    Missed this one!!! Great information i have a sailboat and tank has been changed and to cut cost half the size was installed. I live on the Chesapeake and you can get a boat for free with bad tanks… or a helluva discount. Seller says he is use auxiliary tank to jazz up but about worthless.

    Xlpe or cross-linked poly will last longer than the boat if not in uv or punctured by something. 50gal tank with a 12in width weighing 25lbs fits through a lot of hatches. Remove the old tank, install a new shelf, strap down the new tank and plumb it in. Moeller has been making them long enough you know they last.

    I did a tank job on a early 70's 36 GB. We cut the tanks out in pieces then built new tanks in place using sheet steel. This was back in the mid 80's and I recall the job taking about a week. We did it in the slip, brought in precut sheet metal and welded the tanks in place. I remember the price to replace was VERY expensive which wasn't an option at the time. I can't remember the cost but it would have been the cost of sheet steel + my time + beer for the helpers.
    I like the option of replacing a single tank with multiple smaller tanks. I wouldn't walk away from plastic tanks if that were the only question mark. Actually, replacing 1 large tank with 4 smaller tanks would sort of act as baffles.

    I have a 43’ president twin engine, both tanks are bad, currently looking into cutting them out myself, thank you for sharing this video!

    I’ve owned 3 GB’s w/steel tanks and respectfully add the following: these are 100 year boats if they are properly maintained. If the investment is made properly it’s a great opportunity and they will last another 50 years. I’ve always thought of myself as the current caretaker restoring and preserving the boat. Also, downsizing the tanks at this time reduces the cost and leaves more engine room space. Reducing the tanks from 600 gallons to 400 gallons (4 x100 gal.) drops the overall range roughly from 1,200 miles to 800 miles. Not a big problem for the many benefits.

      I agree, most tanks do not need to be replaced with proper inspections most people will find out there tanks are fine. We just finished a fuel tank survey where the tanks did not look great but after a little cleaning and a fuel tank professional inspection they were fine no replacement recommended.

    About $25,000 and four months. That's I spent replacing aluminum tanks on my 10, yes 10, year old Nordic Tug 40. We developed pinholes in one of the two fuel tanks. Had the entire sole of the salon ripped up to get the old tanks out and the new ones in. While only one fuel tank had the leaking pinholes, we decided to replace the other fuel tank and the water tank. If one was leaking, I wanted to replace them all as I wasn't going to go through this again. As it turned out, holes were developing in the other fuel tank, so it was a good decision. Not certain what caused the holes.
    Impeccable job was done at our marina and shipyard in Connecticut. Boat looks like it never happened.

      Thanks for sharing. People think there safe with aluminum but they can leak to usually at the welds is where it happens with them.

    In dry dock navy ships had holes cut out below the water line to access fuel tanks. Just a matter of the restoration.

    $25k was the price on an Island Gypsy 36 Europa. Did you guys consider cleaning and drying out the existing fuel tanks, cut some access ports large enough to reach in, and epoxy fiberglass the inside of the steel tanks? Fairly cheap and a good solution vs ripping everything up, pulling engines, etc.

    • @NoRegretsLifestyle
      @NoRegretsLifestyle  2 роки тому +1

      Actually we had a company come out and check the tanks and they were fine in the end

    I'll be buying a trawler soon and wAs aware of the problems with the 70's boats. Taking the tanks out yourself through the hull means you can leave the genset in place. I will only buy a single engine boat due to access. The job seems like a big one, but i think i could do it myself then have someone help to glass in the pieces you took out. And poly tanks, already built for diesel would be my first choice. Just think of the millions of poly jerry cans and the rough usage they get with no leaks. These tanks would never move even in a seaway. Then there is the leaking decks problem. I wonder if you can epoxy over the top or do you have to rip up the teak first. One way is fairly easy, ripping up the teak would take a while.
    So just one criticism, let your guest talk instead of yourself. Otherwise don't invite him. You just monopolized the conversation and added little but conjecture.

    I always wondered if you could get a fuel bladder custom made, like they use for nascar, you know a flexible tank then no need to cut the hull etc to get them in

    • @NoRegretsLifestyle
      @NoRegretsLifestyle  2 роки тому +1

      Yes that is a much cheaper option

      It is common to make custom fuel bladders for airplanes and fit them in through two small holes in the wing. Plumbing for fills and drains is probably the bigger issue.

    • @mikenagy938
      @mikenagy938 Рік тому

      I really like this idea of putting a bladder inside the existing tanks. It has to be about one fifth the cost.

    What about replacing the pumps that distribute fuel between two tanks to even them out? Can that be a huge deal and/or related to replacing the tanks themselves? If this is a fair question from a rookie? Boat is a Carver 356….2001 I think?

    Actually, there is a way to overcome the diesel smell
    in the bilge or other areas
    Sand and gelcote the entire area
    I had to do new gelcote due to a black mold problem
    The entire boat has a "new boat" smell

    Gel coats are NOT waterproof. How do you think hull blisters (from osmosis through the gel coat) happens?

    • @NoRegretsLifestyle
      @NoRegretsLifestyle  2 роки тому +2

      Well I was always taught that the fiberglass is not waterproof, its only waterproof becasue of the gel coat. Water gets between the gel coat and the fiber glass thats when a blister is formed. Most 40 year old trawler have some form of osmosis which is water in the fiber glass.

    Seems like the baffles in fuel tanks would make bladders a nightmare. Is there a way around that problem?

    • @NoRegretsLifestyle
      @NoRegretsLifestyle  2 роки тому

      Yes they cut the tanks open and remove the baffles, done correctly it's cheaper but would probably hurt the resale value as well.

    Is anyone familiar with fuel bladders like the military uses? Would that be an option for a liner in a tank instead of replacement ?

    • @JWDesert
      @JWDesert 2 роки тому

      You could perhaps look into fuel bladders in the aviation industry. They’re commonly used in helicopters and as additional tanks for ferry operations in airplanes. I’d imagine it would be a purely DIY fabrication to make them work but could be doable.

    • @NoRegretsLifestyle

    If they keep experimenting with ethanol blend diesel and start using it in the common market all those fiberglass tanks in boats will be absolute nightmares.

    Seems like its financially better to replace plastic tanks every 3 yrs or whatever than to spend 10's of thousands on new fabricated tanks.
    Imo
