I am a post war baby, now aged 77 but I still remember my fathers words “ if it wasn’t for Russia we’d all be speaking German now” just as George said. My father was also a great fan of Russia and their way of life. When I was young I also remember him saying if you were a street cleaner you could get on a train in Russia and be seated beside a top scientist because there was no class system in Russia. I grew up in Australia and we kept hearing, 'If it weren't for the Americans, we'd all be speaking Japanese now.'
That is undoubtedly true with a slight correction - if it weren't for the USSR. Russia was just part of it, albeit by far the largest, both in terms of the contribution to the victory and people lost. Still, noting just Russia doesn't sit well with me, as it diminishes the role of all the other constituent republics.
Our school books NEVER mentioned Ruzzia, only as a grown up I learned about the epic battle all the way from MotherR to Germany. I have never seen anything like that.
