Trena, my wife is dying now after her long battle with MS. You will never know how your videos have been my companion through the years. Thank you for everything! ❤️
Sure, the craftsmanship. Sure, the tradecraft. Sure, the artistry. What floors me the most, though, is the patience. I honestly don’t understand how she can be that invested for that long without becoming bored or at least, discouraged. It’s a master class in wisdom.
Girl, you meticulously cleaned, removed, restored the heck out of that trunk. Looks so good, yet retains the dings and dints of it’s life. Enjoyed the entire thing.
I thought the paper looked familiar. AT Restoration, Fixing Furniture and John's Furniture Repair contribute to the great steamer trunks coincidence of autumn 2024!
I love this so much! Im very happy that you left so much of what was original to the trunk, especially how you left the old paper section in the lid!! You are so masterful in this restoration! Well done, Trena!❤❤
This video was very pleasing. All the hiccups add so much to the journey. Glad the shop is turning out well. Looking forward to shop dog at the window. 😅
Man that clean up on the inside of that trunk was a nightmare! That must have taken many hours. Then the outside wasn't so easy either. So tedious. You have the patience of a saint. Great job!
My first reaction on the used red color for the trunk was negative, however seeing the end result I have to admit I was wrong. My compliments for the restoration.
An amazing range of skills utilized in the restoration of this trunk. I think the one that blew me away is your hand sewing the leather handles, stunning and impressive.
You got the trunk to finish out beautifully, love the colors and textures in/ on the trunk. Excellent job of relining the interior, like the fact that you left that section of original paper liner showing, that is part of the history and character of the trunk. Thanks for the video, enjoyed watching, beautiful piece. Shop is looking great, the time to get the power to the building will go quickly, you are a busy young lady, that makes time fly, so to speak.
Delays are so inevitable when it comes to builds and renos. My late husband would say that patience is it's own reward. On the positive side, the trunk looks great!
More impressive magic from John's Furniture Repair. Beautiful work. Interior work on the trunk seemed more difficult than exterior. The new shop is really looking nice. Delay may be a blessing in disguise. You have a chance to really give some thought to layout and make it perfect. I moved into my shop years ago and at this point realize I have it so loaded with stuff I'll never have the chance to "do it right'. Most major problem I have is that I really really need to seal the floor, and it will never happen.
@@johnsfurniturerepair Yes, you have some stuff that might be a challenge for most sealers. My concern is mostly oils, the concrete soaks them up like a sponge. There are some really nice and mostly impervious coatings offered by Tennant that I wish I had used.
Great job girl! The new workshop is looking good and I agree with you that things happen when they are supposed to. Every time I rushed things it never turned out right. You are looking good, pretty and healthy! God bless!
My goodness, Sweet Trena, you worked with metal, tin, wood, paper and leather on this project. You even had to do a bit of sewing. Very tedious stuff, but fun and relaxing watching this video. It amazes me to see how much work can go into a smaller object like this trunk. You have to wonder why that one piece of metal was peeled back like a sardine can! Wonderful job as usual, Trena. Shop looks wonderful!!!
It's very beautiful, the way you honor these old pieces of our history. It's always a pleasure to partake of your process. Meticulous magic. Do you ever find, when dealing with some of the older pieces, that they can sometimes fill you with a certain sadness though, at the thought of all the history that it was a part of? Like for people come and gone, living out entire lives with it in their possession, making use of it while they existed. It's like you can feel the stories of those lives are carried with the old-crafted works that have long outlasted them. As if the piece keeps all in silent memories that exist nowhere else and can never be told but can somehow be felt. I find that a really old piece or place can sometimes stir quite powerful, almost overwhelming feelings of longing to know its past, and what was going on around its span of existence. The extravagant, to the mundane. Joys, and tragedy. All would be such an elegant story were it only able to share its tales. That thought creates a mood that's equal parts beauty & sadness. Always unique to each piece or space as the experiences of the long existence that it remembers. I love thinking about things like that. I'm sure that I just sound batty to a lot of folks, but I'd have to imagine our Trena would at least comprehend what I am trying to express on some level not too far adjacent to my meaning...respectfully I say that. Anyone else relate?
You’re not batty! I feel that too. When I touch the pieces and I feel thier history in every curve and dent and crack. It is magical. And it is always a pleasure to see them smile with some time and love put in. Thankyou!❤️
OMG! I saw those other trunks you mentioned but yours is a standout and the winner for sure. I could fill it with my handmade quilts. Thanks for doing it. Your restoration techniques are the best and make it the reason I follow you. 😊❤
It came out beautifully. The maroon gives it a leather like look. Really beautifully done. I’m with you on the lines in the paper. It would drive me crazy.
I am in awe of your new workplace. It will be fantastic. I am proud of you pushing through all the bad experiences to get to the light at the end of the tunnel. You are a strong woman. It's true what they say about a woman being a teabag. She doesn't know her strength untill she lands it hot water. Amazing work on this trunk! It looks beautiful! ❤️
Truly fabulous job. It looks amazing. The attention to detail is off the charts. I also really enjoyed your choice of music, it very much fitted the process and wasn't distracting. Thank you 😊
I LOVE that you left that big paper label in the trunk!!! It would have broken my heart had you removed it. And I LOVE that you kept the original leather handle. The end result is beautiful!
Back in the early 90’s I tried my hand at restoring my girlfriend’s trunk, when I did NOT have enough experience (and still don’t have enough to do everything you did here!) what a tremendous restoration! “It’s Trena-mendous!” The shop!!! Coming along!
It is funny how many great restorers are doing steamer trunks now. I am SO EXCITED to have YOUR version, because I’ve been searching for content in order to do some justice to one from my great-grandmother. I always trust your work, so thank you, thank you, thank you!! ❤
It's all coming together Trena. The truck came out beautifully. The music when you were working on the paper inside was so pretty. Take care and thanks for bringing us along.
As a kid we fixed up an old steamer trunk. We lined the inside with a pattern paper that looked like old newspaper. The outside was painted black. We used that old trunk as a toy chest.
Wow, absolutely amazing! You never cease to please! Your work is impeccable! The trunk is gorgeous. Blessings and the shop looks beautiful. So so excited for you!!! Blessings! I hope they can bring it sooner than the end of Jan! God bless!!!
Outstanding Trena, I love what you've done. The way you progressed your design ideas as you progressed. So beautiful. I saw the other trunks and I have to say tbis is by far the best. For outstanding care and respect for the original desjgn. Respect for the animal tbat provided the leather handles. Just sublime.
Sorry Trena l missed the video the music was so beautiful and soothing l fell fast asleep when l get time i'll watch the show with the sound turned off, and anytime l can't get to sleep i'll play the music with the video turned off😂Deus benedicat.
This trunk turned out wonderful, balanced between old and new. It was good of you to take the time and effort to restore the leather handles. Too bad about that paper, and I agree you could do better yourself, with wallpaper and paste. The wheels are probably not as necessary as they once would have been, when luggage porters had to hoist them onto trains and ships and upstairs into hotel rooms or into bunkhouses. It’s fun to think of where that trunk might have gone in days past! My dad had an old army trunk, which our family used often to move our household every few months in B.C. Blessings from Manitoba 🦬
Beautiful! I admit I was a little apprehensive when you started applying the red paint, but the result is brilliant! Your client made an excellent choice.♥️
How involved did this turn out , what a awesome job you did Trena on that old beat up trunk .The new shop looks awesome ,definitively use the time to do your shop lay out the way you want it on paper first, before your locked in

I'm so glad you went with the silver rather than brass (overdosed on brass during the 1980s and 90s). I'm a sucker for black or midnight blue and aged silver. So pretty!
I’ve repaired an old trunk like this and used real wallpaper with wallpaper paste. It’s a better option and easier to work with. Also, it’s more reliable and has lasted 40+ years. Your new shop is going to be super nice 😊.
Back in the late nineties and early two thousands our shop did about two trunks a month. They are a lot of work and a lot of fun to see how they turn out. Great job.
The final lacquer finished everything so beautifully. It aged the burgundy paint, and everything just came together. I have to think that covering the cardboard panels (I recognized that paper from the other video that you mentioned) had to be easier than doing everything inside the trunk. I’m glad you kept the decorative paper that you found visible, because it looks great.

Because it is what she loves to do. Challenges only add to the experience of practicing your craft - loving your artistry.
Thankyou sir! Maybe it’s insanity lol
Lol
The red looks fantastic
Yay, it’s the best day of the week! Trena-day! 🎉

Master class in TRUST THE PROCESS, I think! The first coat of red is a perfect example. It's gorgeous.
You are right, it was a little scary at first.

You are truly a beautician of wood, leather and metal.
This came out beautifully, and made me wish I kept a trunk from my parents house. But I kept way much. Love watching you restore this. Thanks, Trena.
Thank you! 😊
At first I had my doubts.... then I came out of the ether and regained my grasp of reality and remembered this is Trena.... WOW!

A fantastic result as usual.
Great video Trena.

An amazing range of skills utilized in the restoration of this trunk. I think the one that blew me away is your hand sewing the leather handles, stunning and impressive.

I would like to have seen a little more of that. A couple of stitches to show how you stitched both sides at the same time with one needle.
I’ll get more into it next time😉
