    I'm excited to see Spain performing at the level we are used to seeing those women perform already. Love the tactical philosophy. As a culé I'm very proud of the girls. Alexia Putellas is a beast. I hope futfem keeps getting more popular so the level keeps rising, so Liga F gets more competitive and women can make a living of the sport even in lower categories.

      I made this comment in a bar a few weeks ago while watching the women's WC. Too many people bash the game for not being as advanced as the men's game... seems like we forgot it had 60-70 years of development beforehand. With how fast the women's game is growing in popularity the sky's the limit. I'm here for it, more football to watch.

    Yes, please more on the World Cup 2023 teams. After watching some of the friendly matches, this is going to be a very interesting cup with some surprises. I see Zambia (strong, fast) as a good candidate for the Upset Specialists in this tournament.
    Dunno about having 32 teams. It means more nations get to be on the premier international football stage which is a good; on the flip side, some matchups could end up being blowouts.

    • @janthony21
      @janthony21 10 місяців тому +3

      I think we’ll see fewer blowouts than we have in previous years. Germany in 2015 and USA in 2019 are the double digit clean sheets, I think. Vietnam may not win a match, but their defense is a lot better than Thailand’s four years ago.
      We saw the blowouts at the qualifying group stages. Australia 18-0 over Indonesia and then Aus crashed out to South Korea in the first knockout round.

    • @richard6440
      @richard6440 10 місяців тому

      I hope the next WWC will have 40 teams in it. It means more nations get to be on the premier international football stage which is a good; on the flip side, some matchups could end up being blowouts. ( thanks jack ) . I think the benefits of the lower teams actually ' getting ' to the finals , outweighs that they might lose 13-0. The boost it would give to the game in their home country will be worth the 3 or 4 losses. They'll go home heroes whatever the score. They'll gain so much experience and knowledge from taking part. Watching in real life the top teams in the world play and thinking ' Thats how we need to play, where we need to get to '. Will Fifa do it? Doubt it. But its what the WWC needs.

    • @janthony21
      @janthony21 10 місяців тому +1

      @@richard6440 FIFA is going to 48 teams for the MWC in 2026, aren't they? I think if they get or exceed their '2 billion viewers' goal for the WWC, they'll be trying to get as many nations investing in the WWC broadcasting rights as they can.

    • @richard6440
      @richard6440 10 місяців тому

      @@janthony21 Up to , but excluding Qatar , Fifa sold the broadcasting rights for man and womens WC' as a package. So Fifa decided how much went as prize money to each cup. The womens game is increasing with players , fans, and viewers. But their % of the prize money did not increase. Fia decided this time, to sell the rights separately . That, on its own, is not a bad idea. The timing however, was a disaster. They picked Australia. The other side of the world to the main fan base, Europe. Combine that with the ever increasing cost of the bids, for the tv rights to the mens WC , meant that the tv companies had spent more than they wanted, and had nothing left. A perfect storm, if you will. And the womens WC was left high and dry. I blame Fifa . And to a lesser extent, the tv companies. I didnt know the mens WC was going to 48 for the next one. I'll look that up. I havent even looked to see where the next ones are. Fifa really have to work on the tv rights. One company bid over $100 million for Qatar, and $1 million for Australia. Really? I mean Really? Wtf are you thinking?

    • @janthony21
      @janthony21 10 місяців тому +1

      @@richard6440 And I think that was why FIFA rejected those bids and forced them to rebid. I don't know if I would say the 'primary' audience for a the women's world cup is Europe, though. They've done an admirable job of scheduling North and South American national matches to hit decently in their home timezones. Brazil apparently shifted the standard workday start time back on mornings when Brazil is playing, and DC turned their bars to 24-hour licenses for the duration of the WWC. The worst scheduled matches for Europe and Africa appear to be when they play North or South American teams.
      I hope the WWC gets a large viewership, and I can't imagine why it wouldn't in England, France, and Germany. Everyone seems to be trying to maximize the potential viewership for this tournament around the world. So if it does well, then there will be a lot more arguments about TV deals and bids for the next one in 2027.

    Great video! I'd love to see you analyze barca's femeni team and how they are challenging Lyon to be the top dogs in women's football. This UWCL final has been one of the best games of football I've watched in recent years where Barca women came back from a 0-2 deficit at half time to go and win the trophy, a mentality that the current men's team has yet to show on the highest level.

    A lot of analysis I've seen from other channels have pretty much ignored Australia, which is crazy. They have beaten Sweden, England and France in the build up, and other than France game with an incomplete squad. I agree Spain is a very strong contender, especially now with the return of some of the Barcelona squad. The US can never be counted out. A few big injuries, but they have depth and a winning mentality. I think England could be in trouble without their core spine, a worrisome backline, and Wiegmans lack of flexibility. I expect Brazil to do well, same with Germany, and Sweden

    Really good video. To your point on the USA's structure, I think the US will probably put Julie Ertz at 6 who is better at screening the centerbacks and better aerially than Sullivan (Ertz was actually their centerback in the 2015 tournament, and might have to play there if either one of their centerbacks are injured/suspended).
    I think having Ertz at 6 will allow them to push both fullbacks (Fox and Dunn) really far forward, although they can actually underlap quite comfortably - Dunn is a 10/8 for her club and Fox is pretty ambidexterous.
    Obviously it depends on their opposition, and if Alyssa Thompson comes in then one of the fullbacks will probably underlap since Thompson seems to be more effective out wide.
    At the end of the day, like you said the US will rely on their quality rather than positional play to generate chances.

    It's really surprising to me how similar the men's teams are to the women's teams. They're different teams with different coaches but so many of them have very similar philosophies and play styles. Japan is extremely clinical and a major scoring threat even when they have less than 1/4th of possession. A good example would be the Women's Japan team beating Spain 4-0 with 22% possession. Very similar possession to the Men's version. The Moroccan women's team is also really good out of possession and great on the counter attack. Spain plays tiki-taka just like the Men's team. Germany can't get passed the group stage despite being one of the favourites just like the men's team. The Netherlands defends really well yet can score goals pretty easily just like the men's team. Those are only the teams I've watched but their is probably more similarities to other country's men's and women's teams.

      Absolutely agree with just about everything you've said.
      I'd add Claudia Pina and Sandro Panos to those who will be greatly missed by Spain;
      with these players they would be in a class by themselves.
      Without them they will be vulnerable to teams breaking into the huge space they leave behind them -- particularly the African teams like Zambia.
      Italy should do very well -- I was impressed by Roma and Juve over the last two WCL seasons and, if their national team gels, they can do real damage.
      I never watched women's football before the year of Barca's first WCL trophy -- that season I followed Barca religiously;
      I would argue that they play the best technical game on the planet (relatively speaking) -- better than ManChitty or the Barca men..
      The game is transformed by professionalization and generation of teams by the men's clubs.
      The EUROs was a glimpse of what is to come and this World Cup could be the first view of what the women's game is to be.

    • @acojone6110
      @acojone6110 10 місяців тому

      @@mlsarchitect I also agree with what you said but comparing barca women to any men's team isn't correct because the reality is that barca women are far above everyone else, and this is because women's football still has to grow and doesn't have much competition. But I also think if Spain had everyone they'd be in a class of their own

      You're right.
      Even by next season the difference between Barca and the rest will be small, perhaps gone.
      Still different styles and philosophies, but played closer to the limits of female athletes capacities.
      Interestingly, for me, the USWNT is the one that is already there and was there before Barca.
      What they lacked (and lack still) is the a sophistication of the culture of their football.
      This is why I never watched women's football before:
      they were the only ones worth watching and there wasn't very much to see (from a football perspective).

    From a purist POV odd choices #2 & 3.
    You understand technical football - a look at your older videos tells me that.
    But if we are discussing football as purists where how a team plays the modern game matters more than the result then physical teams with average game intelligence like Matildas & USWNT shouldn't have made the list.
    Pep said - move the man to create space. Unfortunately in physical leagues like NWSL, A-League, WSL it is still mow down the man to create space.
    Although I would have taken USWNT had Mal Pugh & Macario been part of the team. 2 of their best technical brains other than Rose won't be there in this WC.

    • @sagittated
      @sagittated 10 місяців тому +1

      USA structure has two advantages:
      1. Title IX is a civil rights law from the 70's that required universities to offer as many athletic scholarships to women as they do men. As there's no women's version of profitable American football, the schools had to fully fund women's teams in other sports to make up for the 85 scholarships per Am. Football teams. Women's soccer/football benefited, offering aspiring players quality training infrastructure & coaching.
      2. NWSL started in 2013, and we've won both Cups since. Our league is balanced, competitive, & fierce. It's a talent factory. Other countries have started to spend on club level play, but NWSL isn't matched anywhere.
