I look at it as an investment in true high-end reproduction. It's worth it, vs just adding a bunch of more costly upgrades to the p3 or another lesser table.
Thank you Leon! I have been researching turntables for a few weeks and the Planar 3 was on my list. You made the decision for me, I ordered a P3 today!
@@domingodesantaclara1130 Hi Roger. I am very happy with the stylish appearance and the performance of the turntable, it is worth every penny. I went from a 1977 fully automatic turntable to a 1983 semi-automatic to my new Planar 3. I really do miss the semi-automatic feature, so I purchased a Tru-Lifter tonearm lifter to keep me from having to run to the turntable to lift the tonearm, what a great invention. Enjoy your retirement, I am right behind you, I am done working in 2023!
At the end of the day, it comes down to your budget - I am thinking of the P3 without any cartridge then get an Ania cartridge, sounds like a good combination for audiophiles and musicians like myself!
Love mine. Im using an audio technica at09iii, icon audio ps1.2 phono, stereo40iii amp and tannoy d80. Cannot see me changing anything for a very long time yet
Hi Leon, great interesting video, I recently bought rega planner 3, I now have the neo to psu mk1, Ellyis 2 cartridge, sounds great , but probably replace the sub platter for upgraded one . Regards mark
Was just wondering if my $200 bookshelf speakers were bottlenecking my $800 upgraded rp3, but couldn't find anything online. You guys basically answered it for me. Kind of an obvious answer, but still good to know.
I have the Planar 3 (1916) with Exact and tt - PSU. I think the difference about 6 is in the Metal platter and siliconic belt. In Italy you buy a Planar 3 with 730 euro; Forr this 6 Planar you must pay muh more. PLEASE, I HAVE A QUESTION : The Planar 3 is compatible with metal platter ( I think the name is a Groovetracer) and Siliconic Belt ? Sorry for my english language but i'm italian. You would think after 400 years they would upgrade thier often defective plastic sub platter. With 3D printers available I could see a nice perfect acrylic sub platter.
It is harder, but it eliminates an opportunity for sound issues, something rattling, wires being crossed, etc. Some brands like Audio-Technica still have it.
It is clearly no performance to have a better performance from the Neo PSU than with the TTPSU. The TTPSU had absolutely no implication whatsoever in performance. It was mesured proven and documented through mesurements.
I've been an audio file for over 40 years I've come to realize this these upgrade paths are stupid!!! Sure a little tweak here and their cables do make a difference between the source and the preamplifier make a difference!!! Speaker placement speaker height for most of those tweets are free!!!! Get a budget find someone who knows about good equipment and do the best you can!!! The difference between a good $3,000 system and a good $30,000 system is minimal don't waste your money!!!😎
The more money you spend the smaller Increment of quality you notice, but there are needles that cost 30k alone. They make ones that expensive for a reason, someone has the money and the ear for it lol.
You can benchmark your 3k system to my 40k system, the outcome will simply be that we are both happy with what we have. But to be completely honest, I have listened to 500k systems and have no problem admitting its much better. I just cant afford it, and even if I could, I wouldn't be interested in spending the money. saying that the difference is minimal is just not true. I wish it was.
@@butwait I hear what you saying but I stand by what I said sure $400,000 speakers sound better but how much better then $10,000 speakers or even $2,000 speakers or even a really good pair of $600 bookshelf speakers with a really good subwoofer the right placement the right equipment to me there's not a big difference✌
On the planar series I don't know. But better mass will help reducing the just okay amount of wow of the planar 3 for sure. Just, it depends of the added mass.
You will get an overall better sound quality, a more "3D" (layered) sound, and less background crackle. The planar 6 is very quiet as to all unwanted noise and delivers splendidly what's meant to be heard.
Beautiful turntables. The irony is that my XTZ CD-player costing $200 (used price) outperforms both Planar 3 (which I own) and Planar 6 in almost every department. A Marantz SA-KI Pearl Lite costing $400 (used price) is in a completely different sonic universe. With the platter rotating at the speed 1% faster than 33.3 rpm Planar 3 is tonally inaccurate. Not only is it faster than it should be. The speed of the platter varies significantly which means all long notes will become wobbly. Planar 6 is a little bit better in this department but far from the tonal accuracy of the much cheaper CD-players. Elys and Exact produce som much humming noise it is ridiculous. That amount of hum degrades the sound quality significantly. So, what do you get for $945 and $1595 respectively? Almost the same tactile experience as you'd get from a cheap $100 turntable. You'll of course get much better sound quality than with the $100 turntable but far inferior to a $400 CD-player. Going from Planar 3 to Planar 6 won't actually give you any sonic improvement worth anywhere near $650. You still have the exactly same tonearm. But of course, there is more to listening to vinyl than sound quality. I own a Rega Planar 3. Most of the time I don't know why. Sometimes I do.
You need to be into hifi to understand so i would stick to your second hand 200 bucks cd player & not get out of your depth. It all depends whether your a vinyl fan. Yes my cd6007usb marantz ( more than 200 bucks) probably sounds better than my rega planar 3 in perfection but to be honest your either a vinyl fan which involves more than purchasing a piece of digital music in a cheap plastic case & throwing it in an invisible draw in your cd playing box. It's the covers of your albums the ownership of real music made in a classic way, to putting of the needle gently down on a beautiful engineered piece of machinery that is nostalgic & has history. Old albums are now selling for tens of thousands that aint gonna happen with a cd ever. If your wanting to just throw it in a cd or listen to streamed music then you are not into hifi. The deeper bass due to a more sturdy plinth & feet is fish paste. Cartridge & arm define that. Classic “you fell for that” trap thats littered throughout this hobby. Manufactures know you’ll never buy both & a b them, unless you’re a dealer that also has skin in the game. Don’t fall for it, folks. The p3 has just as much low end resonance as the p6. Lol how did he know I was planning to get bookshelf speakers on the lower end ?
What was the cartridge that was recommended at the end? Thank you in advance
www.rega.co.uk/ania-mc.html they now have a Ania Pro option too which is even better introduced in 2020

The only RP3's I see sold on Amazon have the RB303 arm...am I losing a ton of sound quality by going with that over the RB330?
GREAT VIDEO!!
Thanks!!
Perfect if only have auto stop or auto lift
Thanks, we doubt that will ever happen. Thanks for watching
What's the weight of the planar 3 platter and what's the weight of the planar 6 platter ?
I dont know
Lots of hand waving in the vinyl world.
Do we need an external pre-amp or can we connect it directly to the receiver? Thanks.
If the receiver doesn't have a built in phono pre-amp you will need an external pre-amp.
Why have many companies gotten away from using a "head shell" on the tone arm, it must certainly make installing a cartridge much more difficult.
It is harder, but it eliminates an opportunity for sound issues, something rattling, wires being crossed, etc. Some brands like Audio-Technica still have it.
Thank you

Why design a separate speed control? Quite obstruct!!
