I've had the capitol one secured card for about 7 months now and my credit score shot from 520-700 within that time. It takes way less then a year to see improvement with your credit score if the card is used the right way. By the way I kept my usage under 30% when I first got the card then I reduced the usage to 10%, hope this helps someone out there
Use the card continuously in the first 3 months but do not exceed 30% of 100%, after 3 months, reduce usage and limit to only 20% of 100% that's the best way to go from 300 to 750 in 8 months, I've read 2 books about credit cards and both cover this strategy for beginners, of course the strategy has more to it such as time, when and where to use it etc... The strategy says to always pay everything 8 days before the limit date, it's a lil bit complicated to explain because it's a little tricky but once you get it, within a year you can have a 800 credit score following that strategy and get access to some of the best credit cards and loans.

Why does this make me think of a credit card as if it was just a subscription that you wanna pay off or what you use before the renewal date and if you don't pay it before than you will get an overcharge like on your debit card but the overcharge is cumulative the longer times goes without paying it the more you'll owe? Is that sound about right? I am confused and am struggling to get a hold of what they are and why bother getting one it is so confusing and there is no simplistic explanation I feel stupid listening to all this and everyone explain Credit cards and credit.

My situation is just like Sara...and you are suggesting not to use the secured credit card more than once a month? I was told to use the credit card for purchases and set up auto pay for the whole due amount...which is what I have done. I am confused..
