My parents had one in the late 80s. Being a stupid teenager, I didn’t appreciate it and was a little embarrassed to drive a 25 year old car. 30+ years later, I realize what grace and class these older cars had and honestly wish I had one now.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! When I was a kid this car with those taillights was my dream car. Can’t believe I never bought one. I thought they were too big when I started buying Valiants and Darts in the 70’s and 80’s.
While growing up, my parents had a 65 Dodge Polara convertible and a 67 Monaco wagon. My first car was a 68 Monaco 4dr sedan. So yes I’m familiar with them. All with 383s. Peppy around town but not a muscle car.
Very interesting, my mother owned a 66 Monaco w/the 4 barrel 383 and the buckets/console, but it wasn't a 500. Triple black, but the instrument panel was different ( in Canada?)in that it had a large square speedometer, not the twin bezel shown here. Incidentally, the rear was very comfortable and easily accessible. I learned to drive on this car, one of my absolute favourites, still!
The "triangle" is actual called a "FRATZOG" by Dodge, if you look at the hood ornament you can see it better. They needed a name for it and that's what they decided on. They used it on hub caps and other parts too. So if you do another older Dodge and it has this emblem, you'll know what to call it.
Cool & interesting! I recognized it as an old skool Dodge emblem from the 50s & 60s....but I didn't know it was called a Fratzog!! 🤣🤣 Very strange name! 😳😳
@@markhealey9409 In the Sixties Chrysler was involved with the " Space Race" and snuck little things like this on cars as a reminder. It's like Plymouth using the Mayflower ship as its symbol.
The thing about Chrysler Torsion bar cars is they didn't quite float over the bumps like Ford's or GM's. On the flipside of that though they didn't boat like them in the corners either.. I much rather give up a little ride comfort for better handling. The downside for me to the 1966 Monaco is one year later and you got the dual master cylinder. No whoosh sound and all your brakes gone save the parking brake. The other downside to me is the 383. I'd rather have the 440. Then if I had to choose between a 383 or the 318 I'd take the 318.
I once could've had a '66 Polara (which wasn't as high and mighty as this here fancy dancy Monaco) for a daily, but I wasn't brave enough to brave 10 mile per gallon fuel economy... in about 2015. But, I won't make the same mistake twice if I find one of these in my travels again! ^_^
Zack, As far as I know, UA-cam is still waiting for a Dodge MONACO vs Buick RIVIERA vs Chevrolet MONTE CARLO video 🤔 Of course , the most famous Monaco of all is the one driven by the Blues Brothers. 🤩
Had one of these in a 4-DR sedan with the 383 2bbl that I drove as a winter beater car in the late 70s/early 80s. Never had a speck of trouble with it. Finally had to junk it, as body was disintegrating around me. I did pull the engine and dropped it in an a farm truck, where it lived for several more years.
Zack my buddy I can not describe the amount of happiness and joy I get when ever you post a new review or a documentary, You have got such fascinating channel and a fabulous content, And I really appreciate the work and the effort you put into videos such as this one on the Dodge Monaco because no one does such reviews that include pretty much all era's of the Automobile from the 1920s until the current day and age In a very clear and cheerful way, Plus I want you to know that we really appreciate the daily content you are cranking out every single day so huge respect bro 🫡🫡🫡❤❤❤.
They were only to be used (the dashboard door cup holders) when the car is parked. I daresay most owners never used them. A stupid feature because we wasted time and thought on it before inevitably concluding that we probably will never use them. A busywork distraction that keeps simpleton’s’ brains engaged.
@@jw77019 I remember in my dad‘s on hot days back east when it was very humid the mist would pour out of those air conditioning vents on the dashboard. Sometimes it would even ice up the vents. That’s when you knew you were getting really cold air. When it got really super hot, everybody would always ask for the max ac.
I like how it's called the "Monaco" but it's nothing like the Ferrari that somebody who lived in the Monaco in the 1960's might drive (indeed it seems it would be a challenge to navigate the Dodge Monaco around the Casino hairpin)! The American, but coach built in Italy, Apollo GT seems more along those lines. 🙂
I had a 68 Monaco back in the early 80s . It was a 318 4 door . I really liked that old boat . It just sort of floated along . The steering one finger .
Damn! I was in the minorities when it came to this styling appreciation. I loved them. I seen a few in our neighborhood growing up but I never ever seen one with fender skirts. They really set off the car. Thank You!
You do a great job. Calling this car a personal luxury is more than a bit of hyperbole. The A/C if it came with the car is a major plus. Minus bucket seats, console, power windows ,seats ,brakes, steering and an AM/FM radio it is definitely not a personal luxury car. Even if it had these options it would Never challenge T birds, Rivieras, Lincoln suicide door cars, or even Avantis. I guess I can account this to your youth.
From the drivers seat I can’t help but see an elated bigweld from the movie robots, or like his corporate symbol of bigweld industries but with this huge goofy grin

This car is remarkably well preserved.
Always loved the styling of the Monaco, especially those taillights, rear end and grille. It was just so classy and distinctive looking.

My father had a 67 4dr with the vinyl top.383... MISS that car and its CLASSY design
Also that triangle was Dodge's logo back then and now for their electric cars
Our 1967 Chrysler with 383 used more gasoline than any car I ever had any experience with. About 8 mpg, 11 highway.

290 gross hp is approx 210 net. All hp (and torque) numbers were quoted gross until 1972. Nice clean styling for a change on that Dodge though.
Didn´t you notice the wheel with the 2 gauges and the claxon makes a smiling face??😄
I noticed!! 😁😁🤣🤣
Every car for 1966 was a work of art. My father had a 1966 Polara.
Ooooh two reviews in one day!
Heaven!
Day after Christmas!

Very cool car from when I was a kid.
😂😊
Wow , that's quite a long time.
The cupholder is on the back of the glove box door. It’s not as effective as the ones we have today, but don’t say it doesn’t have any cupholders!

Don’t forget the coin holder in the ashtray held quarters, nickels and dimes. The ac on these cars was excellent.

The triangle is the Dodge logo
I love these, what a beautiful car! The taillights are great.
Love this Monaco. It looks sinister. We had a 66 Polara in the early 70's. Love the dual pods in the dash.
Had the four-door version, same motor. Absolutely fantastic automobile.
I’ve got a 66 Monaco 500, I pulled it out of the woods where it was parked 20 years ago!
Zack, when you were filming the walk-around, someone looks to be stalking you. Watch your back!
Awesome car, great video!

Great shape for a '66! I love the front end, rear end,& interior, but I've never liked fender skirts on cars, partially hiding the rear wheels.
Dodge tried bringing back the Monaco name in the early 90s by rebadging the Eagle premier but it was very short-lived
Oh yes,i had forgotten about that! It was basically a French designed & engineered European Renault 25,but built in Canada.
Tgis might be the most bad ass 60's car ever. Such sick lines.
Please Come review my 94 Sunbird and my 97 Sunfire. Both coupes. I sent in a form ahaha. One day maybe.
AM radio with adjustable REVERBERATION!
I tell you, man. You feature some cool ass cars.!
The most (only?) interesting Monaco was the last generation.

Awesome car! I have had two Dodge Monacos but not this nice...oh and they we're from the 70s.
Notice the lack of a center console! Having a full front row bench seating is better for the environment and more economical and spacious!
On the Monaco and Polara that big block 383 put out 335 HP!
Incredible video. Thank you.
That's my Dads old car super low miles ,,I sure Miss my dad he was a MOPAR man 110%

clean and tidy
ris that the original paint? i bet it was originally the same color as the interior they did that alot back then...
Nice 😀
I pray you one day rrview a 77/78 monaco
Never thought id hear dodge and luxury... But big blocks is old dodges thing
if you look at the steering wheel, it looks like it's smiling with gauges as eyes
Well the steering wheel with the dash board arch inc instrument binnacle looks like a face to me
Did you move to nj whats up with all the nj cars
I did a big trip! I filmed 22 cars in 4 days, so lots of NJ content coming up but I still live in Chicago for the moment.
just look at that black beauty
imagine if it was a 4 speed.
hey owner do you track your gas mileage?
im driving a monaco....the plane will wait for us..lol
I have that car
Nice car. But what a jerk.
This makes no sense. What an unnecessary thing to say. Why would the car be a jerk?
1:34 American consumers are lucky they didn’t offer the Slant 6 at the time we will always go for V8
