  • In our second video honouring Robert Burns, National poet of Scotland, we present John's rendition of Leezie Lindsay. It is featured on the CD "Raised on Songs and Stories". The video features beautiful drone footage of Duncansby Head Beach Lighthouse, Scotland. Enjoy!
From tunearch.org: The song was first published in Johnson's Scots Musical Museum, based on an older song (and air) to which poet Robert Burns contributed four lines, evidently intending to write more. The greater part of the whole older ballad was published by Jamieson in his Popular Ballads (1806). It relates the tale of Ronald MacDonald, the heir of Kingcausie, who went to Edinburgh to seek a wife. He first had to seek permission of his mother, who consented if only he went clothed as a poor man.

    LYRICS
Will ye gang tae the highlands, Leezie Lindsay,
Will ye gang tae the highlands wi' me
Will ye gang tae the highlands, Leezie Lindsay
My bride and my darling tae be.
Tae gang tae the heilands wi' you sir,
Would bring a salt tear tae my e'e
and even the green glens and woodlands
And the streams o' my ain country
oh I'll show you the red deer a-roamin',
On mountains where waves the tall pine
And as far as the bound of the red deer,
Ilk mountain and moorland is mine
Will ye gang tae the highlands, Leezie Lindsay,
Will ye gang tae the highlands wi' me
Will ye gang tae the highlands, Leezie Lindsay
My bride and my darling tae be.

Tae gang tae the hielands wi' you, sir,
I dinna ken how that would be,
For I cannot the road that I'm goin,
Nor can I the lad I'm goin' wi'.
A thousand claymores I can muster,
Ilk blade and its bearer the same
And when round the cheiftain they rally,
    The gallant MacDonald's my name.

The Highlands are so beautiful. I guess this is the only way I'll ever see them. I had always hoped to one day visit Scotland and Ireland but it's not to be. Very sad. This song is lovely. The melody is haunting, it stays in one's mind and lingers there. Thank you for this video. GB.

Are you too old to travel? Maybe it's not worth it. Maybe people think life is better somewhere else. Afterall people left Scotland for a reason.

@@emmalouie1663 I am VERY happy to be an American and very proud of her history of helping those in other lands when disaster strikes. I would have loved to see the beauty of Scotland as I love the stories of that fabled land. Finances have never allowed me to do the travel that I wished to do. People leave their homelands for many reasons but the land they were born to usually live in their hearts for their lifetime.

We sang this song in the SCA all the time. It is SO hard to keep a straight face when singing about "Lord Ronald MacDonald" for obvious reasons.

confused by the angry modern woman walking around with a fiberglass bow.... pretty sure that's not how life was back in the day. It's a pretty rendition of the song though. 1843 or older
