    Stretch.
Stretch every morning before shift and Stretch after shift. Stretch on days off, stretch when coming off break. Goes a long way.

My favorite part of the video is when you said God has put it on your heart to share this info. I am a God fearing man who’s devoted to the Lord. Yesterday when I was on my third day (ever) of being an order selector, I had a silly thought to search UA-cam for “order selector tips.” I say silly because I didn’t expect to find much, but here you are. I’m sure it was the Holy Spirit who gave me that idea.

I work at the Walmart 6099 DC. And it was by no means easy for me to get good.

Another thing. Each selector has their own way of selecting. The advice you can get from the best selectors, build it with your own technique at the same time. Listening and doing what one person say, will hold you back a little. Using cardboard slip sheets on your pallet will stabilize the cases and it takes just one second to place it on top on a even base vs wasting 2 or 3 minutes wrapping it throughout the trip. When I learned, my issues came from stacking. Now i easily walk a 120. A warehouse deals with so many customers. You might get the same trip twice a day or even more. When you select the same thing, you stack the same way and you get paid by touching a case one time. Through everything I just said, it's mental. This job is not physical at all. 80% mental, 20 % physical. I don't take breaks sometimes. If i'm having a good day, those 10-15 minutes will be added to my selecting time on that trip.

MrAUFANATIC Great advice. I’m 3 months in at Sysco and like most people I didn’t fully take the time to get my builds down solid. I just cared about hauling ass and making it work. Now I’m having to slow it down a bit to make sure that my build is while being expected to hit 100%. I linger in the 94-99% range at the end of the week. Hopefully it’ll click soon before I hit my 6 month mark for my probation period and start getting those incentives.

You've been told this your whole life but this is where it really matters. Bend at the legs not your back. Better your legs get a little sore amd tired then to continously bend at the back amd damage yourself in the long term. Always stay square with your products instead of twisting.

  • @teknoah03
    @teknoah03 Рік тому +14

So many good points in here. Whatever you do take pride in it and have fun. You can always learn something from someone whether they are slower or faster than you.
-Watch and observe… See what the faster guys than you are doing, how they are stacking certain cases.
-Knowing the orders/customers will also help you out a lot too since you can prepare better for what cases you are going to get so that you will be more efficient.
-TRY to only touch your case once, rearrange and set up your build better only when you are stuck behind people and not doing anything anyways.
-Learn how to build before you run. Utilize the training/probation period wisely. Don’t go in there running like a headless chicken just because you want to automatically be one of the top performers, it’ll haunt you later when you are expected to hit 100% and you are getting the big boy non training orders.
-Last but not least don’t be an as%hole, if you are kind to people they’ll more than likely return the favor. For example, stick to either one side and don’t ride the middle, allow people to pass if you have a lot of cases and they are trying to go through. Once you’ve established good relationships with your co workers it’ll make your day go by a lot smoother.

I used to select in the freezer with Savealot , I used to talk to one of the guys that topped out over there , ask him his little tips and tricks. (This particular guy was one of the down to earth ones , most of the high seniority badass guys are stuck up.) He helped me alot while I selected , I ended up throwing 400s and still do whenever I have to select. Kind of the main fundamentals he said where never touch a box more than once , stay on the same side of the pallet as you're picking, use slip sheets when you have a flat surface , ECT. Also learning what boxes/product matches up helps , like one was two of this box is equal to this other.

You’re right, listening is key. I’ve been a selector at frozen foods in Publix for two and a half months now and the best things I’ve picked up is to listen to others no matter what level you’re at. I’m actually really starting to enjoy selecting and I think it’s mostly because of the freedom and I the people I work with. Some of the top selectors in the freezer pulling over 180% blow my mind. Sometimes I tell myself it’s impossible, but it’s really not.

Having a 6ft. tall order thats 3,000-5,000 lbs wobbling over is a nightmare. Wrap it as you pick and you can still hit well above 100% while safely selecting. Plus, no breakages or things falling off. And once you finish, it's ready to go on the truck. Labeled and everything.

I literally can not figure out how they do it and i feel like i move just as fast as those guys. Equipment i believe has a lot to do with it and knowing your warehouse. I can gain a few minutes by skipping by isles but lose by wrapping my pallets. Chase assignments are nice. Any order under 170 i can kill it. when it gets to 220 i struggle with the time they give. Idk if it will help anyone , but currently whatever side I have to pick my item from that’s the side I put the item at on my pallet( save time from walking around the pallet) heavy items in the front light items at the back so the heavy will support the lighter items. Also put your pallet jack close to the item you got to pick so you want have to walk a distance to get to your pallet , the closer the pallet the quicker you can put it on there and move forward to the next pick.

Memorizing the shape of the product in the slot n the customer is they key to stacking. You wanna try to touch that product 1 time, from the slot to your pallet. The customer gonna order the same things, just in different amounts. Once you learn that, your building the pallet the same way every time. Key to making money is only touching that product 1 time so don't drop product on your pallet cause you gonna have to fix it. I'm 42 yrs old n at 185 to 220 n hour from knowing the customer, stacking a solid pallet n touching the product 1 time. Good luck n get that paper...

I noticed a big problem I do is re handle my cases man but to be truthfull I feel like having a good stack is very important, cause if it ain't sturdy , then it'll fall when I turn isles, resulting in me restacking anyways. Is handling cases really holding me back from getting a higher rate?

We use stickers n I take a minute to look at the stickers n rearrange the order I see fit to building the pallet the most efficient way. I've been doing it since paper pick tickets n it's second nature to me. I can look at the stickers for a couple minutes n knowing the customer, I'll already no what the pallet is going to look like before I start. I'm 42 n still run circles around guys half my age, but I don't run, lol.

Stacking is your most powerful tool in order selecting. Learn to stack and master your warehouse before you start running high percentages. Knowing how to stack like a pro makes the job easier. You can WALK a 100% at any warehouse by working smart and stacking smart. Plus cardboard is your best friend. - I'm at the end of my career to man. I made really good money since I was 18 order selecting. Now I'm in my mid 20's and walking away from it for good, no matter what!, in about 6 months.

To the younger generation here's my tip of the day, do the exact same thing every day, get better at your personal. Everyone's is different.
I consistently do the same thing everyday I'm pretty fast on my feet and I remain on one side of the aisle the entire time. I don't need to zigzagger drive like a maniac.
I'm taller so I feel sometimes I kind of have the advantage because I can almost reach the other side of the aisle to grab a case, which is good. But not for the short guys, if you are a shorter guy you will definitely need to rely on your equipment and your footwork, so stay away from drysides!! Work in the cold and lol !!

Hey Dee, thanks for the inspiration. After being at UNFI for 17 years now moving on to Sysco, its difficult re-learning about different system and types of prduct. I love the job. Picking cases doesn't bother me at all. The biggest obstacle is impatient loaders. I get that they and the drivers are waiting on new hires like myself. But its discouraging and stressful. Even the supervisor told me to SLOW DOWN and LEARN the process and flow of the warehouse. I want to (and going to) be a successful selector. I may not be a 115% but I will do my best. How do I deal with the impatient loaders?

I guess the loader snitch on me cuz of how I stacked my shit. So he told me to slow the fuck down. Stacked properly is the GOAL. So I slow down a bid and he’s right. I’m now at 60% but my stacking is legit. Ain’t bad for a rookie. This job is hard labor, heavy lifting, bending and it can fuck up your mind set when things don’t goes right. Just relax, breath, walked. Be smart and think ahead. I’m using the talkman system. Wonder if anyone use it and is there any cheats to save time?

i've been struggling with this almost a year, i still have partial ocd as an adult.. the expectations after 'progression' are rough, but maybe i can offer some objective advice.. they've never paid anyone for 'good pallet' they pay for 'put case'.. any company or facility i've ever worked in, vocollect does not afford time for rearranging cases.. products are not going to level off, they aren't going to fill layer, and on occasion you're going to have to put something askew or overhang an inch or two..
1 stabilize your corners- they can't be lower than the other cases (usually) or things will slough off, and yes, sometimes they give you things backwards so you'll have to move a taller case to the edge, this is the Only time you should retouch a case, don't stress over it just suck it up and move on. 2 stay level (mostly) - don't focus on an entire layer, just keep similar things close to eachother, when you try to stagger on top of them, it's mostly gravity that's going to stabilize your pallet. 3 avoid catastrophic failure - my first two points make it seem like you can throw anything anywhere and it will all even out, that simply isn't true.. you can't worry about Every little case, but at the same time just be mindful that you aren't haphazardly throwing things on your cart without thinking At All, for example, you can't Always stagger all your cases, but you Will know if you've Upstacked an entire corner of your pallet or if you Kept building unlevel layers to the point where you end on a top heavy run and your pallet wants to crumble outward.. 4 time killers that seem like necessity - don't clean up after everyone else, if you use cardboard between layers don't scavenge too much throughout the day, if you shrink wrap honestly try to only do it once on the more troublesome pallets and only if you Really have to, stay close to your pallet and grab More than Once Case (i personally don't believe in this but honestly it's a huge deal, if you can Safely handle more than one case, Do It)
lastly, this is the internet and i'm an adult, i'm not going to fib you.. the job is difficult for some but it is doable, so challenge yourself.. don't aim for 115% in my personal experience people hitting above that cheat zz you're probably a good worker, hit 102, you'll get even better.. i know a girl, she can do almost anything, she hit % right out of progression and she is literally the only reason i show up to work anymore lol.. don't get discouraged, and don't be a perfectionist, just blow it out of the water.. also, some managers suck but they're people too, every once in awhile just let them know you're trying, i don't know how your facility is but if you figure out what tasks you're good at they might be able to focus the majority of your workload on that until things mellow out?
sry for the book zz g'luck

Pallets will fall at times Brother!!! The key is to evolve!!! Learn what not to do and also what works for you! Develop a system. Ask yourself , “ what am I doing early in my day to have a high percentage?” Also, “ what am I doing different that causes my percentage to fall?” Once you recognize this, you will overcome percentage decreases!!!

Our routes are the same. Can pick each load the exact way without much variance.. picked in the chill at McLane and could bang out 1000 in 4 hours.. we dont get paid off cases done, only time clocked in. Only did that when I wanted to leave early. Top pay is 4 years with the company and almost $23/h.. cant complain. No longer in the chill, not as good in the main DC..

Came across this video. If you don't mind me asking, What is your career now? Did you stay in the industry and moved on from selecting doing other jobs? Or do you have a completely different career now? I ask because I've been in this industry going on 16 years. I was a selector for many years but I do other jobs now. I want to to do something else but I can't think of anything solid to get into that is going to offer me what I get now. Meaning my Annual salary, Benefits etc. I am a family of 5 so I can't quit and do just anything.
