I think AI would be very useful for the FIA to try and make consistent decisions on racing incidents. If you can manage to make a 3d model of each incident, you can let the AI view the similarities.
In theory that will work ( just don't do it like VAR though!)

I don't think AI will be replace driver feeling or at least in any time soon, track is evolve in each and every lap, rubber on the tarmac is evolve, wind is constantly changing, temperature increase and dropping in every minutes. If AI can win I don't think it will win in every race.

AI isn't cheap and as F1 already limits wind tunnel and CFD simulations for cost reasons, it would be a no-brained to limit AI as well.

Great video man. One area that I think goes under the radar when it comes to AI is in marketing and producing engaging fan content for social media. Red Bull with their Oracle partnership have mastered this.
Could we see F1 drivers against their AI clones tho? I’m thinking of ‘The Last Game’ ad Nike did a few years back 🤔😅
Whoa it’s BMPH! Haven’t heard from you in ages, hope you’re well. 100% agree with you on the marketing thing, if OpenAI were to sponsor an F1 team then a “real vs AI” series on social media (maybe one for every race?) would be great marketing for both imo
It's actually very interesting to see where AI can be first fully implemented. Though it's also gonna start a massive arms race in F1. Teams that can fully implement it first will leapfrog ahead of those that don't, especially if it's on critical components like strategy, racing lines, maintenance, etc. It can make strategies interesting but I don't think it will get to replacing nearly every team member. And yes it's very weird for AI to drive the car, it just removes the human aspect of what makes F1 as big as it is, primarily thanks to the 20 drivers being superstars in their own right. If every AI is as good as the one next to them then it's more than likely it will get to a point where no one will be able to overtake another car because everyone expected each others' moves.
But then again it will be interesting to see if every team has AI on who will be able to make use of it better. After all, you can tell an AI to predict the best racing line in a track, but if you shove the wrong or incomplete data to it you could see your car in the barriers after relying on AI too much. So in conclusion basically AI won't fix Ferrari's shenanigans if Ferrari can't fix it themselves lmao.

Maybe last year's Ferrari strategist was an early release of ChatGPT.
Around 2012, Red Bull F1 had a few of their engineers tour around various Universities in NA. I was very lucky to be there for one of the sessions, and in thoses days they already had super computers simulating their pitstop strategies, which I think they still use to this day (and probably most other teams). Obviously simulation can't account for FIA calling a random red flag like what happened in austrailia, or what happen if the opponents pits, so perhaps there why it still a huge human decision.
As for AI based design and aero, thoses also already exisits, and are build into standard CAD software since mid 2010s, it's called (these days) topology optimization. I seen a version of it used for CFD as well back in 2016, but using it for mechanical structures has been pretty well understood and optimize already. Where I think AI based design fail (and won't take over human job) in F1 design in the future is that topology is pretty good for solid metals, but not for caron fiber. And that is because carbon fiber wrapping is very inconsistent, by that I mean the way each part is layered, wrapped, the temperature,moisture level at the time of wrapping all affect the end product strength. Also topology for wrapped carbon fiber components is such a niche requirement, no one actually bother investing the money in it.
I respect the idea of the self driving safety car but the very first thing that came to mind was Romans Grojeans crash in 2020 and the safety car rushing to help. Yeah Roman basically got himself out but to have medical personnel literally there seconds after the crash is something I don’t think an Ai can do since it’ll just might drive pass a crash
Self driving on just the formation lap would be great. The AI can weave the car and get just the perfect amount of heat into the tires before the start.
So, dystopia is nearly here, right?
If ai does everything you can just print out a spreadsheet with who one instead of letting them race for real
F1 isn't just driver it's also the team that is participating on the sports and F1 isn't just driving for me it's also what's happening in the garage
And also humans are all involved in that and that makes it feel like art

Using AI for whatever purpose would take away from the essence of F1, which a competition between human drivers and human teams. If it becomes a competition between AIs instead, why would that be interesting to fans? AI could probably make for faster drivers already if it was allowed, but for obvious reasons it isn't allowed. So why should it be allowed to replace humans in other roles?
We dont need self driving f1 cars, the drivers are part of the sport.
