  • “You must stay between him and me always. Always!” Love-struck Consuelo Croyden (Norma Shearer) can’t trust herself around dashing Tony Barling (George Sanders). So she hires songwriter Terry Trindale (Robert Taylor), who’s just as nuts about her as she is about Tony, to pose as her beau - and step in when Tony’s charms make Consuelo forget she’s a lady. In Her Cardboard Lover, three screen greats play a farcical game of he-loves-and-she-loves, complete with ruses, slapped faces, fisticuffs and Terry donning Consuelo’s satin PJs, but it all comes romantically right at the end. With this frothy comedy, Norma Shearer bid adieu to the movies after 62 films, a Best Actress Academy Award® (for 1930s The Divorcee) and over a decade as the reigning queen of the MGM lot. She surrounded herself with top talent for her farewell: her two leading men and director George Cukor, who helmed Shearer’s The Women three years previously.

It disappoints me to hear people drag this film and We Were Dancing, saying that it’s what caused Norma’s career to end.
The truth is she got married and her priorities changed. She’d been through so much sorrow with the loss of her first husband and worked for so long, and now she made the conscious decision to be a good wife to her new husband and a good mother to her children. She had played so many wonderful dramatic roles and now when she knew the end of her career was in sight she opted for the more comedic options before her and i love them.
I wish people would just accept the way she chose to live her life and enjoy the wonderful films she was able to give us.

I love this movie Norma and Robert Taylor play well off each other Norma plays the confused sophisticate quite charmingly. If I get overwhelmed at my work and I bring it home I watch this film and it's very relaxing

Norma had only herself to blame for making this film. It might not seem too bad today but in 1942 it was not what the public wanted. Norma was only interested in making light comedies rather than the type of films that were more suitable for her age. This is a shame because she could have brought so much to roles like “Mrs Miniver”.

@@elchoya8770 she still had some films in her. Even after she left MGM, Jack Warner tried to sign her to do Now, Voyager and Bette Davis personally requested her as her co-star in Old Acquaintance.

I watched this movie and didn't understand all the drag down about it which I read earlier. It made me laugh so many times and Robert Taylor is really a comedian here. Yes, it doesn't have commotion. It's nearly shot in a single setting. The only problem is that Norma Shearer's rapid acting doesn't overlap with the slower pace of the movie. Maybe some amateur intelligentsia would think I have low standards for enjoying it, but I'm someone who couldn't bear to watch the overrated, definitely unfunny nonsense called "Vivacious Lady".

To think that Norma Shearer turned down Mrs. Miniver to do this piece of trash. Norma's movie career tanked after this movie was released and Norma never made another movie again. She had in release at about the same time another movie called We Were Dancing which also tanked. Two flop pictures back to back pretty much sealed Norma Shearer's fate. She was never heard from again.

Its an MGM made movie and Tyrone Power is part of 20th century fox. Meanwhile, Robert Taylor was one of the top stars in MGM during that era just second to Gable. Stop the hate coz of his political views
