@@kingjellybean9795 Don't be so harsh on them. They were a bunch of teenagers who, for the most part, had no choice but to go into the army. The Wehrmacht was largely an army of conscripts. These soldiers were just as young, just as scared, and just as motivated as our soldiers were. Most of the Wehrmacht soldiers didn't care about politics. They just did the best they could for Germany, not necessarily for Hitler.
As far as the SS goes, that's different. They were not army, they were a police organization, much like the Gestapo. You are probably referring to the ones who ran the concentration camps. Those camps had nothing at all to do with the Wehrmacht. They were completely operated by the SS. Those guys were there voluntarily and were insanely loyal to the Nazi party.

These men and women are truly the “Greatest Generation”. They did nothing less than save the world. My Dad fought in the Pacific against the Japanese. He was in the US Navy and flew carrier based missions in TBF Avengers as a radio gunner and bombardier. After the war and after a stint as a professional baseball player he rejoined the military. He said that he never wanted to takeoff from or land an airplane on a boat again so he decided to join the Army. He flew missions against the North Koreans in the US Army Air Corps and continued his career in the US Air Force fighting the North Vietnamese from a desk in Washington DC and different stations around the World. He retired after 25 years of service to his country. He is now resting with honor at a National Cemetery near our home. I’m very proud to call him my Dad and I think of him every day. God bless him and all who have served our great country.

0:30 It was my good fortune to have worn one of those caps with the Parachute & Glider patch on it... if only but for a year. It was replaced by the maroon beret for the other 2 years in which i'd served. In his day, rumor had it that a couple of siver dollars would be sewn intact behind that patch for a couple a reasons. To aide in a brawl when gripped at the coins opposite end & setting the weight of the said coin, or coins, end into a black jack wailing action. The other reason was for emergency bus or taxi fare to get you back to the base on... after all the drinking money you had was expended.

But think about this. They are all victims of the circumstances. Soldiers then and sports athletes today. It is not their choise to make wheter they are made heroes.
If you have ever been in the military you know that you don’t fight to get medals. You fight for a cause and for your country and your brothers and sisters in arms. And also because your told to. Nowadays ”heroes” are different because times are different. And these kinda men we are to thank for the world we are living in now. It is better because of them. It is better to be a hero in sports than a hero in a war. War has never done any good in the world. In war there is only two outcomes bad and worse. And the soldiers that have fought in a war know this. They have lost friends and family because of it. They had to kill other human beings and they will carry that burdain to the grave with them. If you’ve never done it yourself you can’t understand how heavy that burdain is. THERE ARE NO HEROES IN WAR. ONLY VICTIMS. Show this to any veteran and ask if there are any heroes in war. Sure there are acts of heroism but it is not the same thing. Heroes are a good example of stupidity. People don’t think things true they want to believe everything. So they watch sports, movies, soap operas and so on and so on. It is all a lie. We are a lie. And especially media is nothing but a lie. It lives on lies.
And if you read this far than good for you. Think about things. XD i’m outta here!

You should know that this gratitude that is shown here is still the norm here. Most people over here are as thankful as ever to these men for what they did and show it every year in great memorial ceremonies.
Do not mistake any problems people may have with the current behaviour of some Americans for ingratitude towards those that fought for our freedom 75 years ago.The two aren't related and should not ever be. It dishonors the memory.

It is a blessing to know that people like these, who honor our US (and allied) heroes, still exist out there. If only my grandfather had lived to see or experience any of this kind of thing. He was there, too. I had a great-grandfather there, though I did not ever get to meet him or learn any of his history. My grandfather had been a WWII and Korean War Veteran. My father and uncle, along with my step-father, were all multi-tour Vietnam Vets. I know that they are all still honored by family who share who they had been, though that just is not the same... it is just that, sadly, most of the younger generations do not care. Not for those who protect today and will protect tomorrow, and certainly not for the ones who protected yesterday and back to so long ago. I will never forget. But one day I will be gone, too. Who will remember then? Names on a wall or memorial... so overwhelming. There just is not enough thanks to go to them all. Thank you to this community for not forgetting, and for honoring those who could come. Too bad some in their own nation have short memories. ~Peace!

My dad was a WWII decorated combat vet and POW. My mom was a first generation German-American who also lost a cousin fighting as a Panzer Grenadier in Russia. All veterans whether Americans, Germans and Russians need to be respected...most of them were drafted at a very young age and really were so young and really knew nothing about fighting and yet they were sent to fight and die. We need to respect them....and realize their lives had value. WWII is over 70 years behind us now...we need to heal those wounds. My dad who was wounded as a combat vet in Anzio and who became a POW eventually made a good friend with a German soldier who emigrated to the US and who became a dedicated American citizen who loved this land too.

If those brave men that fought for our republic knew how things would turn out they would have murdered Allen Dulles! I'm sure they remember the speech Eisenhower made about the military industrial complex. Those men didn't want to know. They just wanted to live in peace.
Much respect to you men of the golden generation. Thank you for your service.

My grandfather was a ship gunner on mine sweeper during a battle in the Pacific. My dad told me he got a piece of metal in his leg after a plane crashed into the side of his ship, he just ripped it out with his knife and wrapped it up with some clothes. My dad asked him, why didn’t you file for a Purple Heart? His reply was “we were busy”.

I'm almost 63 years old & I feel very fortunate to have known a few WW Two vets over the years who shared parts of their stories with me. One of them was my maternal grandfather who fought in the Pacific in the U.S. Navy & most were friends of my dad. What they went through & did not only for our country but the world should NEVER be forgotten!
