As a retro PC and game enthusiast, i really wish there was a way to save those old monitors, CRT TVs, computers etc.
Especially that cartridge of super mario world for SNES.

I’ve scrapped thousands of those monitors. 15”, 17” & 21” crts. the copper wire at the end of the tubes all add up. Bought me lots of cigarettes and beer with the money 😎

As a student at a school, why don't they just refurbish them . All they can surly take the equipment out of there for more equipment.

Since windows 7 was published in 2009, and the computer was complaining about corrupted files, it was probably a glitch.
Anyway, the school is still closed for more than 10 years now...

this is probably a controversial statement for some, but i hate the culture of destroying or stealing from abandoned places like these
some of the best parts of an abandoned structure is that it’s not only essentially frozen in time (save for the natural dilapidation), but you get the entire building to yourself for you to explore
taking and destroying everything in it just ruins the experience for everyone else, and i don’t understand why one would waste their time doing so
i appreciate that you take the measures you do to protect the integrity of the building, lord knows there are people out there who’d love to rip it down

I'm a Michigan native & this just breaks my heart! Why didn't the people iin charge distribute these supplies to local small businesses starting out or low income families that can't even afford furniture! The people these donated items could have helped is endless! Not to mention, taking the money for heating & electricity for well over a decade could have been turned into grants for providing heat & electricity to countries homes shelters! This is why Detroit is in worse shape debt wise than before its 2014 "wiped clean" bankruptcy!

For anyone wondering why power and heat was still on they were probably doing an asbestos abutment on the building (asbestos is a harmful material that causes disease in lungs if breathed in) that is why there is debris that look like beaver grounds of paint and why the walls,floors and roofs are scraped down in most of his videos I highly recommend if you are going to explore old buildings make sure you wear proper protection because if he is not wearing a mask and half of the roof is scraped meaning the whole abait meant was not complete therefore there is likely asbestos in the building. They were probably having the heat and power on so the asbestos can get off the roof and floors easier so they will probably tear down that building very soon once the building is safe.

the building is painted with latex paint and the from heat and cold it causes the paint to stretch and crack then peel and fall off

It’s so sad to see all of those retro pc’s and monitors just rotting away. I hope someone is able to take them so other people can take care of them
The power and heat are on for a reason. In order to maintain it, you need the hvac working. Otherwise, the pipes would freeze (and burst) in the winter. You also want the fire suppression system to still work, in case of a problem. But they also keep the buildings alarm system active. Thats to alert Detroit Public School Police (yes, they have a small police force) that there's an intruder on site.

Looking for this comment. It shows who doesn't live in areas where it freezes. Think heating is expensive? Wait until you see the bill from exploded pipes after they freeze.
Lots of the tools and equipment can be recycled or used for other schools and places. So sad to see it just sit there.

I am suprised that any of those PCs booted at all. One would thi k that either rodents or roaches ruined them from the inside out by now especially the ones still on standby mode since they were generating heat that bugs like.
It’s too bad. There is so much stuff that is still good and could be salvaged and used.
The building itself though would take a lot of work at this point.
For a building with heat and therefore not subject to temperature changes, it has significantly deteriorated more than I would have expected. It seems like there is water that has gotten in and wreaked havoc on the ceilings.
I feel those steam tunnels are not supposed to be steam tunnels. I am thinking that there is a leak in the heating system somewhere and it’s pumping out steam. That would explain the ceiling and rotting floor.
This building would possibly be in better condition if the heat WASN’T on. The fun thing about that is then it wouldn’t be costing thousands of dollars a year for running nothing! It is a total waste to be running the heat for what the building is now.

Personally. And this is my take… I think those computers should be taken out of teh school and distributed to Vintage Computer fans. There is a GOLD MINE of old computers there.
All of those old Crt monitors are going for a pretty penny on Ebay compared to a modern HDR high refresh rate and resolution monitor you can get under $400

This would be heavenly find for the homeless- shelter with power and heat, especially during the winter and rainy days
But there is chemicals everywhere to decompose and destroy the building and instillation stuff would be everywhere and you could breathe it in

Wow incredible document I find it sad that it would be left empty like that there's so many use for such building emergency shelter potential housing short term there's such a problem with housing when it concerns all over the place United States and Canada it's a shame to see a building like that go to waste all the computers are still useful it doesn't mean because it's Windows 7 you cannot do anything with it there's still a lot of things you can do even some dish machines you can even put probably Windows 10 in there probably a bit slower however they would still work do some purpose
The question is why was the school shut down apart from emergency shelter it could also be used as temporary housing just put a bunch of bunk beds in there that would be good unless they're there is a real emergency say fire you name it that's a lot of space that would be available for public use the fact that the heat is still there it's quite amazing that the heat is still on that building would be suitable for so much even the community area Community Center Library potential even emergency storage doc it even be used for emergency services emergency shelter in case there's a fire someone has to go somewhere temporarily not talking about the crackheads crackheads talking about the average person that is about the fault of the cracks biscuit potentially be a temporary housing not perfect however how much does it cost to build something new the building is already there the roof may have to be fixed then again this building's been left for like 10 plus years it's sad to see something like that go to waste the technology that was left as well when I was younger I didn't have the chance to have that technology it's sad to see the amount of waste we have hopefully this building can have a better use can it be just standing itself being degrading there has to be a better use for the community for this building it is such a waste then again I've seen in this city V video the amount of degradation that is happening in some places this place is even better maintained than some of these places out there there should be a way of saving that building for Community use

It looks like they're just in the process of taking everything away, but there's so much dirt on stuff that you know it hasn't been touched in years. The stuff in the gym seems different, as if someone has put it there more recently for scrap, because I don't think they would've piled "newer" equipment up like that at the time it closed.

these Steam Tunnels at 18:52 are the remote heating system (just like in NYC) from the central heating/power plant to heat buildings with steam, usually their pipes are/were isolated with Asbestos ! ( I hope you shaved off all beard (as good as possible) & the mask seals well (full face mask recommended, especially for slim noses) & has P3/N100 filters & you did a thorough decontamination of your self (also the suit has to deal to the mask & wrists/gloves & boots) ...
also possible Asbestos in: floor tiles, linolium, sound proofing, other pipes ( & maybe some electrical cables), paint ...
also I would suspect lead paint ... mold is very normal, especially when the roof is leaking

The heat is probably left on since city buildings get heat through steam tunnels from a centralized system, probably costs nothing to the city. Its good since heated buildings keep frozen pipes and decay down, but open steam pipes like that seen arent great. Power is probably still on for security, might be redeveloped in upcoming years.

The "steam tunnels" are just for heating and as someone else said they likely made the holes for asbestos abatement. Seeing this is detroit in many large cities you'll have a central boiler housed in a giant factory-like building (often called a "steam plant") instead of each building having its own boiler system. The steam from the central boiler is then piped throughout the city via underground pipes and into each building. I know here in Cleveland we have this type of setup and I actually know where the central boiler is. Sometimes you'll see steam coming up through manhole covers in the street and it stinks really bad. I'm not exactly sure what causes the smell but it's likely from the pipes being old and whatever contaminants are in the water before it's reaches boiling temperatures.
