Drill holes 1/16" every 2 inches around the bottom of the bucket... helps vent heat, and let the smell move more.

As a plumber Ive seen pvc get very brittle from sun exposure...
I love that idea.. I would recommend painting to get a longer life. Those bucket only last a year with direct sunlight( well I love in Florida so may very).. awesome idea, thanks

glad you enjoyed the video. I have used it and got many swarms. I use them around my Apiary to keep bees from leaving the apiary and to help control bees from getting into other peoples bee yards.
many others have used this style, with different tops... like a NUC box or 8 frame hive.

This is very clever. I love the ingenuity of this invention. It can be moved to any height. which would be needed for capturing bees in the higher trees. here in Minnesota that would definitely be an issue. I had to get past the first five minutes before you really had me. Love it. Thank you for the post.

Do you let them establish in there before you move back in a box?
No, As I am working bees every week, as i see bees in the bucket,,, I see what hive is moved.. if no hive is moved... free bees.. If hive has moved, I work with the swarm and hive that they came from.

The Taranov board is an ingenious system used to separate bees that are going to swarm from bees that will stay in the parent hive or have swarmed and need to move out new queen and her attendants to replace the old queen that has left. . Once separated, the swarming bees and old queen can be placed in a new hive while the old colony is left to raise a new queen, Or the queen and bees that stayed with the hive can be placed in a new hive like they just started out and the old colony is replaced in the hive. The system was invented in 1947 by G. F.
can white color Bucket work Cause I hate HD Buckets, I know its Darker for Sun But...

getting 11 swarms
1/2 holes in the bucket with secret can be added to allow air in to keep the ones cool
you should be checking traps every 3days.
white buckets work fine
Michael Jordan ty, i didn't understand u wrote secret... but anyway i will try i have metal pole in cemented bucket already, i caught my last one by putting lemon grass in Hive and place it on my Roof
Vicusa1 - I wondered what he meant by "secret" too. I learned that white isn't good because it lets in too much light. Someone else I saw had painted theirs a darker color that blended in with the trees. If it's under the tree branches it shouldn't get that hot in the shade.
Wrap the bucket with foil tape and then put ventilation holes with screen 😎
What about ventilation? Would a 1 1/2" Hole near the bottom covered from the inside with #8 hardware provide ventilation and a viewing port? I'll try one out this Spring and let you know how it works in Texas.
in warmer places you can drill holes low by the base in the bucket and cover with screen. I have even seen a guy in TX make an old umbrella as a top over it so it had shade.

Do you happen to know of any lures that can be used for bumble bees. I know it must exists but I cant seem to find any information on it. the bumble bee in Minnesota, or at least some of the species here are endangered. There are a few in my yard and in a friend's yard, and I wanted to capture them as well. I know they are attracted to color but I am thinking there has to be something out there, like a bumble bee type of lemongrass type of something that would work. Any clues? at a loss. signed ..., save a bumblebee save the world.

asparuh kalasnikov you can use any bucket you want. you can even not use a bucket and add a NUC box or a cardboard swarm trap.
the idea is the easy tellascopeing pole that gets you in the air with ropes or ladders.
don't forget that bees prefer darker places for thier hives. the more sun that comes in the more heat will enter into the hives. they naturally will choose dark places. Perhaps if you sprayed the outside of a sanded white bucket will work for you.
This year i use cardboard trap but unfortunately is bad year and no swarming more luck next one

Nice no ladder trap idea. Certain amount of weight and expense for each lure vs light ladder and a hook....
Could bolt on coroplast shade baffle to the south side to help with any cooling needs....
At www.UrbanBeesandGardens.org I'm using boxes of diff sizes to accommodate frames to simplify transfer from lure box to hive.

I tried bucket traps before, they suck. Much better to use a box with frames for easy transfer and negate the need to check the trap so often. If you catch a big swarm and wait several days to check or transfer your doing a cut out on a bucket. Also there's a real danger of bees overheating and dying or absconding. Height doesn't give any real advantage. I caught 9 swarms last year in water meters buried in the ground, the bees don't care.
