It hasn't been like that for years and it's indeed a "noble game": People with criminal records can't partecipate in it anymore, if you don't like it, don't watch it.
This sport is the only present relic of what rugby historically looked like. It even pre dates the earliest form of rugby where the aim was to move a ball from one side of town to the other. Imagine this being played in the streets between hundreds of people.

There are and have been other games like this. Lots of them, but this is tremendous. Never been to Florence at the righttime, so far.
