I remember Joe telling the story of Kobashi being scared nobody will know him, and it looks like despite Joe's reassurance, he was still surprised by the reception he's got. What a humble king.
so according to what i've heard Kobashi thought since he was the foreigner wrestling the top guy in ROH he'd be the heel and he was truly not expecting a warm reception. So his look of bewilderment and appreciation when the streamers were thrown warms my heart Kobashi is a true legend respected around the entire world
sometimes bewilderment and appreciation can be an awesome experience when wrestlers from other companies like in Japan and the legends who were there come over they get very amazing show of respect by the fans and that' what counts the most. Kobashi and others like Liger, Kenta, Misawa and Muta to name a few would've had the same reaction knowing how legendary they were in how they shaped the wrestling sport in Japan and fight with code of honor similar to how ROH does.
@Asad Fahiem that's because kobashi could barely walk at this point his body was so worn down. If it was joe vs 1990 kobashi it would have been way better
@Asad Fahiem Lack of big moves? Joe got dumped on his head as violently as possible several times with half Nelson suplexes, bout as big a move there is impact-wise, it was awesome, I hate you
The moment Joe and Kobashi shook hands in the pre start, we had no idea we were gonna a super awesome match in ROH and one of the greatest matches in the career of both wrestlers.
The best part is that Kobashi was intent on being the heel in this match because he didn't think the fans would know who he was despite Joe assuring him before the match that they absolutely would because of his legendary status even then and you can see the genuine surprise on his face when they chanted his name and reacted exactly how Joe said they would. The match is still one of my favorites even now and dare I say is one of the best I've ever seen period and I'm not just saying that as a huge fan of both of these guys, like the fans even said "Thank you" in Japanese to Kobashi after the match
It’s crazy that he was scared that people wouldn’t know who he was. If he went say to WWE then sure, most fans wouldn’t know, but these fans were so respectful and incredible. In USA, Canada, Japan, Mexico and UK anytime a foreign talent, especially a super popular one comes to wrestle fans are super appreciative. I love that.
Man, I remember being there for the Kobashi match, legit one of the hottest crowds ever. Haven’t experienced anything like that since Omega/Danielson at the stadium
As a fan of pro wrestling for 32 years now, I'm fucking ashamed I never saw this match before. But never late than never, what a masterpiece. Brutal simplicity at its finest
Oh wow, Joe vs. Kobashi. I'm not complaining, but I think you could get more views outta this if you separated all the matches. Joe/Kobashi should be its own video IMO
Na they took all the greats who left ROH and made a 3 best match tribute theres one for joe ,cm punk .brian danielson, el generico and aj styles wish adam cole was next but im glad they did it the way they did i wis there was a little commentary during the joe v kenta match but it was still great
What’s there to say, Kenta Kobashi vs Samoa Joe is the best match of all time. Purely in the execution of its simplicity. Kenta’s body was so broken from the legendary wars of attrition between Mitsuhara Misawa and Toshiaki Kawada in AJPW and later PW Noah that he was limited from a lot of his high spots. But how he was able to work around those limitations and just not only work the crowd but work with Joe so beautifully and brutally with only a set of Chops and Suplex’s is pure genius and shows true understanding of the art that is Professional Wrestling. Kobashi and Joe told a fucking story in that ring on October 1st 2005, 17 years ago. And on that night two Warriors fought in the war to end all wars and while Joe won the battle, the war was won by the legend himself. Thank you Samoa Joe and Thank You Kenta Kobashi for giving us the best match of all time. You were the heroes we deserved and needed on that night.

The ref counts way too fast when Joe wrestles Kobashi. Nuts how ROH was able to get legends to wrestle when they didn’t have a TV deal. This was the best era of wrestling with ring work. ROH was a who’s who of top unsigned, and foreign talent. TNA got a deal on spike, and was becoming a respected alternative, the ruthless aggression era was in full swing, and NOAH was the shit. ROH at this time was what started today’s style of American wrestling, and was filled with today’s best.
To think that Kobashi intended to work heel in that match because he assumed the crowd wouldn’t like him because he’s a foreigner. Thank goodness Joe convinced him otherwise
