For a lot of guys who grew up in the *single mother wasteland* , this is knowledge that we couldn't get from fathers or grandfathers, but hopefully we can pass along ourselves. I don't recommend reusing the pressure tank, especially this one because it's such a bad design. The drain is not at the absolute bottom center of the tank, it's offset, meaning that water that condenses inside the tank won't be properly purged when the tank is drained. And who knows if the compressor was cared for properly, you're supposed to drain them after each use, but most people don't and the tank ends up rusting out.
    Repainting an old tank is dangerous as it hides the condition of the tank. I recommend that if the tank is to leave your possession, you render it useless by drilling large holes in it or cutting it up. It's not worth the risk of it exploding under pressure and killing someone. I also don't recommend pressurizing at all if possible.
    I've serviced a couple of compressors that had never been drained and the owners were complaining they were running all the time, in both cases, several gallons of rusty water came shooting out the drain. They kept them in service despite warnings that the tank was compromised.

    • @Leonardo-rp1gk
      @Leonardo-rp1gk 5 років тому

      So that tank is useless because it is rusty from inside. But how can you fix it? you buy another tank?

    • @GGigabiteM
      @GGigabiteM 5 років тому +9

      @@Leonardo-rp1gk Yes, you scrap the tank and buy another. Once the tank starts corroding, the integrity is compromised and there's no way to repair it safely.
      Compressed gasses should be treated with care, there's a ton of energy stored up just waiting to be released. take a look at what happens when truck tires explode, they can send pieces of tire flying for dozens of yards and shatter windows of other cars on the road. Split rim tires are another example that aren't called widow makers for no reason.
      Compressors are even more dangerous as the pressure is far higher and you're dealing with a metal container. I've heard of people being near cut in half by detonating compressor tanks, losing legs, being impaled, etc.

    • @r1273m
      @r1273m 5 років тому +1

      That is a very interesting comment. I have a compressor which has had little use over the 20 years or so I have had it. In fact it has never been on for the last couple of years. I am thinking of putting it up for sale but I am worried about the rust that maybe inside of the pressure tank and if there is anywhere I can get it tested. Maybe a new tank would be the safest option. @@GGigabiteM

    I would've liked to see the split in the piston rings orientated at 180° to each other on each piston...and perhaps a little assembly oil as well...

      Most high pressure compressors currently use DC servo motors.
      Although it will break down if impossible electricity flows, it can not be repaired, so if there is a breakdown now, there is only exchange.
      Due to the high cost of parts, most people exchange them instead of repairing them. If it applies to these cases, it will be broken in a couple of years, discount will be effective.
      Normal pressure compressor is inefficient in Japan, but it is definitely good.

    I have seen so many of these shows where they use typical spray paint to refinish " work type" equipment. Problem with this is it scratches so easy it rarely even gets back together without scratches. Should be using " Hammerite" paint as it not only gives a superior looking finish it also resists scratching a million times better and the paint is so thick it gives a texture that hides imperfections in the painted surface. Hopefully you read this and try it out on your next project

    Great work. But the pressure tank sholud be done a penetrant inspection at least. It is more important than repainting. In addittion, electrolytic capacitors shold be replaced.

      Just run capacitors. They usually either work or they don't.

    I see you tapped the threads...I assume you used a NPT 1/2"? (Pipe Thread) tap? I wanted to clean my threads on my compressor and my tap sets did not have a NPT. Have to visit Harbor Freight now! Great video...I like to do the same with my tools and equipment, just not as detailed as you! Great stuff!

    Just additional info: Compressor tanks are usually good for 10 years many compressors have stamped on the tank something like Do no use/Destroy after 10 years its because the tank can and will corrode on inside and one day it will literally explode i have experienced this one time and it scared shit out of me. So be carefull or just buy new tank/whole compresor. Its not worth it risking your health with restored crap.
