    Glad I watched the documentary. I found Vivian to be a courageous woman, left alone and isolated and victimized by racist. Yet, she never shouted about it, she just did what she had to do to raise her children. Bravo to you Vivian - I celebrate you Vivian 🎉 your memory and your legacy.

    I watched it after seeing your video and cannot put into words how my heart was broken for her, knowing how much she loved that man and how he was literally destroying her mentally and emotionally, leaving her all alone and their kids to raise without him like that. This is how he treated his own wife after giving him all of herself, her love, devotion and support all those years. He turned his back on her quite literally, all for the love of fame, drugs and lust, as 'if' she had hadn't even existed. Mind boggling. Well, out of sight, out of mind as the saying goes, only in this case, Cash took it quite too literally. Also, June knew precisely what she was doing, she warned Vivian that he (Johnny) would be hers. Even before this encounter, Vivian was right to instinctively fear her.

    Well said.
    I was a longtime Johnny Cash fan for years but the book etc has changed it for me. Read between the lines and he also smacked Vivian around as well.
    The great love story they go on about is overpumped in my eyes. June blatantly stated to Vivian she'd get him eventually. It's quite hypocritical for the image they went on to portray.

Mainly June. Not judging but I can’t understand it really because she wasn’t very pretty and it was moma and sisters and dad who where really famous and June wasn’t that great of a singer either.. it’s none of my business but I watched this documentary as told by his own children so it can’t not be true. Vivian wasn't addicted to drugs as Johnny sadly was. He suffered more than she did. You can't live a high life when you're tormented by drugs and booze. Vivian taking care of her children at home was a blessing, I'm sure.
      Apparently, she did a good job.
      She sacrificed for Johnny.

    I had the exact reaction to this documentary as the reviewer did! Walk the line is such a favorite movie of mine, but I’m so sad that Vivian was portrayed as a bitter, cold, nagging woman who thwarted Johnny’s career. This documentary made me cry for the beautiful love that was lost through a perfect storm of drugs, distance and infidelity. I know Johnny and June were a great love story, but I think his love with Vivian would’ve been just as great had those obstacles not been there.
    I thought the fact that he willingly called the Catholic Diocese to reinstate Vivians membership... saying that she did nothing wrong in this situation and it was all on him, was proof that he still carried Vivian in his heart. I think if he had read those thousand letters on occasion he would’ve found a way to save his marriage.
    I have a lot less respect for June Carter now, she’s not the saint the industry and John Carter Cash portrayed her as.

    • @schoomzer

      Susan Keller There are no saints in this world, just people trying to find love and happiness in life. Johnny was no saint either. He pursued June Carter until he had her, and there is no stopping that kind of passion. It's interesting, though that you pass no judgement on Johnny, just June Carter. Hmmm...

    • @susankeller4170
      @susankeller4170 2 роки тому +16

      @@schoomzer well Johnny never was portrayed as a saint...so no need to comment on that. On the other hand the movie repeatedly portrayed June as the person who steered Johnny straight. From Vivian’s point of view Mama Maybell Carter and June had their sights set on John from the outset. And June falsely portrayed herself as a long suffering mother to those girls, which wasn’t true. By the way, passing judgement means one has decided another’s ultimate place in the eternities…I simply stated that I was disappointed to find the image that was presented in Walk the Line wasn’t accurate for June or Vivian for that matter. I do have a lot less respect for her, that’s just a fact.

      @@susankeller4170 Vivian's perspective is jaded about June Carter. She was the woman that Vivian lost her beloved Johnny Cash to. You don't understand that the documentary is also biased in favor of Vivian. Of course, Vivian was angry. She resented June on many levels. June did help Johnny to deal with his vices. That's one of the reasons that June Carter was the love of his life. He did Vivian wrong. He was unfaithful. He wasn't there for her and his children, and he started another family with June. She had a right to be angry at him and at June Carter. Face the facts, Amanda. By the way, you didn't have to be Italian to be a cast member of the Jersey Shore reality show. June pulled the oldest trick on Vivian in illicet-affair-history. She made the wife angry enough to kick him out into her waiting arms. This is what my mother said at the time it happened. Johnny wanted them both. He would have never made the decision to leave Vivian on his own. June would have eventually moved on when she realized Johnny was not going to leave Vivian.
    I witnessed this with another woman in a triangle. The mistress’ friends would call the wife and “anonymously inform where the two lovers were. The wife caught them and kicked him out. He’s still with the other woman.

    So why did Rosanne Cash, Johnny Cash, and everybody else go around calling June his soulmate and love of his life if all she did was steal Cash from Vivian? In her autobiography, Rosanne Cash states that her mother, understandably, could not see that Johnny and June were meant to be together. She has said on more than one occasion that her father would not have lived as long as he did without June.
    I'm all for them setting the record straight about how their mother has been portrayed, but the man has stated in his own words many times that June was the love of his life. He even said he told her he was going to marry her one day while still being married to Vivian. He said these things.
    If anyone is the villain here, it's Cash. June wasn't anywhere Johnny didn't want her to be.

    • @thebigmick1977

      I'm not sure this is a story about heroes and villains. I don't doubt that June was the love of his life, and she was instrumental in getting his vices under control. The tragedy, as I see it, is how Hollywood and Nashville treated Vivian and portrayered her a an unhinged jealous woman. I understand liberties are always going to be taken when adapting a story to film, but her portrayal focused mainly on her negative aspects.
      Personally, I don't think Johnny or June are bad people. Sometimes, people fall out of love or fall in love with someone else. It's always happened and always will happen. It's the treatment of Vivian by the elietes, including June reportedly, but not Johnny from what I've read.

    I don't do twitter, and I have no idea what exactly is discussed there on the subject of Vivian Liberto and Johnny Cash. However, racism was and is a brutal force in personal lives of those who were (are) in a mixed marriage. Esp. in countries with at the time racist segregational laws like (specific states in) U.S., and South-Africa during Apartheid (which is another name for Segregation). WikiPedia on One-drop-rule: "The one-drop rule is a legal principle of racial classification that was prominent in the 20th-century United States. It asserted that any person with even one ancestor of black ancestry ("one drop" of "black blood") is considered black (Negro or colored in historical terms)... This concept became codified into the law of some U.S. states in the early 20th century. It was associated with the principle of "invisible blackness" that developed after the long history of racial interaction in the South, which had included the hardening of slavery as a racial caste system and later segregation." The so called one drop rule is part of American culture, and it is part of white racist, supremacist history, culture and laws in the U.S. This 'one drop rule' thing is not invented by Black twitter, it is a white supremacist racist American thing to label people by law to exclude them from all kinds of basic human rights. Sofar I know Vivian's roots are a meltingpot of European (e.g. Italian/Sicilian, Irish, German) as well as AfricanAmerican roots. Her AfricanAmerican ancestors already passed for white, and were registered as 'white' before Vivian's generation. Passing is another consequence of U.S. racist culture, and one of the mechanisms used by AfricanAmericans to advance in society. I guess that Vivian did not know about her Black and Mulatto ancestors. Since explicit racist segregational laws still existed until 1967 in the Southern States (as in South-Africa) it is still understandable that even if she knew about her 'one drop Black ancestry' she would have kept silent about it. If you are interested to know more ... One of the best books about passing is 'Autobiography of an ex-colored man' (1912/1927) by James Weldon Johnson.

      So none of this apply to Vivian. I’m not sure why you’re posting somebody else’s narrative and talking about South Africa. You clearly didn’t watch the documentary about her or too much research. Only one of her 15 second great grandparents wasn’t all white. That second great grandmother was multiracial, and the third great grandmother was also multiracial. Everybody else was white. So the narrative was long buried and gone by the time she came along. Shed has unique features, but she doesn’t look that different than many Sicilians in southern Italians. if you were done more research and understand that there was a color line in this country and there was black and then a color line and then white. You could not be in between the line or the white on the black side of color white. Had she actually been black or even multi racial there never would’ve been a Johnny Cash. They would’ve been hounded out of existence.

    • @hiptowaist
      @hiptowaist Рік тому

      Finally, mentioning passing isn’t fair because no one in Vivian‘s family history passed. The marriage between the multi racial almost completely white slave, and her white husband was out in the open, legally registered by the county recorder and then later, when he died, she moved to Mexico and married another white man and she and her family waited at the Civil War. They would’ve made sense that her children would’ve been white because that’s what they were. Who cares about what the laws were? Why should they have had to disrespect their identity when they were all predominately European anyway? Please search for a essay about Vivian on Medium called eugenics rebooted for more clarification. Don’t confuse passing with self identity.
