DIY BOATERS!!!!! Budget Trawlers getting boat prep for the Bahamas , how I saved thousands in boat repairs. While on the hook preparing for a Bahamas crossing I adjusted Valves on Ford Lehman after finding a oiling problem with the rocker arm number 3 rocker was plugged and had to be removed and cleaned on Ford Lehman boat Engine being prepared for the Bahamas
You come a long way from watching Trawler Tom a couple weeks ago diagnosis this. Congratulations! The greatest reward is the positive feeling once you have accomplished something that before, you didn’t know how to do but thought you could do.
“If man built it, man can fix it. If another man can fix it, then so can I.”
Those are words fewer and fewer people are willing to live by today.
It’s always great to see a well-maintained boat, and people should know that adjusting the valves isn’t that hard 👍
Perhaps there's a new diesel mechanic on the horizon! Thanks you guys for the insight into the DIY boat owner's trials and tribulations. Looking forward to your Bahama adventures.
Thanks brother
Great instructional video. So much great information about what to look for to make sure your motor has what it needs to keep moving smoothly. ❤
Thanks I learned a lot on this one
Things are lookin good there Skipper, glad you decided to tackle the cleanout yourself , confidence builder and good instructional video for DIY folks. Brian over at American Diesel in Virginia is a real Lehman Guru. My go to guy for parts and advice ! Appreciate all your efforts both in front of the cam and editing behind the scenes. Now go have some fun !
Thank you have a great day.
Thank you a million times for this amazing video!!!
Well I don’t wish it on anyone, but this should prove that we can do anything we put are minds too, thank you for watching
Excellent information Captain, nice work. Yes American Diesel is awesome , Bobs diesel class was worth every penny we love our Ford Lehman. I’ll bet valve covers are being removed everywhere to check for clogged pipes.
Thanks Denny and thanks for sending the info you did
It's good to know the torque specs for the stantion bolts. You can do some permanent damage by over torquing them. Also find out about valve overlap. that is how you find TDC for each appropriate cylinder to set the valve clearance.
I just bought a Grand Banks 32 with reman American Diesel engines. Somehow the fuel return live valve got closed and filled the engine with diesel and oil! We removed 12 gallons of fluids but definitely cleaned the motor out good haha I’m not a mechanic but prior to the next oil change add a half gallon gallon of diesel in the mix and maybe it’ll flush everything good haha!
Well that might of worked LOL
Bob Smith liked Marvel Mystery oil, wouldn’t want to thin motor oil with diesel bearing failure would be your choice. Good idea to get oil analysis after that situation to be sure of no more fuel in the oil your mileage may vary
Yesss!! This is amazing footage. Great tutorial 🎉
Thank you 🙏
nice definitely love the tech stuff!
Glad you like it! Thanks Lester
I think the valve "rotator cap" is missing on #4 valve which is right beside the valve that you cleared the gunk from. All the other valves seem to have a rotator cap which fits between the top of the valve stem and the rocker arm. Video time 1:19 it is there & 1:33 it is gone and never reappears. Note how the valve adjustment screw is much lower into the rocker arm compared to the others.
Thank you will take a look
Wow, good catch.
Hell yea, this is so much better, nice work Capt👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Yes I really enjoyed that video a ton!! Nice work Captain I have ordered the workshop manuals for my Volvos..
Glad you enjoyed it!
Why didn't you just the tappet clearances in firing orders 153624? Nice engine Ford Lenham enjoyed your video trawler Tom
Do you have a video on the packing shaft ?
Such a great video! I will look out for this on my own Ford 2725e
Glad it was helpful!👍🏻🙏😉
Harbor Freight sells an inexpensive Torque Wrench. Get one and use it on thoses bolts that hold the rocker assembly. You should never do anything insde an engine without using a Torque Wrench.
Great informative video! Quick 101 question: The main bolts that were being hand-tightened, do these or other bolts have specifications for the correct torque? If yes, your ability to hand-tighten them correctly is awesome! I have a friend who is a small engine mechanic, and his skills are pretty much the same!
There is a torque spec for them, I did open them up again and torque them down to spec
Good job!
Supposed to do valve adjustment when the engine is hot I thought 🤔
Very helpful video for other DIYers. You showed & were referring to a manual for the valve sequencing and clearances. Can you tell me what is the official name of that manual & maybe a "part #" if it has one? Thanks!
It’s just the one we got with the boat. But you can buy one from American Diesel.
@@NoRegretsLifestyle Thanks. Is it an owners manual or a repair manual?
Good vid. Thanks. How did you get your engine stop solenoid to stay in place so she didn't start up while you turned the crank shaft?
You can just hold it, but didn’t bump it enough to start. Thanks for watching and God Bless you.
How can you tell if that rocker arm was clogged?
Nice Job! Less stress next time:)
You got that right! I hope I remeber for next time
What was the issue? why are you doing this? What was the symptom (customer complaint)?
Was it knocking? What prompted this repair?
Just routine maintenance found it
How did you know there was a problem with that rocker arm being plugged up? We’re you just observing the entire assembly and noticed it or was there an issue when running the engine that made you check it out?
Well done getting it fixed.
Also, where do you take the used motor oil and other fluids to discard?
I was wondering what the symptoms were, too. Didn't know if maybe he heard some 'clanking' and saw a little increase in temperature.
In a previous video, he had a mechanic adjust the valves. Then they ran the engine with the valve cover off. The lack of oil at that rocker arm hole was noticed then.
We paid a Mechanic in Keywest to adjust the valves and he found the problem. so we limped it to Marathon becasue they have a place where we can dump the oil.
That is Correct, Trawler Tom out of Key Wesr found the problem. He did not have time to fix it so we decided to try and do it ourselves and see if I could do it.
Nice torque wrench.....click click lol
How did you know it was plugged up?
Mechanic found it and told me, he didn’t have time so I did it myself
300 hrs oil change? Suppose to be 200hr
I change mine at 250 usually
Anyone know where to buy
An new valvecovergasket to this engine?
Yes right it needs one.

I have the same type of engine but mine is not marinediesel model.
It is fitted in a
new holland combine
anoides!
--- QUESTION -- How did you notice that there was a problem? Did it overheat or was there a weird noise? Seems like I would not have detected such a small issue without first looking for it.
We had a mechanic in Key West that adjusted the valves and found the problem. He was busy and not able to fix it so we decided to do it ourselves.
@@NoRegretsLifestyle ...aah.. Fair enough. Just wondered if there was a symptom that indicates this problem. I guess not. Great video I must say. Really starting to like the simplicity of these engines.
