"What’s funny is [that] I’m 37, and when you start playing music, night after night, from decades ago, you start to reflect on who you were when you were younger and the things you wrote music about. A lot of what we write music about is the uncertainty of being young, and trying to figure out who you are in the world, and what it’s going to be like when you grow older, and who it is you’re going to find, right? That’s what all of these songs are about-that’s what this song is about. It’s really hard when you’re young and you’re like, ‘This is never gonna work; I’m never gonna figure this out.’ And then one day you just do. And for me, I did when I got married. My wife helped me through everything. So now, when I play these songs-and she’s six months pregnant, by the way-all I think about is, ‘I’m so glad I don’t have to feel this way anymore.’ It’s a really great feeling. I never have to worry about finding someone to date ever again in my entire life. So here is to all of you finding that person in your life, and never having to worry about your life being an analogy for dying in a shipwreck, like this song is."
What you’ve shared is so honest and true. It’s simple in retrospect but you just don’t know until you do. Marry someone that completes the parts you know you lack🖤
I love this because his speech gives the song a new, aged context. It's no longer about being in love with someone who doesn't love you. In this context, it's about never wanting to let go of the person you love because they've given you what you've been looking for all these years. The studio version is about wanting to die young because the person you're in love with doesn't want you. This version is about not wanting to experience life without the person you love because you can't live without their love.
jesse put a lot of heart into this rendition. thank you jesse for making such cathartic music that has changed my life forever. brand new has been my favorite band for over a decade now (man i'm old). i'm glad to see you have found happiness in your life :)
Ugh he's my favorite. I'm 20 and so confused with life, with college and family and relationships.. His music speaks for me though. I even have a tattoo on my arm that says "this is the end" and has a picture of a man and woman staring at each other confused and hurt, while a shipwreck is happening behind them. It's bad ass. I love you Jesse!
i went to this exact brand new concert in 2015 when i was 13. i have no recollection of the concert other than that flower pole and all the people smiling at me bc i was so young. all the footage i recorded (which was a lot) was all lost. i never backed it up, i posted it on instagram but i deleted all of the posts. the phone i recorded it on was from 5 years ago - that thing is gone. i have no memory of this concert or the songs, and this was the only clip of it i could find. play crack the sky is my favorite brand new song of all time. i'm so glad this clip is on youtube. i'm 18 now and i just started listening to all of my old albums due to covid-19 (i bet you ppl in 2015 could never have predicted this...) and i fell in love with brand new all over again. at the time when i went to their concert, they weren't my favorite band and i only knew their most popular songs. i only went because all of my other fav bands weren't on tour anytime soon. and i'm so grateful i did, that i was able to see jesse and all of them live, just once, because i dont think i'l ever have that chance again. even if i can't remember it, i remember his voice and i have this video. thank you for posting this. i'm vehemently against tattoos but reading through the comments i think i might get one. i think i need to: im a deceased writer, and jesse is reigniting my flame for it. i'll brainstorm my favorite lyric. i can't stop sobbing, but seriously, i can't thank myself enough for randomly deciding to go to this concert. it's crazy how such a dumb, mindless thing you will catch yourself being so grateful for later on, and i'm proud of myself for staying alive. that's it.
Love his opening monologue, especially considering Jesse rarely talks about the meaning of the band's music. Really puts into perspective the stories they are trying to tell through their songs. Thanks for posting.
Can you not be an asshole for 5 seconds? I didn't video anything else this entire show and I had my phone clutched to my chest bc the crowd was so intense. I didn't look through my phone during this, I didn't even know he'd be in the frame tbh. I uploaded this so other fans could listen to what was said, not to make a video production.
+Megan Harris it's a little annoying as a request but there's no harm in it really. Like, to be honest I also prefer having a full size video. he didn't personally attack your cinematography. xD seriously though I couldnt give two shits about anything but that awesome ass speech at the beginning

This comment definitely hit me. I wish I was older so that I could have gotten to experience this AMAZING music with others.

I've been listening to brand new since my freshman year of high school. It's been a wonderful, long emotional journey. This speech touched my soul

I’m really glad I got to see this before everything went to shit.
This is utterly, magnificently perfect.
I was here, day after my birthday, and I loved it.

One of my favorite brand new songs. Amazing footage of this. Thank you for upload, Megan.
It was such an amazing show, I've watched a few of these and this one is by far the best quality. Can hear everything perfect.
Awesome quality, thanks!
This video is perfect! Thank you so much for it. It was by far the best part of the awesome show they played. My girlfriend and I had an amazing time!
Amazing quality! Thanks for this video. I have been with Brand New since 01'. Never made a song that I wasn't touched by. Love these guys!
Thank you so much for this video.
No problem! Glad I was able to catch this and share it with everyone!

Knock on wood, Lacey. There are quite a number of reasons you could become single again and be down here with the rest of us :P
