Mortal Kombat arcade Reptile secret boss fight

- Mortal Kombat was the first versus-fighting game to feature a secret character called Reptile, the idea was so popular that it has spread to many other fighting games.
You could only face him in one special way: if there are silhouettes gliding past the moon at the Pit stage (this will occur every 6th game) player had to achieve a double flawless victory, never press block, and execute a fatality to face off against the mysterious green ninja.
The popularity of this mysterious character allowed Reptile to return in Mortal Kombat II with his own moveset and fatalities.
REPTILE, this was THE easter egg that ruled all arcades! The green ninja was a myth 'til you saw it for yourself. Kids describing to other kids how Reptile appears was too good to be true. Eventually everybody got to see him but when it was fresh you needed to be around people who were good at the game to see it. I was young and intimidated by this game 'cause I only saw 'grown ups' at the machine. I saved a lot of quarters spectating. Green became my favorite color after this.
greens my favourite colour too, and i loved this game. dont know if its related.
Forget Reptile... SANTA CLAUS!
***** Santa Claus is a part of the Easter egg. You see him fly past the moon in the second round of the fight in the Pit stage...
Nearly shat myself when I saw scorpions fatality for the first time. Everything was cool about this game. Sub zero and scorpion especially and the sounds
Great memories bro.
I used to spend every Friday at a local pizzareia that had an MK cabinet, and a Willow cabinet, of all things. I was only 12 or 13 then, but already the neighborhood hero. You know how you used to play a game so much we got crazy good at that one game? MK was that for me, I could coast and always beat the last boss, mostly with Flawless victories. One day I got the flawless victory with sub zero on the pit, and all of a sudden reptile drops us down. Mad crowd gathers, people calling to each other and coming in from the outside, maybe 15-20 people but it felt like a million. I lost the first round, my hands were shaking from the nerves of all the attention, but I was good at MK back then and I just forgot the crowd by the second round, locked in with that 12 year old single minded obsession. I start to jump around and stuff, everyone cheering me on, 20 year old guys smoking cigarettes and shit. I get the second round. Store owner literally asks what's going on? Everyone is hype now, wants me to win so bad, what's going to happen if I win? World peace? Fame and fortune? Remember, I had no clue how I got to Reptile at that point, this is 1992 or 1993. I wasn't going to find him again. I HAD to win. I barely win the third, and now I'm getting props, mad props from everyone. Then its like here is 10 million points. Great, thx. Nonetheless, to this day people around the neighborhood will mention this occurrence once in a while when we get together.
Nice.
ChucklesMcChuckleson it would of been funny if someone slipped in a quarter and whooped your ass and ruined your moment. Just playing man nice
chris herrera I always like hearing other people's nostalgic video game stories.
redlol123 me too I was just playing I had a similar experience with street fighter and a kid no one could beat and I got lucky and beat him
chris herrera Sounds like you're an arcade legend where you come from.
Reptile - The Original secret fighting game kharacter.
Ken
If only Ermac existed in Mk1. That would've been way cooler!
Twice as fast as Reptile with Johnny Cage's shadow kick, green laser, and Scorpion's spear throw and teleport.
It sucks in mk 9 he is slow
He was the Killer Kombat Kharacter. Changed my life for the better, I've hated black people ever since.
@@randaldominguez4139 Well Ermac sort of existed in MK1. He was a glitched character.
Radionatix Ermac never existed in MK1. There was no way to fight him because he DID NOT EXIST.
If he did, don’t you think there would be some legitimate footage floating around UA-cam by now, along with a method on how to fight him?
I was addicted to these games as a kid. Now 34,I think of mortal kombat as a true classic.
Jake I grew up on MK3 in the 90s and 2000s. I’m 26 so I grew up into the new culture of gaming but these MK games are to fighting what Goldeneye is to first person shooters.
Try mortal Kombat defenders of the earth
*klassic
Fun fact: During when Reptile was a secret fight in MK1, he made nearly all the fans of MK1 love him. Reptile was also the first ever secret character in the history of all fighting games. In Mortal Kombat's 1995 movie, In Liu Kang vs. Reptile, Reptile had the upper hand for a short amount of time, while Shang Tsung only had the upper hand against Liu Kang for a VERY short amount of time. Which means, Reptile is stronger than Shang Tsung, as he was Shang's bodyguard. In Reptile's MK2 ending, this dude literally killed both SHAO KAHN AND SHANG TSUNG! That's something Raiden or Liu Kang would BARELY do. However, MK4 nerfed the hell out of Reptile. In his MK4 ending, he gets killed by Shinnok after asking Quan Chi to send him to the time before his race was destroyed. And after MK4, this dude literally continued getting nerfed until not even appearing in MK11. After literally killing both Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung in the same time, he was begging to his knees at freaking Quan Chi. The MK2 Reptile would kill Quan Chi just as easily as he killed Shao and Shang. And in the latest Mortal Kombat 2021 movie, Reptile got killed by literally KANO. I don't know what inspired the MK crew to literally nerf the freaking hell out of this ninja. In fact, in his MK5 ending, Reptile got literally replaced by Onaga (Which is the Dragon King, by the way.) Also, Reptile did not care about being on top of the world, he only cared about his race being resurrected which is also the reason why he is fighting in the first place.
An interesting parallel that can be drawn from this is that in the game everyone can face Reptile, except Liu Kang, as his Fatality throws the opponent into the pit, automatically nullifying the presence of the reptilian ninja. In the 95 movie, Liu Kang is the only one to face Reptile. I like to imagine that this was a common thing decided between the producers and the film director about this in the game.
I always wondered why it was like that. Thanks, AT Production.
Desculpa mas dá sim amigo pra enfrentar ele de Liu Kang, eu mesmo já fiz e tá aqui no meu canal

I did this accidentally one time on my SNES. I remember waking up my sister just to show her, "look I'm fighting Reptile!" I just thought of it now; good nostalgia. Another time, my Sonic & Knuckles glitched, and he was able to walk on the celling. I left the system running for a day or two straight.
I got to reptile on accident too on my Genesis. I didn't beat him but I think I fought him twice. Completely by chance. Didn't even know how to make it happen.
@@darklordojeda i had no idea
@@darklordojeda that's because the pit stage with flying silhouettes are set default, which makes it easier to find reptile. all you have to do is to get a flawless victory, never press block, and finish your opponent with a fatality. that's what you did right?
I will never get over how cool that stage is. They need to make violent looking stages like that again.
I remember getting Reptile only once back in the arcade days. Nobody really knew how to unlock him because there was no Internet and we all thought you had to flawless victory and fatality everyone up until the pit level.
Suffice to say when I did finally get to him he smashed me very quickly.
The way you got to fight reptile was, when you were on the pit level, if there were objects flying across the moon, you could do a double flawless victory and the upper cut fatality.
That's why it was so hard to find reptile, you had to rely on a random chance of the witch flying across the moon while on the pit stage before you could even attempt to unlock the encounter.
So basically reptile was just a hybrid of Sub-Zero & Scorpion in the first game, never knew that
+magnum1165
Which makes sense, seeing as green is a mixture of yellow and blue. They made him his own unique character later on, but it makes a lot of sense when you look at it that way.
@Stefano Pavone Mk2 was already out at the time of the movie.
Reptile, as he is, maxed out the memory in the game. The creators decided prior that they wanted to have as much content as could be possibly allowed. Then after the first MK there was an upgrade to the arcade cab allowing mk2 to have a lot more characters, higher grade music, ect.
@@Papagiorgio153 as he turns into Reptile you can hear it say "Reptile" this was taken straight from MK2 when Shao Kahn says it
Blood and Brutality Records why didn’t they put more characters into the first MK game on consoles then?
love that little jingle when you beat reptile
Some of the things that fly in front of the moon: a blimp, a witch, Peter Pan and the kids who followed him, a kite, a UFO, and Santa Claus.
It would've been cooler if they show a green ninja flying across the moon, indicating that you found the secret.
***** he does now
Bloodreign1 they missed there big opportunity to put ET
I remember the IF I and Santa Claus...but was Peter pan actually one of them??😂
Once a Thing. Oh my god i just got that reference
I remember learning about how to get to reptile when I was real young and I use to frequent this local comic book store and try everyday after school, but I thought if I.beat him I would 500,000 dollars if I did I forget the exact amount but it was actually points and I remember after finally beating him I went to the owner of the comic store and asked him how I collect my money, he laughed so hard and I was So sad I was going to by a mk arcade cabinet with my winnings. When I think back I laugh my ass off. But I do remember being so sad.

3:53 Santa in the moon!
What would happen if you got a double flawless + fatality on Reptile, would Ermac show up?
Ermac didn't appear until later MK games. All you get for beating Reptile here is 10 million points
No, you just get extra points.
No you fight a weird shadow guy. at least on the sega version that is
SickBoy666100 is it noob is there like a video on UA-cam if there is please send me a link
Reptile 2 would drop!!
I freakin' love hidden secrets in games like this. All the rumors and stuff, it's just so cool to actually see it
Oh, man... That's the golden times of the arcade, back in the early 90's. I remember this games (among others) somewhere around the 94. It was a great time.
I don't know in the U.S., other countries or even in other brazillian states, but here in my city, it was forbidden the presence of kids under 12 without an adult. It really pissed me off!! In 1994, I was 10 and I had to lie about my real age (and fortunatelly the owner believed me without any document), otherwise, I could be there only in 1996.
The newer generation of gamers will never understand how flat out awesome this was when it happened. Thje entire arcade stopped to wacth whenever someone managed to pull this off.
Mister RON! I can only Imagine bro. I was born In 1990 but I've never had the priveledge to see this firsthand.
@@oliverx7342 really never?
3:16 that scream! Out of all MK's, I think this one had the best sounds. They are just so bone-chillingly good!
If I remember correctly, the shadows that could fly past the moon are:
A Blimp
a Kite
a Rocket
a Witch
a UFO
a Cow
Santa Claus
And (strangely) Peter Pan and the Neverland Kids
I always get Santa, no matter what.
cyrax Strangely enough, I've only ever seen the Kite.
I've seen the kite, rocket, witch, Santa and Peter Pan. Didn't even know about the others haha.
Indrid no, only a rocket a witch santa claus and something else appear no peter pan and blimps and ufos
I've only seen the rocket lol
After that he became a real playable character in MK2!
Imagine the first guy who discovered this existed and when he told his friends they told him that he was full of shit.
I remember this... got lucky at the arcade once and got there, the structures in the moon giving it away... then got beaten ugly and lost the money...
reptile Is a mix of scorpion and sub-zero mind blown
Yep
+Alma Trujillo Well...yellow and blue make green, after all.
Raiden:Aie ba ba yeh, johnny's in the car
I also here "I'm in Odeon''
Wow.
This video just brought back SO MANY memories. The nostalgia is REAL here.
Remember when these graphics were "so new" and "so good"? 🤣
4:01 Papa noel / Santa claus Easter Egg in the moon . But Goku Win
10 000 000 points for beating him!!!!????
joel persall You have to perform a fatality on him to receive those points.
Reptile is my favorite mortal kombat character...
I never noticed the Santa clause flying in the background of MKI 3:53
LOL
ME TOO, AFTER ALL THESE MANY YEARS LOL
Santa Claus in MK11
Ah, the memories..
On November 1992, while preparing an upgrade to fix several bugs, Ed Boon shut himself in his office for a weekend and added the secret character Reptile all by himself. However, no indication was ever given of his existence. It wasn't until a later revision of the game...Which added Reptile popping up before matches to give clues of his existence in the game
Reptile's name is Scorpion?? o.O
Hades Life They didn't what to call him so I guessed they waited for the fans to name him. (I am guessing only)
***** Yeah I guess you were right.
***** There was also a hint that said "I am Reptile, find me!" so it was likely just a bug. They fixed it in the snes version
oh okay thnx ,man..
DinoRanger 1259 it said reptile after he beat him were you paying attention -.-
When I was a kid and played the game for the first time, I thought that the dragon logo in the select screen was a place holder for reptile and I was excited when I was fighting I think it was kano when he appeared with the clue. I was like "mommy look!!! A secret character, I think that the dragon logo in the select screen is a place holder, when I figure out how to unlock him, then reptile will become available."
To this day I try and fight him whenever I can with my "MORTAL KOMBAT TV game." When I met him when I was a kid, I'm 21 now, its when I knew he would become my favorite character. I'm sorry scorpion and sub zero, but reptile is my #1!!! For life. MORTAL KOMBAT IS THE MOTHER OF ALL FIGHTING GAMES AND A LEGEND, ALSO BECAUSE IT WAS THE FIRST FIGHTING GAME WITH A SECRET CHARACTER!!!
Oh, the good old days. My mom knew I was playing a violent game but she knew i knew the difference between reality and fantasy. Go reptile!!!
Good work man.
You are a good player!
Anyone else notice Santa fly past the moon at 4:00 ? That means Santa is MK Canon. That would actually be a cool extra character lol. His weapon would be claws,Santa Claws!
Oh the memories. Hanging out at the arcade all day. I had some good runs when I would stay on for a couple hours straight. I had mastered everybody, but if I really needed to win Sub Zero was my guy.
Mortal Kombat 1 really is so primitive. The super simple jump kick, grab, uppercut combo took down like 90% of the special bosses health. Really crazy how far we've come.
how are the other characters still screaming after there dead lol scorpion flames you to bones and you still screaming lol
Gcm Productions it’s their souls in the depths of hell , cmon dude!
Same way Cage could punch three heads off one person.
hey this game was from 1990 no complaining

To appear
Reptile is Santa Claus in disguise....i guess
Very cool video. I just read online about finding this secret reptile. I've always been amazed and curious about MK.
I grew up with Street Fighter 2 so when MK came out, I tried it but had a very hard time with it, so I became of the MK haters that refused to play it. years later, I recognize the appeal of MK. Even recently i got the game for my playstation and still can't play it. I give this guy a lot of credit as it takes skill that I don't have to get to where he got.
I remember getting this right at the arcade when I was about 14. Epic!!!
I found him at home on my old gaming system and he scared the shit out of me lol. And I love how Ed Boone's head is in the pit lol
4:03 ...did I went krazy or did I saw F*CKING SANTA CLAUS???
Yea lol a witch and Santa pass by the moon sometimes on the Pit map lol
*go *crazy *see
+metalblurx Shadows on the moon is a requirement for Reptile appearance.
+boumbh I fought Reptile in this game before and I didn't need shadows flying over the moon. I guess this is not one of the requirements on the snes version because that's the version I was playing.
now you saw him
The very first video game I was ever introduced to as a 7 year old & the very first introduction to a "Secret Character" in history & in video game history because I didn't even know what a "secret character" was till I played this game in 1994 & I believe this is the very first true "secret character" also so Reptile is so legendary for that reason alone!!!!! I kinda wish they never brought him back in any of the sequel games or movies because of the particular reason alone!!!! I did think he was shown perfectly in the original MK film as well because nobody expected him to pop up in that film at least as a actual battle/fight/match/ninja form so he will always be the he greatest most legendary"secret character" that will ever exist in human history ❤
This also has to be the hardest "secret character" to unlock 🔓 in video game history also!!!!
5:23 Note How he actually got 10M. A bug makes it so that only player 1 get's 2M, meaning only Player 2 Can get the full 10M Point's.
holy crap.. thank you so much. This was the first PC game I ever played, and now I finally got to him! I'd heard rumours that it just didn't work on the PC version...
Still lost, but hey, at least I know how to get there now :)
Look at the moon in the background at 3:53.
Samurai Momo Ho Ho Ho!
Samurai Momo Santa be getting dem front row seats to this fight....
Randy Gutierrez that far away? nah i dont think so
A rocket passed first then santa, never noticed before
Samurai Momo Reptile is Santa Claus
@CorreaLang They are going to release this on PSN this summer. This game, along with MK 2 and Ultimate MK 3. And it will come into one package that will cost only ten bucks! In HD as well!
We do it one time as a kid you freak out nobody listens.
Kind of a shame that this doesn't have the iconic Reptile theme as well as the poison ability. Still, it's a pretty cool Easter egg. I've been playing MK1 on GOG lately and I might try and get this fight.
Is it tru that the heads in the background are the creators of MK
Zombie Slayer666 yes, the easter egg of mortal kombat staffs
Ohhhhh the memories... am i the only one who’s soul almost cries because of how bad we wish there was time machine ...
This is the result of scorpion and subzero using the portara earrings.
Yellow and blue DOES make green...THIS IS THE ULTIMATE FUSION!
Dre The Kidd Omg never noticed that! Nice one dude!
the sound effects makes me feel nostalgic, and I wasn't even alive when this game came out. I'm 16
Couldn't have imagined the excitement and intrigue of seeing this in the arcade during the early 90's.
i like how scorpion alternates between Come Here, and Get Over Here, choose one damnit....but the arcade had the best sounds, the scream when Scorpion finshes them sounds sweet as
3:52 In the fight with Liu Kang at the Pitt stage you can see Santa's sleigh including the reindeer fly across the moon in the background.
No shit its required to get reptile dumbass
@@joeabosssands2481 shut the fuck up you little bitch.

Love that voice and pronouncing ! And old music
Alla Shishalova its better than the mk11 announcer
Ed boon is the announcer
And from what I remember, you cannot reach Reptile if you block. So this must be fake.
i believe the no blocking thing is for that fight specifically, (unless i missed him blocking)
@@Meepy27 You are correct. You can't use the block button(except in later revisions, when it was allowed for fatalities only, thereby allowing Sonya to fight Reptile.)

Fun fact: they literally just coloured in green Scorpion and glitches prove that’s all they did for the model coz if you manage to replace that character slot with another with a hack it will turn them with weird glitchy green.
Please make more videos like these thank you my good friend 💯💖👏
Best fighting game announcer ever.
@MCMXLVIII I just meant in general. Actually, in some of the later ROM versions, you could use the block button in a fatality and still fight Reptile (e.g. Sonya's fatality).
This was before he was first officially playable in MK II and then the rest of the games with his own moves like the acid spit, force ball, and invisibility.
beating reptile in this game was bigger than beating the game itself.
Life has always revolved around hidden reptiles..
some of these sound effects remind me of MUGEN...
ahhhaa the 90s Arcade is best
didn't know reptile was also named scorpion back in the early days.
No. The creator of this character said he later included him on MKII and called him Reptile due to its popularity on MK I. And please don't reply with an argument trying to prove how the creator is wrong and you're right.
You can tell that Reptile switches between being a palette swap of Scorpion and Sub-Zero; when he is about to use one of Sub-Zero's moves, you can see his standing pose change from Scorpion's to Sub-Zeo's, and vice versa.
I'm not sure that's true;
It's always funny to see Santa Claus in the background.
You make a good point with Mario and Tetris. But, due to inflation, video games were way more expensive back in the 90s than they are today. It's just that back in those days, the economy was better off.
This must've been a really badass game back then😉👍
the arcade edition has the best sound quality tht I ever played this video is gonna make me wanna go to the arcade to play it just for fun
Stil my favorite looking Mortal Kombat. I love all the MKs. But this MK just looks and sounds you're playing an old Kung Fu flick.
