale production numbers of The Wizard of Oz (1939), with songs written and composed by Charlie Smalls.

Ted Ross somehow managed to play the Lion with the perfect mix of masculinity and flouncy flamboyancy.
lonesavior n that's why he won a Tony
lonesavior don't most men? Lol.😊
lonesavior I love it too!!! He’s probably one of my characters in the Wiz.
lonesavior he was on the Broadway play as the lion also
lonesavior Intersections
Parts of this movie used to scare the crap out of me as a kid
Yes haha , and the witch the most of all with her pointy teeth !
For me it those growing bouncy things down in the subway. Scared the piss out of me as a 5 year old when I saw this w/my parents at the movies
Some of the reviews for the film back then said that the movie was indeed scary for kids and silly for adults. I can see how some of the things in it would be scary for small kids like the pillars in the subway station tearing apart from ceilings, the trash cans with teeth, the bouncing puppets that grew bigger and bigger chasing the 5 characters. Even those ugly flying monkeys were kinda scary! LOL!!
Then again, the same was said about the MGM movie in its day, that children got scared and adults thought it was just silly fun. But that's Oz for you! The books have some pretty scary moments, like when the Wicked Witch's wolves attack and the Tin Woodman chops all their heads off.
MaskedMan66 Every version of Oz has scared kids.
RIP to Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Michael Jackson, Thelma King , and Richard Pryor they were great in the movie if miss anyone please accept my apologies.
Lena Horn :-)
Don't forget Mable King.
vcd
Willie Seals III Diana Ross
KayKay 122405 she is still alive I believe
The snarls are hilarious.
Along with the slight whimper(Ahem) at the end.
I die everytime.
Ikr
He and Bert Lahr both gave their Lions distinctive voices and growls!
Reminds me of the Ultimate Warrior
Ted Ross rocked HARD on this song! Now, wouldn't y'all agree?
Ndusk he'll yeah ready to fight turn ur day into night
He put his heart in soul into it!
Yes, he killed it.
Yeah he did.
Ndusk yes he did this was my favorite part
"Ready to fight and turn your day into night cuz I'm a mean old lion" That's a cold line!
Lmaoo
Common mean old Lion W 💀
But he was scared lol
@@pCOCKPRO11 True but he had em shock till Toto pulled his card lol
@@emblem2425but in the subway he went blow for blow for Dorothy..he wasn't letting nothing hurt her ❤😊
R.I.P. Ted Ross (1934-2002) (The Cowardly Lion), Nipsey Russell (1918-2005) (The Tin Man) and Michael Jackson (1958-2009) (The Scarecrow). Some trivia: Both Ted Ross and Mabel King who played Evillene The Wicked Witch Of The West were the only two original Broadway cast members from the original 1975 Tony Award Winning Broadway Musical to reprise their roles in the film. Ted Ross won a Tony Award for his role as The Cowardly Lion in the original Broadway Musical.
You are awesome sauce, BayareaGuy06. Stay knowledgeable.
They should have used Stephanie Mills instead of Diana Ross. She was leaps and bounds better vocally, but Berry Gordy pushed for Diana Ross, and she was more marketable. They didnt even consider Stephanie Mills.
R.I.P: Lena Horne, Mabel King and can't forget Richard Pryor.
digitalartwerks The first director quit because he didnt want Diana Ross playing in the movie, because she was too damn old. Diana Ross was 34 when this movie was made. Dorothy was a 12 year old girl. The movie bomb because of the backlash that Stephanie Mills wasnt pick for the role.
digitalartwerks And Stephanie vocally could hold her own against Michael Jackson better than Ross.
When he hits Tinman with his tail.....priceless!
Lmfao that's literally one of the funniest parts outta the whole moive 😂
Jan Terrell
THAT should have been a giveaway right there.
"you brute you brute you brute!"
Blazing saddles
I am tickled that his paws have heels on them!! LOL
all these years i never noticed the heels lol
OMG!!! That is too funny!!! LOL!!!
lion got those Pimp heels
+Lemon Cake huh I GB RT dim to
That's cause he's a "Dandy" Lion. lol
“And if I happen to let’cha sliiide! Don’t stand there run ‘n hide!” I just love that part 🤣
😅😅😅 that my favorite part to cuz I know Leo's and that statement is true 😅. Remember Joseph Jackson was a Leo too. I understood MJ when he talked about Joseph he was NO JOKE. My mom was the female Joseph 😅
Those horns are EVERYTHING! !!!
+DextersLab3000 Thats whats missing from todays music,, a smoking brass section!!
MrDavidr86 bruh.... you ain't never lied. Everything is digital and empty and flat sounding.
I'm in total agreement with you sir!!
+DextersLab3000 dvschv
yes sir I love the way the music was arranged, the bass line in the part after this tho was funky
The arrangement on this song is EVERYTHING!!!
Quincy jones!
The horns make this song sound beyond epic!!
Love the sign "Don't Ease". LOL
Obamalies100 me too. LMAO
Especially after ease on down the road
I cannot get over how absolutely insanely brilliant. the musical arrangement is here. Quincy Jones is the greatest to ever do it there will never be another. Absolutely brilliant use of keys. I used to love this song as a kid now I study it.
Absolutely! This album should've won a Grammy and Oscar!!
Agreed! Lion said HOW DARE U TOUCH THE PERSONAGE OF A KING 👑🤨😠 and the swung his tail..turned his nose up like every one was beneath him 😂😂😂...that gets me every time.
I have always loved his strut
He's actually in the for short second
Same! This was my favorite song on the track.
I love this whole scene. What amazes me the most still is how perfectly he sings, pause, throws the mirror, and starts singing again. It was perfect lol
the little crash sound effect from the mirror is precious
The lion was so damn funny and entertaining. Loved this scene 🤣
Fleetwood Coup DeVille!!! 😁
@@tinastardust7793momma had high ideas...u know what am saying 🙃💪🏾👑
for those of you who find this movie scary, if you take the scenes piece by piece with the songs, you might find you are able to relate it to life. the mean old lion is someone afraid to use their own potential. they hide behind pilars of reality they THINK the world wants to see. the song speaks to all the things you expect of a mean old lion. when in fact, he is kind and compassionate and very able to maneuver life if he stopped putting up a facade to others.
This is true. But, they dissect every species into its masculine and feminine. He's tired of the BS. Period.
I believe if you take this movie and relate it to life....it's scarier!
Especially "you can't win, you can't break even and you can't get out of the game."
The reason people find movies scary like this is because they'd seen it when they were infants and it left a mark on them.
@@LemonWedgeinc plus the whole OZ saga was just creepy.. in a Kool way
The only scene though that did look scary was when Dorthory (I forgot how u spell her name) went into Oz and the people from the painting started coming off
This movie will always be a treasured part of my childhood. This scene in particular has always been a favourite. Ted Ross absolutely BELTS the song out! Such a powerful voice. His performance the entire movie is nothing short of masterful.
is it me or was Mike soooo cute here?
Liyah BOSSLADY he was tho
Liyah BOSSLADY he was 20 this is where he 1st met Quincy Jones and fought 4 him to produce thriller
Yes he was , so cute
He was 20 and just about to become the king of pop
He was adorable and killed the role
Ted Ross was pure perfection as the cowardly lion
This is so weird. Diana Ross is the last actor alive as the star of The Wiz
Lol ikr?
Especially when you think about the fact that Michael was the youngest of all of them.
Women live longer , thasounds crazy when you put it that why though
The Wiz of Star Wars. Lol!
I'm with you y'all
Can anyone else see Cee-Lo Green as the lion? It just sparked in my head.
+LaekoStormz You are sooo right !! I guess he didn't want to type cast himself. He would have been the best choice for the live version on NBC tonight.
Omg I didn't think of that so true
clearly!lol
Omg....yessssss ... U are so right😂😂😂
Yes I see it too
Oh come on, they ended it at the best part. "He bit my paw aaahhhh"
chadelowat lol know right!
exactly lol
+chadelowat Where have you seen it?
Bella Juncker my mom bought the movie
+chadelowat Lmao! One of my favorite childhood movies!
No matter what anyone says this movie is a classic! It's a terrific revamp on the Wizard of Oz. it should be viewed by all
That bass line and those horns were thumping hard, this groove is epic!
I love how the street sign says "Don't Ease". 🤣
Watching this as a kid I wasn't scared of the lion cuz I was like "Kitty! 😍 I wanna hug him!" Now im older I'm like that still but it's more like "you betta work Mr. Lion they don't know who they mess in with!" 😂
☠☠☠☠😂😂😂😂😂
Stick wit the big kitty and you'll be in heaven 💛🦁⭐
The lion statue really scared the hell out of me as a kid. I still remember the one nightmare i had
"And if I happen to let you sliiiide.....don't stand there, run and hide." Love it.
Solitude4SP me too lol
I hope their costumes are in the African American museum.
smooth persuader me too. They’re amazing
They are amazing. And Michael Jackson does such an amazing job of selling those rubbery legs on Scarecrow. Despite all his troubles, he was an incredible performer.
The Real Hillary what exactly is your purpose
@Rip Van Winkle You do know this movie was an allegory to slavery (well, Jim Crow more specifically), right? LOL
@Rip Van Winkle Wtf are YOU on, talking about this movie being made before the the end of segregation 😂😂😂
That lion eyes moving and him jumping out the staute scared the mess out of me😂😂😂
2:11-2:19 he was working hard to hit that note! My favorite part!😭
1:29-1:40 you just gotta love his struttin'!
Only Ted Ross could pull this role off. No one else.
@@WUGGA21nah
Hahaha, the lion is wearing platforms! That's some funky disco shit!
Fun fact - the Lion and the Wicked Witch are played by the actor/actress who played them on Broadway
Yup! In fact, Ted Ross got a Tony for his work.
@@MaskedMan66 - Cool! :)
Who else know this song word for word
me
me lol
Me!!
guilty.. lol
K cool
RIP Mean Old Lion.
I THOUGHT TED ROSS!,WAS ABSOLUTELY PHENOMINAL! IN THIS MOVIE!!!! "The Wiz",is definitely one of my favorite movies!!!!
The horns in this song are everything!!
Imagine how long this lion was chilling in that statue, waiting for some random sucker to walk by. Dedication.
Love how The Lion is staring at himself in the mirror all vain. Then gets ticked-off again at Dorothy and the gang.
Oscar worthy musical performance!!! That music was incredible, the horn section ❤️! They were robbed in 1978!
41 yrs ago still my fav movie 💕
1:17 Wached a thousand times -never realized the sculpture of Wicked Witch in background
😳
I think that's what's actually on the pillars at the New York Public Library.
when the lion breaks out that mirror lol I love that part
2:46 😂🤣 'DON'T EASE'. PRICELESS! I NEVER NOTICED THAT BEFORE! 😂🤣
"You know im ready to fight, turn ya day into night cus ima mean ole lion" idk why that one line always pops in my head
It's sad I am a 90's baby and know this WHOLE movie word for word. Let's just say I blew the tape. My dad brought me like 8 copies :D lmao
Guala PRETTY LOL I thought I was the only person who could say that. I know every line from this movie and I think I will watch it soon.
Guala PRETTY im a 2000s baby, i love this movie too😂2001 to be precise
Guala PRETTY well damn! 😂😂
Ariana is a great picture
Lmao 🤣 my daughter is a early 90’s baby too and I bought the vhs 📼 tape for her too🤩
Ted Ross was an accomplished broadway actor at the time, but he was simply perfect for this role. Noone period could've done it better by a country mile.
Micheals reaction: Dorothy I think we just got musically jumped by a lion @.@
We used to have a chow-chow that looked like a lion, and my sister used to sing this song to him..
i have GOT to get a hand mirror like that one!
I always loved the way the lion struts.
I love this song! No one did it better than Ted Ross, baby!
That arrogant switch up at 2:26 gets me everytime😂😂😂
U know I'm ready to fight & turn ur day into night cus I'm a mean ole lion
I am honestly glad that Ted had the role of the lion. He was very entertaining ❤
Watching this movie as kid was only way my mom kept me my siblings entertained as kid my gosh! Now my kids calling me old love going back in time my happiest memories
"Cause am a Mean Old 🦁 Lion, if I happen to let you slide, you just caught my better side" lol Still Listening 2019 🍷❤️
Many actors have played this version of the Cowardly Lion, but Ted Ross beats them all!
Now this is what I call disco really talented these celebrities leave long lasting impressions on us I love it when he say you know I'm ready to fight and turn yo day into night😂😂
1:19 that trumpet sound I dig!
I love The wiz
Me too.
Easily the best song of the movie. This blows "If I were King of the Forest" out of the water. If that Lion jumped out and started singing that song, I'd be too busy applauding to be scared.
4u57inc0v3110 Though I think The Wizard of Oz is far better than this movie you are so right.
4u57inc0v3110 facts
They're two completely different songs reflecting two completely different aspects of the Lion's character. This displays his false bravado, while "King" expresses his heart's desire and ambition. Let's enjoy them both and the legendary performers who sang them..
Ease on Down the Road is better imo
Ease on down is better than king of the forest, by far! That's for white folks anyway 😶🌫️... BUT least we forget "what makes a king out of a slave... COURAGE" who put the ape in apricot WHAT DOES HE GOT THAT I AINT GOT!!!?? (LETS ALL SAY IT TOGETHER) COURAGE! 🫣😅 THAT was the best part of the "king of the Forrest" impassorous, ILL STUFF HIM TOP TO BOTTOMOUS..the lion in any wizard of Oz was a mess 😅
My most favorite character from the Oz world. Each Lion had his own panache, but something about Fleetwood Coupe DeVille, (his mama had high ideas,) tickles the heck out of me. Maybe it's the 70's stack heels, or the fact that I actually saw this movie in the theaters as a 3 yr. old. No matter what, this song and the song of the 1939 Lion always cheer me up.
I love this movie so much I don't care who dislike The Wiz I love it 🎥🎥🎥 I could watch over & over
01:29-01:43- Strutt that stuff, you mean ol' lion you! Gotta love those pimp heels!
Nina I noticed his costume has heels 👠
The girl in it is my Teacher!
@@nahomi7498 which one?
When a teacher gives me a zero on something I worked super hard on😹😹
Those horns are magnificent. 🎺🎺 🦁
Best part about this scene is when I realized he had whittle heals on his paw shoes. 😂😂😂💕💕
I was having a bad day but this video made me smile
the music in this movie is unparalleled for a musical
I 100% recommend watching this masterpiece while drunk or high. It’s so trippy and funny and mesmerizing 😂
his little jumps at 2:00 and when he hits Tinman with his tail is hilarious 😂😂
"I'm ready to fight... I'll turn your day into night... CAUSE I'M A MEAN OL' LION!"😁💚🐓
Toto: "U ain't no mean old lion!!" *bites the lion*
Lion: " OWWWW MY PAW!!!"😰😰😰
Hahaahaha
@1:42, the punch, punch, kick spin, kick move though, do it Ted😂😂
LOVE mean ol lion...I also thought it was hilarious later in the movie when he said his mama named him Coup Deville. LOL
"I remember when my mama said 'Fleet'" "Fleet!" "That's my name, Fleetwood Coupe Deville!"
Ok so I left out Fleetwood & for some reason spelled Coupe incorrectly (I spelled it like a military coup). Believe it or not, I do know the difference. Sorry lion! LOL
Not to worry Melody, I only posted the quote because it made laugh my ass off when I first saw it in the theater.
P.S. I don't know what a 'Coupe' type of car is either. ;-)
LION: Mama had high ideals.
TIN MAN: Yeah.
LION: Y'know what I mean?
TIN MAN: Yeah!
I'm white and I honestly love this movie. To be honest most people problem with it is that they promoted it as being a feature film version of the broadway play but its got almost no resemblance to it.
My life long dream is to play the Lion on Broadway and win a Tony like the Iconic Ted Ross.. even the movie remake 😂🙌👑💯🔥
still slaps till thiz day
The Horn section is on Point
I've seen this video about 50 times. I'm playing the lion in my school production next week and I have been rehearsing this song nonstop. It's really difficult! While scouring every inch of the Internet for information about this song, I started to learn more about Ted Ross. He was born in Ohio in 1934. He dropped out of high school in 1950 and joined the US Air Force. Two years later he performed at an amateur night on furlough with Somewhere Over the Rainbow *from the original Wizard of Oz movie*. He got a role in Buck White which started in California and moved to New York in the late 60's. In the next 3 decades he starred in 4 Broadway plays and 11 films and in 1997, opened a jazz club in his hometown called Your Place. A year later he had a stroke and died in 2002 at the age of 68. This man became a huge inspiration to performers around the world, and left behind an amazing legacy.
I like when he struts down the stairs...with his collar popped up..🤷 well it looks like a collar..😆😆💃💃💃
He had swag
This needs a revival. This is the age of reboots, rehashing, etc after all
Ted Ross was EVERYTHING! 👏 👏 👏
I grew up on this movie I still know all the words to all the songs...❤
My daughter loves this part...
My dad loved this song so much he put on my moms fake fured coats and join in the singing
I loved this movie as a kid. It came out before I was born BUT when I discovered it in the 90s me and my sisters WORE IT OUT 😆
I saw this as a kid and it was magical to me, then. I had waited in anticipation after reading that it was going to star MJ. Watched it with my kids and they loved it, too. I still loved the film and it was great to see my daughter watching it at the same age I was when I saw it. This was my favorite song. By the way, Mr. Ross was the driver in "Arthur".
Ive seen this movie many time its my favorite but one thing ive never seen... the Lions WEARING HEELSSS lmao?!!
ha ha ,there is a first time for everything.
Ted Ross played this part to the max, just like he did in Bingo Long🤩🤩🤩🤩
I like this lion costume better than the one in The Wizard of Oz, although that one was pretty good too.
+Allison Halpin Quick bit of trivia, the original 1939 costume was actually made from lion skins. It weighed about 60 lbs. or so.
+Tiko Lopez Is that right? I have always heard that it was heavy, but never knew that it was made from lion skins. I think they must have dyed it that reddish color - this costume is much more realistically colored.
+Allison Halpin Yes it is true. I think they may have the documentary here on UA-cam about the original Cowardly Lion costume. It was just restored a few years ago. I do enjoy Ted Ross' costume much more. He looks like a furry pimp. LOL
+Tiko Lopez Thanks for the info, I'll look up the documentary - hope it's still on here. One of the reasons I like this costume better is because it's a complete suit, w/pockets and a chain even. Love the heels (what every good, honest pimp needs!!!) and the claws on the toes, too.
I think these paws should have their own place at the Smithsonian, or at least a cameo in Broadway's Kinky Boots maybe.
This movie is a classic! But scares me so bad! Its creepy as hell! LOL
They really didn't plan it out too well. I can see how it's creepy too. I guess that's why it got so many bad reviews.
then dont watch return to oz lol
Love it better than the wizard of oz.
It used too scare me too lol
I’m sorry but when Diana fell I was so weak 😭😂😂
I'm still tryn figure out why the lion is inside a hollow lion statue
Same
This movie is so symbolic! The lion wants to be seen hard like the statue, but he is really soft and cowardly! So cowardly he was hiding in plain sight!!!
The shell is a metaphor.... It kept him from being courageous..
***** Because he is Joel and he is weird. A bit nuts to.
+John Smith Dorothy was nowhere near midlife; she was only 24. And it wasn't Schumacher's idea; he hadn't even been hired when Diana Ross was cast as Dorothy.
Please I use to love the mirror scene and I would recreate it and throw my mini mirror at the wall LMFAO
