In this video I'm giving a introduction to quilting with rulers on my Bernina 779QE.
Quilting with rulers is so much fun, but can feel intimidating at the same time. I still feel a little bit nervous before I start on a new quilt.
I love that there is so much to learn. Every quilt brings new challenges. And every quilt learns me something. So let's see what quilting this Sugaridoo Bernina QAL quilt will bring us!

Thank you so very much. Because of COVID 19 I do not have access to a long arm. I just quilted a full size quilt on my Bernina and I decided to RELAX and ENJOY the quilting. Many, many crooked lines, many, many weird stitches. My quilt is finished and I am HAPPY. Thank you so much for the reality check, if I want perfection I could Hand Quilt my quilts 🤣ha! ha!

I just love that you show the real process of learning to quilt with mistakes and all! It gives us the inspiration to let go and have fun. In the end, the mistakes will disappear after you wash the quilt and it gets wrinkled... in my experience. Thank you for sharing that with us! :)

Dear Irene, thanks for showing your miss steps.....imperfections! Years ago my quilting teacher Betty called our miss steps .....the ‘Gods Eye’. I think it’s about the joy in creating. I have been sewing clothing and quilts for years and not one project was perfect but I have found joy and satisfaction in every project. My Danish grandmother taught me to sew when I was 5 years old. (Im 68yo and going strong). I’m so grateful she shared her knowledge with me.

This was great to watch! I have a few rulers, but I haven’t tackled this step yet! I have had a long-armed quilter do mine and they look so good! I know I can’t compete with her work! I need to just try it on a smaller quilt! Thanks for showing your imperfections , too!

I love that you are showing your quilting, what could be considered imperfections and all. I am a beginning quilter and am about to free motion quilt my 15th quilt. You are encouraging me to keep at giving ruler work a try. I've done mostly meandering and straight line quilting. You are right - it makes me happy! We all need good doses of happiness these days. Thank you for your very encouraging videos.
Thank you Irene for giving such inspiration to try machine quilting with rulers and free motion quilting. Looks like we’ll be getting a workout just by machine quilting this large quilt. It’s good to have a plan and be free to change it up if needed. Happy Quilting!

Totaling new at Machine quilting. Very good at hand quilting thou. So again thank you for doing this showing confidence that we all can do this.

Dear Irene. Im a beginner. Working on my fourth Project and I am always a litle nervous about the quilting. My seams are not always that constant as I would like them to be. Sometimes the upper thread seems to come down under my quiltsandwich. Do you change the tension of your upper thread? Thanks for showing us your process of quilting and not struggling with little "faults".
Thank you for showing us that it’s okay for less than perfect. This helps me to think about going for it. I’ve only used a walking foot so far.

Hi Irene I have a Janome sewing machine I was wondering if the Bernina ruler would work with my machine I have a ruler foot but find it difficult to get the rulers as most get posted from the USA and they become too expensive once they arrive in the UK
Wish I could see you in person and give you a big hug and congratulations on your baby girl! Is she lucky to have a mom who can sew all those cute clothes for her and quilt. You are a real blessing in this Covid19 time, so thank you many times. I also appreciated your newsletter via email that reminded us about just doing something (sending a card, finishing a quilt,etc) and letting go of waiting for the "perfect" moment. Joy to you and your family from this ancient 70 year old farm girl.
You have to have a special foot for rulers?
For inspiration and pattern, not only Angela Walters but also Lori Kennedy and Leah Day, they have free patterns and picture tutorials online.
You look a little low in your seat compared to the extension table. Is being low work for you?
For quilting gloves I use garden gloves
I don’t see on the Bernita blog the row images for us to trace our quilt patterns on to make sure we like them before we quilt them.

The hardest part is still matching hand speed to foot pedal speed.
??????? You didn't talk about layering the sandwich pieces when doing quilt-as-you-go method. Are you doing it the same as with big quilts? How many inches extra batting and backing are you using for each of the three sections?????

@@porchsitandknit8532 no she doesn't. She tells how much backing to buy for the three sections but not how much bigger the batting should be than the front, or how much bigger the backing should be than the batting. Depending on the method of quilt as you go she is going to have us do, it makes a differnce in how we sandwich now
Oh I see now that it’s the backing she gives measurements for. She does say how much backing you need, and the measurements. I’m thinking the batting should be around that same size?
She did a video last week and sandwiched the quilt on the floor. Watch that one.
@@ShadowMoonFarms I know. But that was for a whole quilt. I'm asking her if there is any special measurements of batting and background we need for doing the 3 section quilt as you go method she is going to use. When we put these parts together we need to have it right, not too much, not too little

It is great to see you quilting on a regular machine. To me computer programmed quilting just seems like cheating. I would rather just go buy a quilt than do that.
I love that you are taking us on your journey of learning to do ruler work. We often place so many expectations on ourselves and think things should be perfect right off the bat. What we don't realize is the "experts" have spent years perfecting their skills. I still struggle with rulers. Angela Walters is my fmq hero. I've learned so much from her fmq tutorials but there is one video of hers I would highly recommend. I love learning this but I think your videos could be shorter...I kind of get bored befor the end
