Judy Garland was, is, and always will be, one of the greatest stars this world has ever known. Her humility, extraordinary wit and unique persona is so apparent in this clip. She also looks absolutely beautiful. God Bless Judy Garland always and forever! - Toni Morrell
Totally agreed! That is her song! I thought she was wonderful. She sang it from the heart. To think they were going to cut the song out of the movie. A class act! Bravo! Yours truly, magical Entertainer Vincent www.TorontoPartyMagician.com
Certain people can (and do) whine on about drugs and drink etc., but nothing can destroy the blazing talent that was and is Judy Garland, a lady who always tried to give of her best. And pretty much most of the time that is exactly what she delivered. She was a magnificent talent, far above the mediocre talents that we find ourselves surrounded by these days. Those of us who shared some time on this earth with her should count ourselves truly blessed.
Good post. The issues are always more than other people know about, very complicated.............Love her, enjoy her, appreciate her...........morn her.
@@litlgotti1003 If you don't have anything complimentary to say, then for heavens sake, please keep it to yourself, she worked so hard for all of us, nearly her entire lifetime, I don't mean to be impertinent or say anything out of turn, but if you haven't anything nice to say, that you wouldn't really say in front of that person, and wouldn't want said about you. Maybe keep it to yourself.
When you watch Wizard of Oz with a modern audience, man, you could hear a pin drop during Over the Rainbow. And the audience invariably bursts into spontaneous applause at the end. It's still one of the most iconic and mesmerizing moments on film.
One of a kind performer. She looked beautiful , but seemed uncomfortable or troubled. I imagine she was just being herself. So very sad her life ended so soon & tragically. Today's female performers can't even compare to you. RIP Judy. You were truly the best of all time!!
I was born in the late fall of 1978. I Love the Adorable, Extremely Talented, Legendary, Sincere, Very Intelligent, Very Pretty, Very Witty Judy Garland! Judy Garland is comfortable and relaxed in this clip! This is one of the best interviews and performances that Judy Garland gave in later years! Judy Garland is Over the Rainbow Immortal in Heaven and Immortal in all of her movies, radio broadcasts, recordings concerts, television show. television specials and guest appearances!
Judy was an amazing talent. It's so unfortunate that she was taken by the disease of addiction, but it was nobody's fault. People were just under educated about drugs. I'm honestly impressed that she lasted as long as she did, being so small while taking drugs in doses that are too much for even large people. It goes to show how truly strong she was. What a lady. Rest in peace, Judy.
@@avaloot1325 Sure they did. They had a special Smoking Manager tracking Judy's tobacco intake, making sure she smoked a full four packs, a wonderful idea for a singer, good for her voice, good for her appearance, especially her teeth.
Excellent..loved every second..sounds fantastic..she touches the heart strings of your heart , like no other voice can or ever will be able to do...love you Judy....
I've heard and watched this clip several times. I love it. Finally a pianist got it right. The key was adjusted. The original song was in Ab+ (way too high for Garland at this time of her life) It was dropped down a perfect fourth to Eb+. And she sounds BEAUTIFUL here. There is a change of key after "find me" to F+. Someone should have taken the time to change/lower orchestrations for her. If you've heard the Philadelphia version of the song "Insensitive", you can hear that it is a perfect range. (if only she had recorded a soft bossa nova album at the time) I was born a few days before the famous 1961 concert - I would give my eye teeth to have heard her live.
Robert Jennings The amazing thing is that she couldn't read a note of music, but if you gave her a key she could remain perfectly on pitch, even if the key modulated.
Ty for the theory lesson. Seemed the pianist couldn't hear her in the beginning. But what a powerful song. Wish I wrote it, but then again I wouldn't be here if I did!!!! RIP Judy. ONE OF THE BEST
Mike Douglas was regular viewing in our house, and for just the reason you see here. He had the most interesting guests and was always so respectful of them. I suspect that little interpolation was her way of thanking him for that.
This was a stellar few minutes in the history of talk show television. Very endearing and touching, especially in view of how close she was to the end of her earthly journey.
Whenever Judy Sang OTR, she sang it as if her heart was breaking. And no matter how many ppl were in her audience, They became so silent that u could literally hear a pin drop. Judy really believed in those lyrics and she never spoffed it; that's why so many people, including myself, cringe when we hear someone else sing this song. I've said this a few times before, When Judy sang OTR it was always live. She never lip synced to it even if her voice wasnt up to par, she always sang it perfectly.
Mike seemed a bit nervous asking her to sing Over the Rainbow because she rarely sang it on TV and saved it for her concerts. I’m so glad that she agreed To sing it because it was the last time on tv that she sang her signature song!
I just read something the other night that in 1964 when Judy traveled to Australia they would not allow her to bring her medications into the country. Someone got her medications while she was there apparently different ones than she normally took. From Australia she went to Hong Kong and while there she had an overdose and they took her to the hospital and when the pumped her stomach they saved her life but damaged her vocal chords in the process. Very sad.
She died in 1969, so sad. I was born in 1964. I loved seeing the set looking all "flower power" and avocado green. Good times... I grew up watching The Wizard Of Oz. I loved it.
thank you Judy Garland for your life....Wizard of Oz is an American icon for entertainment......Your life struggles were difficult and I am so lucky you lived 49 years.....thanks...jeff
Judy Garland passed away from an accidental drug overdose on June 22, 1969, in England, just 12 days after her 47th birthday! Judy Garland passed away and went Over the Rainbow at 47, not 49!
She looks like she has all the wonder of a child when she sings "Over the Rainbow...." What a beautiful creature she was. Absolutely exquisite. Rest well, dear lady.
Listen to her unique phrasing. Even at less than peak form, it never occurred to her to sing this song, in the usual way most people would would expect her to sing it.
Well it's almost mother's Day into watch. This beautiful lady becomes so much more than she ever thought. She was rainbow beautiful rainbow. She created the most iconic song that we will resonate for the rest of our lives. She was beautiful. She was never told how beautiful her singing was beyond the rainbows in her life. Hard as it was. She made it better for the rest of us. Happy mother's Day! Judy❤
I love this. Judy doesn't have to prove anything to anyone. I love this version. Nice and stripped down for the woman who can still break hearts when singing this song, 50 years later.
I LOVE this. This was the first time I saw the "adult Garland", in the summer of 1968 I was eight years old. She was rested when this was shot and in great form and voice for 1968. Thank you for posting this.
Her face is a little puffy because of withdrawal. She was trying once again to kick the pills. Her voice is strong and that quick wit is still very much intact. I'll take Judy Garland in this condition over Beyonce or Gaga (or anyone else you want to name) any day.
Puffiness, or bloating, is a sign of large doses of sodium being taken faster than the kidneys can flush them out, and seconal causes this type of bloating. I know she tried to stop in 68, but she had many slip-ups.
She owns this song and can sing it any way or how she wants, this song is Judy Garland that I feel so much pain for what Hollywood did to her....rest in peace Francis Gum aka Judy Garland rip. Never forgotten....
Her voice was magic , even after all the challenges of substance abuse, she had that God given gift of music and a voice that lit up a room. The world lost her way too soon.
Mike Douglas was told not to ask her to sing that song. That song always meant a lot to her and at this point, made her quite emotional. You could tell by her stalling that she was reluctant to sing it. In a similar vein, Letterman was told not to ask Sonny and Cher to reprise "I've Got You Babe." Both were reluctant to sing because they hadn't sung together for 10 years and didn't want to embarrass themselves. They both knew that Letterman might try to "con" them into singing, and of course they did. Cher said that the song just brought back memories and for both, it was emotional.
Judy Garland is very comfortable and happy singing Over the Rainbow, and I am glad she did! Over the Rainbow is an Academy Award Winning, Beautiful, Beloved, Brilliant, Classic, Delightful, Excellent, Fantastic, Grand, Iconic, Happy, Hopeful, Outstanding, Perfect, Timeless, Uplifting, Wonderful, song that truly belongs only to Judy Garland! She's in relatively good voice for the time here, and that piano accompaniment was in just the right key for her matured voice. By far one of the better performances she (or anyone else) did of this marvelous song. It's a shame we lost her so young. Were it not for the drugs, she might even be around today.
So true brother ,so true ! Though I was born in early seventies ,from my earliest memories of music and musicals Judy has left an everlasting imprint on my life !!!
Shane de Leon Hollywood does that to people... all the abuse she suffered on and off set... i'm not surprised she turned to the drugs and alcohol. it's a shame we lost her so young indeed.
The greatest female vocalist ever! She is toward the end of her life and her voice is so amazing when she sings OTR. The audience that day really was lucky because Judy rarely sang this song on TV. U can hear them clap wildly once she starts to sing the song

I love how Judy reacted to Mickey Rooney and said proudly, "My Pal" then told us who else is in the picture and she calls her self a "broad" She is so funny..
Imagine her career on a steady diet of exercise, good diet, and a happy home life and a real happiness inside. She did all of the things she did not at her very best and there was still no one within a million miles of her.

Omg when she said"I think i've made it over the rainbow"i almost cried!
It made me tear when she said "I think I've finally gotten over the rainbow."
Her singing performances and films were legend, but "Wizard Of Oz" made her eternal. :-)
Michael Barnhart I know right
Very true but her incredible stage presence and possessing the greatest voice in history goes far beyond Oz. 👍❤️
You made me cry lol but yee

tears pouring down my face....That voice, Over the Rainbow, it's her. She's still with us and always will be.
Indeed…Always!
Why do people think she sounded bad here? I think she's in good voice.

I think the alcohol from the night before you can still hear
It wasn't her best performance, but whatever, she's not a robot.
Perhaps they still hear the younger Judy in their head and compare?🤷 Beautiful woman
