I owned this identical car back in 1981-83 . Fond memories! I was working as a apprentice auto painter when I bought it used. The paint was flat when I bought it. I did a thorough paint job on it including the wheels back then using DuPont Centari acrylic enamel then wet sand and clear using basf Diamont. It looked like liquid glass! I had Trim-Line 3M replace the stripes. I still wish I never sold it! Lots of memories!
So 1979, no V8 car could be sold in CA with a manual transmission, that part is correct. However, they were built at Van Nuys for export only. This car was one of those. It was ordered by a guy in Chicago, spent a year or so there, and returned to Southern Cal for the rest of time until I bought it. Because it was in Chicago, the dealers usually added Zbart protective coatings to all of the cars. It'll be pretty safe in weather. It has been a garage queen for about 40 years.
The standard transmission was not offered in California...the Turbo-Hydramatic 300 was required there! I guess manual transmissions were outlawed in California for a time, right?
