    Once you master metering by feel and not relying on any kind of electronics, the experience of photography with the MA is second to none. It's like fly fishing with a fine bamboo rod by only reading the currents in the stream.

      Nicely put!

    • @patrickjclarke
      @patrickjclarke 2 роки тому +2

      But if you use a light meter, what’s the downside, photographically? I literally haven’t had a modern Leica or SLR light meter ever fail me. I do like the fishing analogy and use it often for how I like to shoot.

    • @pushingfilm
      @pushingfilm  2 роки тому +4

      @@patrickjclarke I don't think there's any outright downside. Both ways of working can and should be able to coexist and serve each user according to their liking, as well as the context 🙂

    • @jpm5205
      @jpm5205 2 роки тому +2

      @@patrickjclarke I used to have a M6 and M7 and sold it for a M3 and a MA. For the kind of photography that I do (similar to Hashem in his videos), metering a scene/subject through a viewfinder felt like I was "bruising the scene." I felt like a paparazzi. And appealing to a meter because it was always in my viewfinder, I found, was a crutch - an unnecessary one, that slowed me down playing with a knob and a ring so 2 red arrows would light up. For non photography reasons, the pure mechanical simplicity of the M3, 2, 4, & A will likely support higher values for those models vs M5, 6s, & Ps which will eventually be electronically impaired.
      Now, the Aperture Priority mode in the M7 is something which really helped my street photography. You're not bruising the scene by metering...it just does it for you. But the shutter in my M7 bricked on me and required a very expensive repair. I'm sure it was a random unlucky event, but that scared me away from an expensive electro/analog cameras.

    • @patrickjclarke
      @patrickjclarke 2 роки тому +1

      Fair points. I did mean using aperture priority, on the M7, fwiw. And I’ve heard the Konica Hexar RF is much more reliable. I’ve also heard most all mechanical Leica shutter speeds aren’t really that accurate. But yeah I love all the options that Leica has to offer.

    Very interesting vid. My 1957 M3 double stroke has been serviced and is a joy to use. Focussing is so immediate, easy and assured and the viewfinder bright, flare free and dead simple. It's a camera the family have been asked to keep and pass on to whoever will be best placed to enjoy it after kick the 35mm film canister. I only wish my father-in-law was still alive to try it - he spoke often of Leica but never owned one and I was a Canon A1 shooter without the readies to get an M3 back then.

      My M3 DS dated back to 1957 too as well, purchased it from a Leica Store in NYC which was CLA’d. So far so good. The M6 was my initial choice at that time but the price was out of control. And the MP or MA was no where to be found.

    I shot an M3 for years but as a camera made in the 60s it was getting fairly unreliable and spent a lot of time getting repaired. Bought a new silver MP about a year ago and it's honestly perfect. Goes everywhere with my and it feels just like a modern reliable M3. Never would recommend one to a friend nor do I really understand the current Leica hype but as tool for my personal work I love it. Plan to own it for the rest of my life and leave behind the most tattered looking MP I can when I'm done with it.

      I can’t justify the M-A or M-P from a cost perspective to complement and possibly replace my iiia, so the M3 or M2 was starting to make sense since I don’t want to replace the Leica LTM glass I already own. I’d select a couple of M mount lenses to add to the kit over time. I’m not a pro. Not sure how to get a deal on a M-A, but dang nice camera. It would be my choice if Leica would sell those around the USD $3,000 mark with a decent 35mm lens as a new Leica user kit (I know, utopian). Not sure why Leica doesn’t do that. I can only think of good things from offering an “affordable” 100% mechanical camera with no electronics to service during the warranty period. It would attract more factory buyers instead of sending potential buyers a fairly frustrating used market.

    Great video man! I feel the same way about light meters. My Canon P works just fine without a light meter and I'm glad I didn't pay a premium for a rangefinder like an M6 that has a meter in it. • @baladino
    @baladino 2 роки тому

    I’ve only had my M-A for just over 6 months. It’s been a pleasure and more. The absence of logo and markings further imply that this is a camera not meant to be shown off rather a camera acting as a distillation of rangefinder photography. I paired it off with several Zeiss lenses after seeing your Zeiss kit video in the beginning and now have paired it with a 50mm summicron. Leica incites disdain and elitist accusations from other photographers though as someone who uses it almost everyday, it’s become something so much more to me. By the way Hash, the Zeiss 35mm Distagon F/1.4 is a great lens to use with the M-A.

    Bought a M2 last summer. First rangefinder experience after almost 20 years with a Nikon FM. initial reaction was definitely mixed. Being so used to a manual slr I felt held back in some ways with the rangefinder as I was trying to use it like my SLR. after a while I started feeling more comfortable with it but the lack of meter was definitely a hard thing at first to get used to. I bought one of those hotshoe meters and used that but I hated both the look of it (it ruined the clean Leica look) and the usability having to dial settings 2 times everytime (one for meter, one for camera).
    Recently lost the meter on a walk and decided to just not buy another one and go full meter less. I was practicing judging exposure by feel/sense and sunny16 and got better at it. Now I absolutely love shooting this camera with no meter and even when I use my FM sometimes I forget to pay attention to the meter and just shoot by feel. Whenever I’m unsure of the lighting I use my phone with a meter app just to give me the ball park range and then just judge from there on what to use. Film is a lot more versatile than one would imagine (maybe not slide film) and like you said, for more precise measurements a incident handheld meter will always be much more accurate than any built in meter or hot shoe meter.
    I really love this M2 now and I feel like it’s actually the closest thing to a M-A other than the frame lines which I actually prefer on the M2 because I don’t have double lines for each size. It’s build like it will survive a nuclear war

    If you're looking for a fully manual camera, the M-A might be really good, but does it warrant the price premium over a properly serviced fully manual 1950's or 60's rangefinder? A serviced Barnack Leica, Zeiss Contax, Kodak Retina or even a Soviet or Japanese Leica knockoff rangefinder with excellent lenses can be had for a few hundred dollars. All of those are excellent cameras that I'm willing to bet arguably produce results that match an M-A. I'd love to see a comparison video between them.

      @jpm5205 2 роки тому

      I do this! Haha. I'm completely comfortable going meterless and shoot without referencing my MR-4 meter about half the time. The times when I do use it, it's preferable to me versus a M6/P meter for the following reasons:
      First and most important - you can meter without bringing the camera to your eye. If I want to meter in challenging changing conditions, my MA stays by my waist around my neck. I can easily look down meter my scene, scale focus, then either shoot from the hip or quickly bring to my to eye to frame without "bruising" the scene. If you meter with an M6/P you have to look through the viewfinder pointing at the subject. Shoot like a spy not a paparazzi.
      Second - The MR-4 meter is coupled to the shutter speed. It makes exposure adjustments very easy compared to hand held or other hotshot meters.
      Third - The MA like the M3, M2, M4 is designed to be used with this meter. People ask "why is the shutter speed dial smaller and different?" They could have made the MA with the MP dial, but the didn't. They used the classic notched meter-coupled dial. It's how the systems was designed to be originally intended to be used. To me, a black chrome MA with a black paint MR-4 meter is the sexiest camera you can have.

      Congrats! If you go with the vintage ones, just make sure you get one with good glass, as they are prone to ageing badly after this long. But if money was no object I'd say get the new Summicron. For me, most Leica lenses are out of my budget, and I quite enjoy the look from my Zeiss Sonnar 50. I also just reviewed the new Thypoch Eureka 50, which I quite liked and will continue to use.

    It's difficult to quantify the difference between a photo shot on film and the same photo - shot at the same time - with a digital camera, but there IS an aesthetic difference between them. Try shooting members of your family or close friends with a roll of Kodak Portra 160 film. Compare those photos with your digital photos. You'll see.

    I like the chrome black much better than the black paint, not really into the whole brassing bs, and the lack of branding all over the place make this one a really nice looking camera for my taste, the only thing I don't like about the M-A is the fact that under the leatherette there is actually a covered whole for the battery, Leica used the same body frame for both the M-P and the M-A and I didn't like the fact the the battery whole was so poorly covered, doesn't show in most M-As but is there and it show in some

    Hi Hashem, Does you’re copy of the Leica MA have what feels like some give where the Leica MP would’ve had the battery door? On the other hand, everything in M-A is metal and it is fascinating like that.

      @@knife-wieldingspidergod5059 I am not implying a "need" at all. For me, it's more about spending on something that I use heavily to give me the optimal experience for the way I do that (and it's actually gone up in value since I bought it). The way that I use the Leica, the QL17 wouldn't do the job in many cases. It's too much to explain why in detail, but that is my situation!
