@mechbgum no more uninspired than Doom 3, which was essentially a tech demo. This plays better than Doom 3 and yet no one remembers it compared to Doom 3.
@Phobos Anomaly doom 3 might've been not good as a doom game, but at least it tried to do something and managed that mildly decently, quake 4 has the blandest atmosphere and gameplay, it's slow as fuck, if it was still a good game even if not a good quake, I'd give credits for that, but it's not a good game, I won't say it's horrible... any game with a black hole gun has got something, but unfortunately that doesn't save the game in the slightest, perhaps you've enjoyed that back in the day as a 13 year old or something, but give it a try now. Ps: I hate doom 3 too, but it has merits, unlike quake 4.
@mechbgum you're cutting this game too much slack, I agree it's not total garbage, but apologizing mediocrity is why we get such games in the first place, quake 1 and 2 has amazing atmosphere and gameplay that holds up today, and I'm not saying this from nostalgia, I first played these games in 2017 and I had a blast, not with quake 4 though, I would give quake 4 a 4 out of 10.
@@MattleWolff Look, I agree with both of you. I don't think Quake 4 is a great game, and I've never felt it was. It was OK at best, and much better FPS games came out then, including FEAR and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, both excellent games. But I've always compared Q4 with D3...they use the same engine with the same limitations, but Q4 managed to be faster (if still slow), and managed to have a more arcade-y feel than D3. Even if compared to the previous games, it was slow. I had much more fun with Q4 than D3. D3 was good for a first-playthrough horror game, but lost all its effect after that for me. In contrast, I can still go back and enjoy Q4. It's also because I've never cared for Quake multiplayer, personally, I always played it for the single player experience, and I felt id left out a huge part of their player base with Q3.

Man, I wish I had enjoyed Quake 4 as much as everyone else here. I played it on 360, and I was so excited to get it because I loved the premise and had fond memories of Quake 2. But I found it bland/ugly visually, both technically and in it's design aesthetic. The tougher enemies were overly frustrating to fight and the levels had become a slog by the end of the game. Story was pretty much what I expected, but none of the other elements came together in a satisfying way for me. Once I beat the game I never wanted to pick it up again. At this point, I'd love to see Id revisit the bizzare world of the original Quake , similar to whats been done with the awesome reboots of Doom and Wolfenstein.
@Jotaro97 I agree about Quake 2. I thought it was cool as hell 20 years ago, but it is not especially good-looking now. But if you like Quake 4 on PC, that's fine. I just don't like it's design aesthetic at all. Personal taste.
Great video! I have a suggestion. Try telling the viewer the information, instead of just reading it to them. You read a bit fast and monotone at times, which made it a bit hard to follow. The quality of the video and content is very good, keep it up!
I have always said in "recent years", even some of the most medicore and even lesser titles the 2000s are better than most of today's modern shooters. Q4 was simply released at a time when there was already an overwhelming number of good games being released that it felt bad in comparison. The slow movement speed of the first half of the game did not help at all.
Tell you what, on 360 it looks like shit but the here with the mods it looks impeccable. I've always said this (and Prey) are the games Doom 3 should have been.
Quake 4 basically has three great flaws that keeps me from loving it, the story and such was great, I liked the design of it and the shooting felt good, but then there are those flaws. You walk really slow, I know that's not so different from modern shooters but this is a quake game, a series where you run at the speed of sound in all the other games. The vehicles just feel wrong, for example, the tank can strafe… what? Also, it has a bit of call of duty syndrome in that you'll often be stopped from progressing by some character that talks to you while blocking a door or similar, something you can't skip.
I've always felt this game got totally overlooked.

Great game... great review... great video 👍
Quake deserves a Reboot with the same quality as the 2016 Doom reboot.
I like this game. I do not think it deserves the hate a lot of people tend to give it
Except the 360 version. The framerate in that version is trash
My biggest disappointment with this game was that there was no BFG 10K.
You could use fucking mechs and tanks, this game is amazing
I bought and tried playing this but stopped partly cuz engine looks like trash...it look pretty great here though I'll have to try these mods thx :D
Great video!
I have a suggestion. Try telling the viewer the information, instead of just reading it to them. You read a bit fast and monotone at times, which made it a bit hard to follow.
The quality of the video and content is very good, keep it up!
Does anyone else think this 13-year-old game features *better* dynamic lighting and shadows than games we see today?
I have always said in "recent years", even some of the most medicore and even lesser titles the 2000s are better than most of today's modern shooters. Q4 was simply released at a time when there was already an overwhelming number of good games being released that it felt bad in comparison. The slow movement speed of the first half of the game did not help at all.
Is presentation the only reason why you think it isn't Quake?
I've heard a lot of people say that Quake 4 is the low point of the series.
This video makes me wanna play it... Few seconds later I remember I played it... and I was bored and.... this isnt Quake...
16:16 What the hell :))
The grenade was too much for him, I guess. Lol.
quake 4 look great
Tell you what, on 360 it looks like shit but the here with the mods it looks impeccable. I've always said this (and Prey) are the games Doom 3 should have been.
new sub
I loved this game except the hovercraft
Quake 4 is much better than Doom 3,even they`re on the same engine.
I just fucking love this game....but steam port is a mess
Quake 4 basically has three great flaws that keeps me from loving it, the story and such was great, I liked the design of it and the shooting felt good, but then there are those flaws. You walk really slow, I know that's not so different from modern shooters but this is a quake game, a series where you run at the speed of sound in all the other games. The vehicles just feel wrong, for example, the tank can strafe… what? Also, it has a bit of call of duty syndrome in that you'll often be stopped from progressing by some character that talks to you while blocking a door or similar, something you can't skip.
@Jotaro97 Excuses for trash doesnt make it any less trash.
Great game!
