"delta" in math means "difference". So the plugin is playing the difference between the input and the output, ie the bit that it is removing.
And I believe the delta in audio is usually produced by flipping the phase between two sources, leaving only the phase difference. Might be wrong or over-simplifying it.

It's incredible. I find it's also great when taming huge reverb sends. It can keep them massive but without sounding too messy.

For those interested in buying soothe 2... I've spent thousands and thousands on plugins, vsts, fx etc. Soothe 2 is the best music production tool I've ever bought.
A friend and I are so close to finishing our first EP together and we're in the final stages - this video has truly, TRULY changed everything. Soothe2 (Very Good)
Gullfoss (Very Good)
BX_refinement (Good)
SmoothOperator (Good)
Smart EQ2 (Very Good)
I use Soothe on individual tracks and Gullfoss on the mix bus/master. They’re both amazing tools but for me have very different sounds for different purposes.
Smooth operator has a great UI but I haven’t really found a use for it, I find it gets way too extreme too quick and it’s hard to dial in subtly.
Smooth operator is good because it's tye cheapest option I think
@@safe Gullfoss and Soothe for me are two of the very few plugins that I think are worth their high price and can’t be replaced with cheaper or free alternatives like most other plugins.
Gullfoss and Soothe not only save me heaps of time mixing (which increases my profits) but also made such an improvement to the quality of my mixes that I could up my rates. They literally paid for themselves.
@@safe The UI of Smooth Operator is basically the opposite of Soothe. Rather than boosting the frequency range you want to attenuate, you drag down the curve into the spectrum analyser to attenuate that range.
I think it’s a great UI, but I agree even the slightest cut into the frequency range drastically changes the sound of the signal and always sounds too heavy handed.

One way I like to conceptualize the hunt for those 5% improvements is to frame it as the search for all of the problems that each take 5% away from what the song could be. The difference is just semantic in a sense, but framing the editing/mixing/mastering process as removing problems rather than adding more details helps keep that step in focus for me.
omg andrew for the rescue AGAIN! thank you so much!!! you've saved my life! i'm releasing my old music soon and it's ear bleedingly bad mixes. but they're from 13 years ago and performed live before i knew what DAWs were, stuff i made with standalone VSTs recorded onto virtual dj and mixed like i'm in a 60s studio or something XD now with soothe i can finally make that stuff release worthy and ppl wont have to go to the doctors after listening. thank youuuuuuuu
I bought Soothe and then Soothe 2 and Spiff. These plugins are some of the only ones I've never regretted for a minute. I use them everyday and they never let me down. Absolute must have plugins!
do you use spiff on every mix?
@@HumanBeingWithFeelings Yes... There may have been one in the last two years that I didn't, but that was a piano instrumental. Otherwise, it always finds a place.

I've been using soothe2 for a couple of months now and it is a game changer. It cleans your audio-files so much faster than before. This video is also made super clear and understandable. You have made a great video Andrew 👏
been using soothe 2 forever, it has saved my mixes more times than I can count now. I have a habit of instinctively making music with lots of upper mid buildup, this is a blessing if you tend to let your frequencies run rampant in production stage, just calmly tames everything after the fact, mixes sound better than you could have ever imagined.
I'm a dj and voice over artist who edit and master on Audacity. Is Soothe 2 applicable in my case?

I absolutely love soothe and currently use a pretty much on all of my projects. I really love the sidechain function to make some space for one instrument without carving out too much on the other instruments
Soothe 2 was a game changer for me (esp on electric guitar), but this freaking video allowed me to understand the plugin way more along with some issues i have sometimes that this can fix too. Soothe 2 is OP and so necessary. Machine learning plugins are speeding up my workflow so much. gulfoss, smart EQ, soothe 2, etc. all incredible time savers.

Been using Soothe2 especally for the sidechain for some time now. It really is amazing how much it helps with getting the right focus in a soundfield. One thing you didn't mention (i think) is the stereo mode down on the left. By clicking on it you can also choose from side/mid and and i've been using that to make sure that the vocal has space in the middle without processing the sides. It really works well to kinda "glue" everything together.
so you sidechain the voice Bus insert to your instrumental bus insert, then drop soothe 2 on the bus instrumental to curve space for the voices is that right? what range of frequencies are you targetin please ? find this video and the range targeted seems to be the whole spectrum for that guy. your advice? ua-cam.com/video/2J8h3Sx_65I/v-deo.html

One of the best plugins ever. Highly recommended. And don't forget RX-9, the only plugin suite I know of that can restore a unique modular recording you just screwed up by recording it too loud.
RX9 is godly. I use the music rebalance for a live recording i did that i started to mix and realized the vocal mic picked up the acoustic guitar as loud as the vocals. i could have just used that one mic, but instead decided to use the RX9 rebalance to separate the vocal from the guitar to process and treated it like it's own mic. so i had the acoustic guitar mic, the 'vocal' mic, and the 'room' mic. turned out sounding incredible. also the de-noise plugins and dialog isolate are god tier time savers. esp guitar de-noise. I worked in post production at one point and dropped the cash for the advanced version, best money i ever spent. I suggest to everyone i know (who are musicians, podcasters, twitch streamers, etc) to at least get the elements version.
oh and the de-clipper tool is pretty badass as well. saved a lot of headaches for me.
RX 9 mouth declick is this dehydrated mofos best friend! lol. I praise the RX suite whenever I can. It's so transparent, and they're all so effective for plugins that require 1 or 2 tweaks to dial in. It's really freaky how effective RX tools are in certain situations. Mouth declick allows me to e so much less concerned with spoken word mic etiquette. Transparent enough for singing as well.

@@niganools1502 advanced is really only worth it if you are getting post production gigs. Standard for everyone else. Worth its weight in gold. I can’t tell you how many sessions were ruined that have been saved years later because of it. The artist would pass on releasing the song and now reconsider it. All depends on how often you have noisy recordings though, but it is a very valuable tool. I work with a lot of artists who do home recordings where I don’t always have the option to re-record it or do it better. Along with podcasts and other stuff. It’s paid for itself for sure. I’d grab it soon while holiday says are happening. (And check the site plugin discounts for a slightly better deal).
What do you use in RX9 that’s different to RX8 that you used to repair overly loud modular recordings

Nice vid on Soothe2, Andrew! As explained, it's great for removing resonant frequencies. I tend to use Softube's Tape (Saturator plugin) afterwards - as it helps to smooth it all out. The thing that I find it incredible for, is when I use my keyboard's horns. Sometimes there are annoying frequencies that almost have a nasal element to them. Soothe2 greatest feature is it's granularity. Pinpoint accuracy in lowering those unwanted tones, while not affecting the original sound. Amazing stuff.

I LOVE the effect Soothe2 gives you with so little effort. I would highly recommend the NOVA TDR EQ which is a free alternative until you are able to afford Soothe and it's upgrade.
Does nova remove harshness automatically or do you have to manually set all the frequencies?

I’m new to this, start to learn how it really works. But it surprisingly epic plugin to put in all your tracks especially vocals. It really tame those harsh frequencies recorded with cheap microphone before putting any mic mod plugins in my vocal bus…..Really awesome
5:34 That's so true, when I use this plugin I don't really pay too much attention to the numbers but to what I hear. The controls can be a bit confusing but that forces you to use your ears and "forget" about exact numbers,etc
Great overview! Thanks for the tips. Have been experimenting with the side chain on all sorts of things, and also really love it on kick/bass relation. Word of caution to only use what you’re really needing - otherwise the “life” of the sound may degrade and fall more flat.
Instead of soother you could try a multiband compressor, as I reckon a wider band probably would help to make things punchier.
The guitar example in the beginning was amazing. The deessed vox, less so (prolly yt compression and my cheap phones), but the control in the dips seems like a solid use case!
I thought the de-essing example was actually worse with the plugin than without.
The amazing thing is Au5 actually showed how Soothe 2 can used as a frequency mask by using the sidechain method which can lead to some cool sound design.
This actually made me realize what Multi-Band compression does. I may have to use it more.
Ive seen a lot of people compare Soothe2 to Gullfoss, but its getting clear to me that while they are in the same niche they can do different things. Ive been using both with Soothe2 first in the signal line, having Gullfoss do minor changes to its output (sometimes on individual tracks and sometimes on the master). Anyone having input on how you use the two in combination?
The sidechaining by frequency is an idea for a plugin I've had for a long time because it just seems SO useful. I'm sad I won't get to make it now, but I'm happy I won't have to make it now.
You sold it to me and i am glad you did. A must have. Especially for any bedroom producer that uses everything inside the box. Rids of that nasty digital harshness and excellent de esser for vocals. Going to try side chaining the vocals to sit in the mix next.
I've been curious about this plugin for a long time. It's pretty much an automated multiband, which is pretty cool.

Found Vastaus by Wavegrove today. Free, much less control, but similar effects. I found it was pretty nice for taming sibilant sounds. The visual representation on Soothe definitely takes it far and above for surgical edits though.
This does look handy as a shortcut instead of spending time hunting down bands in dynamic EQ.
Maybe I'm weird but I prefer that guitar sound with Soothe off; the higher pitch frequencies make it feel so much brighter and prettier, whereas with it off it feels muddy and more harsh IMO. Maybe I have weird preferences tho.
Yes, especially in a mix cutting out the “harshness” may lead to it losing clarity. I think it was used too extremely in that example.
same at 8:20 he smears the "f"s - if you up the quality settinh this helps with phasey comb filtering
Usually the issue with the high pitched frequencies that poke out isn't at lower volumes... it's when the mix is cranked up that those peaks can feel like ice picks in your ears. That's what Soothe 2 is best at - getting rid of those. Of course, you can go too far and kill the life of the thing.
I agree. It took everything that made that guitar tone sound like a good guitar tone.

You can do the frequency side chaining with a dynamic EQ. Namely TDR Nova. It's free as well.

One cool thing to do with soothe is on a parallel aux, and send the reverbs and delays there, the track Will like dont have mudd in this effects

I've learned a ton from your channel over the years, but a lot of the time lately it does feel like just a high quality ad. I understand that this is your job, but I'd find it easier to trust if you would also discuss cheaper/free alternatives or workarounds using stock plugins that you would apply to the same mixing situation.That would probably make the videos longer, but it would also provide more value to your audience instead of predominantly functioning to encourage sales of a product. I've considered purchasing Soothe before this video, looked at it last week actually, but held off because it seems pretty hyped. Understanding how it works under the hood, and what it takes to apply those effects with other plugins, would enable your viewers to make a more informed decision about what these products are actually worth.
Some plugins are just THAT good and essential. If you are doing this as a career you should own it, and if you are doing this as a hobby you should use a cracked version. This is industry standard right now. Just like there is no vocal without melodyne/autotune on it, there are probably few tracks without soothe.

As soon as you said "you don't have to have that ducking" I added this to my shopping list. Pretty impressive! I have an annoying nasal click when I record my speaking voice, around 4kHz - do you think it would remove that? the problem is that it's a very brief sound, so I guess it would need a super fast attack and release?
Could always try a Dynamic EQ or a Multiband Compressor as well

I love soothe, but I'm actually listening to it's effect too much on mixes nowadays, I think that the best mixers know when something have a really bad ringing that needs to be dealt with and when that resonance is the actual sound that defines that element in the context of the production/mix.
Yea, i can see it as a problem solver, but to my ear it also quickly is taking away the body of an instrument. I think if you use it everywhere or too much you quickly end up with a mix that is hollow and has unclear/undefinable instruments

Would using soothe2 as apart of your stereo out chain towards the end of the mixing process be a viable option? Kinda like using soothe on the track as a whole?
Works well for mastering/mix chain stuff, just got to mess with it a bit to get it to the right spot.
