  • The dawn of artificially intelligent androids is upon us, and one man must choose between synthetic freedom and the future of humankind.
    "Hard Reset" by Deepak Chetty
    #DUST #scifi #shortfilm
    More About Hard Reset:
Hard Reset recently won the Advanced Imaging Society Lumiere Award for Best 3D Live Action Short Film of the year. Other honorees included Star Wars The Force Awakens, The Martian, and Pixar’s Inside Out.
Hard Reset is the first 3D stereoscopic graduate thesis film created in partnership with UT3D, the country's first stereoscopic certificate production program at a public university.
    DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT:
Hard Reset was my thesis film at the University of Texas at Austin's MFA film program. It is a love letter to my favorite genre across all media, science-fiction. The film was shot natively in stereoscopic 3D with the support of UT3D and It was filmed mostly in studio at UT with some additional location photography around town. The piece is actually a pilot for a much larger project I would like to develop (with or without 3D) using the world we have created. I directed, co-wrote and did all of the visual effects on the film. I am proud of the film as in the past most of my work has solely focused on visuals and lacked clear narrative, and I feel that this is a development and step into the way I would want my future projects to progress. From start to finish it was a passion project that took almost 2 years. It owes everything to the films that inspired me to become a filmmaker and the genre that defines all the stories I want to tell.

First of all - my respect for a truly compelling movie . It smells a little like bladrunner , but in a good way . Why is it that there are more good indie movies out there than the ones made by the big companies ? Instead of endless prequels , sequels and so on maybe it´s better to make some quality stuff ?

I honestly can't adequately express my admiration for what you've accomplished here. I wish you the best on your future endeavors and if this is a sign of the quality your future work will be, I will be expecting great things from you. Now for the bad. If it took 2 years to create this short film, then any sort of sequel or expansion will be some time off. Shop this around to netflix, hulu, prime and so on as fast as you can. Cause I don't wanna wait a moment longer than I have to to see what else you come up with. Seriously, great job man. You got at least one fan so far and I'm betting millions more to come. Keep it up!

You've still got a lot to learn. The special effects were very impressive, but special effects do not a story make. There is the germ of a good story here, but that germ is not new or original. If you wrote the script, try again. It is melodramatic to the point of parody. It is like a 1930s B movie. And pacing? My god, in the middle of an action sequence ( _several,_ in fact ), why don't we just talk it to death? It's like watching paint dry while bullets are flying. If your teachers gave you good grades for this, if none of them said any of the things I'm saying, you should demand a refund from your school.
But, on the bright side, on the strength of this audition tape, you can probably find some dumb producer who will bankroll your first mediocre professional project. If you are satisfied with mediocre.

This should be the opening part of a blockbuster. The two leads were particularly well done - they have more chemistry than many big movies manage. The actress in particular did an amazing job portraying a character awakening to sentience for the first time. A truly outstanding performance, and I hope we see more of her in films.

Very true. A perfect film would be perfect in every way. But it you can't have everything then cheesy fight scenes with strong narrative and character outweigh the greater cheese of vapid eye candy. That's why these these short films are memorable while today's Hollywood cinematics are uninteresting and forgettable.

so many times ? I think not that many.Of course, Blade Runner, along with Total recall (did you notice the disk in the guy's head ?). And It reminds me of a short SF I read in the 1970's , I cant ' remember the title, but the subject was also the same : the guy was an human, and he helped the androids (machines) to get free, and to be able to reproduce by themselves, through a device "the craddle". The difference is that the guy thinks until the end that the girl he loves is human. But as a reader *spoil* , towards the end, we know it's not the case. But it's suggested that the android girl is not only pretending to have feelings. We'll never know. If anybody knows this story, the author, I would be glad to read i again ... 40 years after. Just for info, I read the french translation in the 70's.

You do see narratives using this theme quite a lot...similar to the British TV series "Humans" and the synths coming to life...what most people don't realise is that WE are biological synths...they're letting us know a hard reset is coming! We are the robots and we only get short glimpses of a real higher awareness (during heightened fear & stress etc).
So when in a blink of an eye your biological tech, and that constantly running inner dialogue (that is constantly programming you), stops...we all wake up!!! And all the masons and Luciferian mystery schools loose their stranglehold on the hidden wisdom!!!
We'll all be given a chance to wake up...why do you think they're desperately installing the Israeli 5G system everywhere (without indemnity insurance...it's that dangerous Lloyds of London refuse to insure governments!!!).
They know it's coming...their 5G control grid is being pushed through without safety checks (because they know it will fail all of them!). But I guess the snowflake generation of morons won't care...they'll get faster connectivity whilst being microwaved into an early grave!!!
It's just like that film with Bruce Willis where their synth surrogate bodies are removed and it's all weird and sensitive for them walking around in their own 'skin'!!!
I don't mind if you think it's a bit far out! This world is much weirder, beneath the false media facade, than most people realise! 😀👍🏻💕

Yes, the tech was very good. It was the only thing in this film that rose above mediocre. The acting was not terrible, but it was not close to good. I'm not sure if that's the actors' fault or the exceedingly melodramatic script.

It's interesting to see a story where the ones trying to give consciousness to AI robots are the good guys, whereas the ones trying to prevent the AI robots from taking over the world are the bad guys. Usually it's the other way round in movies and logically it makes sense for it to be the other way round (humans trying to save our species and all..) but in this short they've managed to portray the opposite viewpoint so well, it makes you sympathise with the AI robots and want them to be 'free' from the reigns of the 'evil' humans (us).... very well played game with our minds!

Very desceptive movie, props to director.
Life is complicated. Any lifeform knows that.
It is easier to be a robot hooker than just a regular one, just saying..
I have a point, things change once yuo get a magic pen to write reality with. And it's already real. I mean look at this shit, im watching someones filtered thoughts with people in them that have as vivid mind as everyone elses and they do this random stuf that has a sideffect of bouncing energy that we transform into an eletrical signal that is connected to a finetunning device and a bunch of machinery that is vivid as everyone perceives it to be, will turn out exactly how we imagined it.
It's salvation in ignorance when we can't do it with 0's and 1's.
Build robots, not santient robots. It will kinda go its course into becoming a fully fledged being. Its the only know we'll know how.
Lets hope good people filter more than bad ones.

@Deepak Chetty: A story told well. I have been reading science fiction since I was twelve. I'm 65 so that's a LOT of science fiction. I have always enjoyed stories of robots, "synths", androids becoming sentient, and the struggle they face to find their identity. My preference in these types of stories is that the android becomes this way due to some sort of accident or malfunction, meaning it isn't common to all androids in the story - it doesn't quit fit into the human world, but no longer belongs to the machine world, either. You've left the ending open enough to imagine all kinds of continued story and what Archer will do with Jane's core. I applaud your effort to make the effect enhance the story telling and not to add a lame story to an effect extravaganza. One does not make memorable movies from effects alone. The story in Hard Reset is very compelling. Well done.

@@pauls5745 The second book I ever read on my own in 7th grade (as opposed to school assignment) was "Caves Of Steel" This was Isaac Asimov's sequel to I Robot using the same two main characters of "Spooner" and Sonny, now working as police investigator partners in the Chicago underground. At one time, the book "Caves Of Steel" also included a collection of short stories Asimov wrote for a monthly science fiction publication using the same three characters. Much of the secondary plot or discussions in these short stories dealt mostly with the possibility of robot sentience. Even in the sequel novel, Spooner still has a difficult time coming to recognize Sonny's sentient nature. He understands Sonny's intelligence and ability for creative thought, but has a difficult time accepting Sonny's "self awareness". I must admit Dr Susan Calvin is a cold hearted bxtch in these stories but it is the extreme opposite views between Dr Calvin and Spooner; more pronounced in the stories than in the movie, that makes the subject so dynamic in the book and short stories. ... and yes, I am a fan of both the original story and the Will Smith movie. The movie was faithful to the original story with a few exceptions that I believe it honored Issac Asimov's vision.

3DPDK, I strongly suggest reading the full Ender ('s Game) series by Orson Scott Card, all the way through to the last book. There's an AI in it that awakens. .. and so much more goodness. Ender's Game was just the opening book. Card's real vision was a universe without war and the war in Ender's Game was a big mistake / misunderstanding between species.
Heck, I'd also read the Dan Simmons books; the whole Hyperion Cantos.. ALL 4 books. Most people stop at the first one, some make it through the 2nd. But the last 2 are SUPER important in the universe Dan creates.

"Synth-corp can refer you to a state psychologist if an emotional bond has been formed." That's and Oof. Little creepy too. I've been a widow for the last three years and I have been having a hard time copping with the fact that I am going to either be alone, or, eventually, have to "get back out there" and honestly neither option appeals to me. It really doesn't. I'm 40 years old now and to be blunt I don't have the energy or the drive to go back out there and compete (let's be honest IT'S A COMPETITION. "What's the best you can do, or most you can settle." Your on one side or the other depending on your... assets. Mine, being a widower with 5 out 6 children still dependents, and making an pittance my "assets" are near zero. They take all my time and most of my money (wouldn't have it any other way) so what do I have to offer? Anyway this turned into a weirdly personal rant for a YT comment. I guess the point I was driving at is that from a fairly cold and utilitarian stand point a "synth" partner would make an Ideal partner for me. I need help with the kids and since my "relationship forming days" are for the most part behind me it would work in, other ways too. I'm probably going to erase this comment... hell what do I care, fuck it. It stays up.

They have opaque white screen in front of their eyes. Maybe they would shoot better if they gave them transparent eye protection instead.

What a wonderfully written and fresh take on what the future could hold for mankind. So clever how the plot never really shows all the twist and turns, it certainly kept my attention right to the end. Very well done, and I hope you do expand this into a very successful future. Best regards from John in England

Y'all took a really unimaginative premise and made something beautiful out of it - I did not expect that twist!

If I ever win the lottery or something where I get a lot of money somehow I’m totally paying whoever made this to make a full length movie because this was absolutely amazing
This is the sort of this I would pay to watch

I enjoy most of this channel's uploads. I'm a big SciFi/Fantasy fan in all the different media. But this particular short was a fun trip!
I was drawn in from the get go, so much so that I forgot I was watching a short format film until the end. I love a good twist too and this one didn't fail to deliver. I wanna see a full length version with the same cast. I sure hope you get to expand this world you've createdl. Damn that would be a ride!

Weird how things intersect my Favorite vampire Josephine McAdam is amazing in this. I think it's awesome how the shorts (writers and actors) are getting some extra eyes on them.

I congratulate you. I noticed, there are many "hard" comments about your work. Sift through them with the purpose of growth, not as a judgement as to whether you are talented or not. You ARE talented.
Personal comment: Strengthen the concept that you are working with AI's. They are an evolving "different" race, that we cannot be sure of their objectives. Keep watchers off balance, not sure of what direction things may go; of how much influence we have and programming has over the AI's. Play the chess game backwards; figure out the steps that lead to your final outcome. May you have a very successful life!
