Happy New Year to you as well. Most excited about the GDome Mobile for my phone. This is the year I will get some underwater and above/below waterline shots of Common Loons.
Great video gents, sounds like a great time had by both of you with lovely images, I am jealous of these rainforest species that is for sure. Cheers, Duade
Great work fellas as always. Glenn--you're an old-timer like me still using BreezeBrowser.................thought I was the only one left. Anyway, I'd be interested to hear your technique for culling images with BB.................I wonder if you do it the same way I do or if perhaps you have some technique I haven't thought of.
Hi Jan Thanks for talking about flash photography for dynamics range problems I have talked about it a lot on my little channel and demonstrated the reasons why it is necessary But most amateur photography don't get is. And give me some uneducated replay . You have give some good back up for my teaching of this subject of Flash photography in a forest environment. So Thank again and happy new year to you and your family. Cheers Derek
Great show lots of good editing info too. I have bought the Bundle and already used it once for a washed out image and the 'overexposed' template worked a treat thanks. Jan I will see you in May on Gold Coast.
Just got my Z9 before Christmas, will be anxious to pair it with my 800 5.6 and 500 PF 5.6; for me it comes down to sharpness, and I don't mind the weight; properly mounted, the 800 is great. I'll be curious what the 800 6.3 brings though can't ever see myself moving over to it.
Hi Jan and Glen. If you are using Pure Raw with DxO’s specially designed optical modules, would you then suggest to turn off lens correction i Adobe Camera Raw? Do you use DXO Pure Raw for AL your pictures or just those with high ISO? Thanks for the always interesting video. I really enjoy these, so please keep them coming! Kind Regards, Jan, DK
Hi Jan. I have tested a little. I used the same picture twice, one lens corrected in DXO, and the second in CR. I took them into Photoshop on two layers, and sat them as difference mode. There is a slight difference in the correction, but it not much. Jan, DK
Since the mirrorless cameras are the top of the pile now, the I feel I must reached the end of the useful information because i have no plans now on in the future giving up my DSLR's. I have enjoyed your videos and the show you and Glenn created I can't see using my time for information which either won't apply to me or be useful. Thank you for the videos you have done and much luck in the future.
A good chat. I agree with Glenn's take on the Z9 and 800 lens. We'll have to wait for a real Birder's experience. I pre-ordered a Z9. *Glenn* , are you still working on your UA-cam Channel? Last video is from 4 months ago.
Will be great to hear what you think of the new camera! I'll still be trying to do a few videos from time to time. But focusing on this show for sure... Happy New Year!
Question 1: I purchased PureRaw over Thanksgiving (good sale!) at your recommendation. In PureRaw, do you use PRIME or DEEP PRIME? Should I apply the camera/lens correction options that DxO PureRaw offers. I shoot with the R5, the 100-500 or EF 500 with and without the 1.4 TC.
Question 2: Jan... FastStone question... how do you view 4 files at once and zoom in on all of them at once? Do you have any recommendations on FastStone tutorials. Obviously, I have not yet mastered all it's nuances!
Brilliant guys!!! I could watch this every day lol 😂 .... I'm all over the R1 when it comes out, I can’t wait! Also what's that program you use with a Macbook to speed up selection of best pics guys? and have you a link to it? I use the Finder on my macbook and drag the pics out on to my desktop i like then create another folder with them for editing... Glenn the underscore tips a killer! i'm totally doing that now lol and buddy, get a few panama videos out please!!!! 🙏 ...
And another question to both of you. Some time ago you complained that ACR has a bit wrong color reproduction on Canon R5/R6 RAW files. Has this improved or how did you solve the problem?
@@GlennBartley - Thanks. I don't know why YT remove my comment, where I asking you and Jan, why you are not use Fast RAW Viewer to first sort of your RAW images. Maybe it works now. I'm not sure if FRV can all the things you need. It's available for Mac and Windows of course.
@@robertrakowicz9666 Since I already have Breezebrowser and love it I use it. But Fast RAW viewer also seems a great option. But I thought Jan said it doesnt work with Mac. Or maybe that was a different program.
@@GlennBartley - It was a different software.. I think i try with your Presets and ACR. I'm long time Capture One user but now ..... I will move to Adobe
I think I tried Fast RAW Viewer for Mac, but preferred Photo Mechanic. The colours with the PROSETs work pretty well now in Adobe and Pure RAW gets rid of the noise
Thank you guys for a great video - again. I am constantly learning stuff from you! Now I directly downloaded the Faststone Image Viewer. Already I can see that it will be helping me in my daily workflow. I will look again how you described your flow and I will probably copy it with pride 😃 One question. Do you shoot in RAW or CRAW and why? Thanks again!
Cheers Daniel! Glad you found some good info. I usually use cRAW as I see no difference. But in really challenging lighting there may be a slight advantage to 14 bit RAW.
Great video guys. Couple of questions: Do you find that DXO affects the sharpness in your images? and with Faststone, is there a way to see the focus point the camera focused with, like can be done in BreezeBrowser? I tested it briefly recently and thought this was a nice feature
Do any of the image viewers you use to cull your rejects and select your favorites allow you to store the ratings in the raw files itself (as does DPP)? If you are writing this information to sidecar files, how do you access them later? Or do you simply rename or copy/move the images to new directories from within the viewing program?
Another great video. I bought your prosets over the Christmas holiday. They’re superb. Using them in Lightroom at the moment after processing through dxo but will be trying photoshop this year. Will get your masterclass soon. At the beginning of the video you mentioned tracking BIF with the R5. You have done videos on this some time ago. Have you tweaked your BIF tracking settings on the R5 since those videos? If so would the tweaks warrant another video or even part of a video on other tweaks you’ve made to the R5 during the last year? Keep up the good work. Love your videos every week 👍😁
No tweaks for me, except for a few minor ones that have no impact (reassigning buttons) Gad you are enjoying the PROSETS. Using Photoshop will open a whole new world :)
Yes...just seems like there are less options. At least that's what I gathered from Jared Polins video? But I have not used the camera so don't really know...
Another great video guys!! As an amateur Nikon shooter, I am looking forward to seeing how the new technologies will be available in other Nikon mirrorless cameras - maybe a baby Z9 (Z900), similar to how D500 came out with same auto focusing system as D5 or have SOME of the Z9 capabilities being available to Z6/ 7 series through firmware upgrades (A BIG ASK - I know... but a guy can hope :D)
Great video once again. Not really looking at new gear, as mine that is 3-4 years old allows me to take the shots I want. I get plenty of BIF keepers with a system that wouldn't be as good as the Z9. This year is more about improving my skills and editing, not new gear. Now Jan, if you want an elusive bird, try the Noisy Pitta or Paradise Riflebird.
Another cool episode. I'd love if you could talk about strategies to not disturb birds. What should we be concious of when in the field? Ideia for a video :) e
@@jan_wegener Really great question, but .. Maybe Jan is the wrong person for this topic, given the birds come landing on his balcony asking for attention haha 😛
Interesting discussion. This year, I'll be using the gear I acquired last year. I have a pretty good system now: Canon R5, 24-105 L, 100-500 L, and 800. I'm missing the ultra-wide, but I don't often do that kind of photography. What else would I need? Maybe a macro? Maybe a flash? I want to trade in my wife's Rebel T7i for a mirrorless and would probably get the 24-240 lens for her since she doesn't want to change lenses on her interchangeable lens camera. Fun times for gear enthusiasts! Glad you mentioned the environmental shots like I do.
When you talk about lighter camera, M4/3 comes in there. I know many people laughs at m4/3 but I moved from Canon 7d mark ii, 400 5.6 combo to Olympus em1 x and Olympus 300mm f4 pro (600 mm equivalent) and I managed to get some great photos! Though I must admit that I moved to Olympus mainly because I needed a 600mm badly but I couldn’t afford a canon 600mm. I am just an enthusiast and learned bird photography last year watching Jan and Duade on UA-cam. All in all, watching both of them, learning techniques from them and in combination with the lighter and less expensive equipment (and of course a bit of my artistic sense 😉) I managed to get some good shots!
Great video and I enjoyed watching it. I like this concept of 'The Bird Photography Show' that Glenn and you are doing. In terms of gears for 2022, if Canon announced a 200-600 lens for a reasonable price then that would be really exciting :D
Great video guys! Can’t wait to get my Z9, even if there are a few minor issues with the af system, I’m sure a couple firmware updates will iron those out. The 800mm pf is a 6.3 which is mind blowing to me as the fastest 800mm available right now is a 5.6 ( 1/3 of a stop faster and costs 15ish thousand dollars). I think the 800 pf will sell for around $5k. I think it’s minimum focus distance will be around 3m, which is good for a prime lens. While you guys may not need it, there are plenty of birders out there that will be stoked for this lens, including myself!
Ya I think it could definitely be an interesting option for sure. Overall if the trend is more MP and lighter super telephotos so I don't ruin my body sign me up!
Great informative and entertaining video. Since you both are primarily Canon shooters, how do you feel about the emphasis on new bodies as opposed to some innovative lenses. I'm not talking about super slow super telephoto consumer lenses, but like Glenn mentioned, something akin to the Nikon pf lenses. I own the Canon EF 400 DO II and I think it's quite underrated by many as to performance and IQ! As prominent members of the bird photography community, would you like to see more of an emphasis on newer, still fast, but smaller and lighter lenses? I'm thinking Canon would improve on the DO architecture and design something revolutionary. Admittedly, it wouldn't be a huge seller overall but I believe that it would be a game changer like the 500pf is for Nikon shooters. How about a Canon 500 DO f4 at that size and weight? What do you think?
Great podcast, thanks for the ideas to improve my workflow. I could never get into "jungling", way too stressful. Had just one go at this genre of photography, still remember chasing the elusive mauritius flycatcher. It gave me just two occasions, one second each. Once my camera betrayed me (thx Olympus), but the second time I got one sharp image of a female with a twig right across its head - thankfully I could photoshop it out. Then there was the fiasco with the mauritius kestrel. We inched through its trail without making a sound. And it was chilling on a tree right at the exit...
Great content guys 👍🏻 always something new to learn!! I ran into a similar contrast/ lighting problem when shooting American Bald eagles … with their bright white & black colorings
As a Canon shooter I'm interested in what the R1 will be but I'm so happy with the R5's and grips not sure I'll feel the need to buy one though. The Nikon 800PF sounds interesting also but like Glenn mentioned that minimum focusing distance will be important, if it's to long it may not make sense to buy 800mm over 600mm. I can't imagine having to go through 30,000 shots from a trip, I always thought my 5-6000 was a lot for a week trip but I guess I'm not shooting enough.
A friend got the Z9, I could try it out for some days. You are right, there is not as much control over the Autofocus compared to Sony A1 or Canon R5. The Autofocus is also inconsistent from time to time. Not bad at all but still the R5 and especially the Sony A1 are ahead of the Z9 here. It’s also a pain to operate with such heavy FL lenses, the are optically good but heavy like a tank. I don’t like it, really a burden. I know that Nikon fans won’t like such statement but it’s what it is and upcoming tests will exactly show this.
I appreciate your videos guys. However lots of youtubers are getting lately very technical about the gear sitting in their studios.(many of them don't know what they speaking about). You are different because you travel and your regions are very rich for wildlife. It could be nice to see more of the real stuff from the field like in the old Glenn's videos from South America.
The Nikorr Z 800mm f/6.3 is a PF (Phase Fresnel) lens as I have left a post after one of Jan's videos. You can already pretty much know what to expect. Think of it as a bigger Nikkor 500mm f/5.6 PF. I am not a Nikon shooter, at least not yet, but talk to the Nikon shooters and they will all tell you they love that lens. Can you believe it weighs in at 1.46kg?! That is a prime and is lighter than most superzooms out there. Plus, it is super sharp. So, I think you can almost expect that from the 800mm PF. It is not a gimmick lens like Canon's RF 800mm at f/11. I am also worried about the Z9's AF and tracking. It didn't look good in Jared Polin's video, but again that bird was extremely far. If it is not as good as the A1, R3 or even R5, I am sure Nikon will be cranking out firmware non-stop. I disagree with Jan on the 800mm focal length. I will argue 600mm is never enough. The people I know who owns a 600mm f/4 almost have a 1.4x TC on it semi-permanently like 95% of the time. Even at 840mm it is not ideal. But, the 800mm with a 1.4x to get it to 1120mm, that's about right. So, yes, a 800mm f/6.3 handheld prime will absolutely beat out both Sony and Canon hands down as far as handheld lenses go.
@@GlennBartley I expect you to get it because I know you came from a 7D II. I came from a 90D. I am just so used to shooting at 960mm full time. Even at 960mm, I was always hoping to get a bit more. But, the lethal combination is when you add superior focal length with incredible sharpness, decent enough fixed aperture of f/6.3 (as opposed to Canon's gimmicky f/11), plus extreme light weight? If it tests well with the Z9, I can see myself shooting Nikon. If it doesn't, then fine I will go with A1 + FE 200-600mm. I just saw the testing on A1's new firmware 1.2.0, target acquisition is even faster than before plus it is extremely sticky even with busy backgrounds. You can't go wrong with Sony really.
Another great show , thanks guys. One thing worth thinking about when converting files to DNG from the native file Raw format such as CR2 etc. if you intend to use that image in a photo competition at some point in the future, it may not meet the competition rules. Some competitions, like Wildlife Photographer of the Year would only accept a DNG file if that format was used in the camera body itself. A CR2 file that was converted to DNG would not meet the rules. That may not matter to most people but it’s just something to be aware of.
Thanks Gents, another interesting session from two of my favorite bird photography/UA-cam experts. (you are right up there too Duade) Wondering if you would be prepared to wade into a subject that seems topical on many forums, particularly in Glenn's hometown right now. It is the question of bird photography ethics. For about the past month there has been a Snowy Owl in the Victoria area and birders/photographers from around Vancouver Island are tracking it down in numbers that cause some concerns. On the mainland it is not unusual for some owls to see 30-40 photographers follow them like little kids playing soccer. The ball pops out of the centre and the group of kids follow behind. These situations I avoid as they are not the kind of experience I want but they are not uncommon. I get the sense there is a broad range of acceptable behaviors by country. In North America there is less/no acceptance for baiting birds as seems to be the case in raptor UA-cam videos from Europe. Song playback is a good one as well. Sometimes used to lure a bird out I've seen someone walking and shooting with a chest mounted speaker playing aimed at a Bluebird 20 feet in front of him for more than 20 minutes. Finally relented to my requests to turn it off given the bird was right in front of us. Is this a topic you have covered? I don't recall seeing anything from you and your thoughts would be appreciated.
It's a topic that will inevitably lead to lengthy and unpleasant discussions that lead nowhere in the end, because there are so many different opinions and ideas. The wellbeing of the bird should alway come first
To be fair to the Z9, the copy Jared had was a pre-release model and the AF tightness improved in the general releases model. In his test the Z9 did best when focussing on a the eye of a very distant subject. Nikon does have the customisation for tracking i.e., slowing the AF speed to lock on a blocked subject. Can eventually got rid of some of their vases because they were too complex and too many. I have the 500mm PF and it is so versatile. I believe the upcoming 800mm may be PF.
@@jan_wegener From what I have seen, I think the Canon R3 seems to track the best out of the Z9, A1 and R3. I'm a Nikon shooter and will stick with Nikon because I can't be bothered changing all my lenses etc. The Z9 is the first Nikon Mirrorless I would replace with my Nikon D500. The Z6/7 variations just didn't do it for the type of bird photography I do.
@@jan_wegener I think there will be a lot of longevity with the Z9 due to the very fast chip and no shutter. I think Nikon should be able to provide great improvements via firmware. I think Canon and Sony will do the same.
Hey Jan and Glenn, best wishes for the new year. Thanks for so many interesting insights (again). This time the culling logic (and the many aspects of it) was the most useful for me, given I still have a huge pile to process .. And then those awesome rainforest birds !! After Iceland coming summer, I should check which rainforest is the easiest reachable from Europe .. such amazing birds !!! Regarding the upcoming Canon APS-C bodies, I tend to disagree a bit with Glenn. The Rebel brand may still be strong in north America, but in Europe they are the xxxD and xxxxD lines, while in Japan they are called "Kiss". And when I'm recalling correctly, they also use 'Kiss' for the M-mount. I started myself with the 350D back in 2006 (and immediately took it on my first business trip to Japan) but I'm honestly not sure about the future of the Rebels and M-mount .. For lightweight and discrete travel photography or for vlogging they may have a niche and the glass they need. But I'm pretty confident the successors of the 90D and 7Dii will be RF mount. The 90D is about the same price point as the RP, but when forced to pick one of for birding, no doubt it would be the 90D. And Canon no longer has an excuse to delay the R7, given that a few months ago I gave up waiting for it and got the R6 plus a TC1.4 haha.
@@jan_wegener heheh, it was you who teached me Canon didn't want to damage R6 sales by bringing the R7 too soon. Maybe your audience isn't large enough yet to make a point to Canon such fear is no longer needed ;-)
@@GlennBartley Indeed, the name doesn't matter much. But given the current chip shortage, I sooner expect a higher-end crop body (either 90D or 7Dii style) rather than the lower margin rebels ..
I’m waiting on Fujifilms newest sensor and camera, along with the 150-600mm lens that’s in production. I’m hoping it’s the sleeper camera brand that comes out swinging and makes heads turn.
Yeah, the flash conundrum... One of my two main gripes with Canon's mirrorless bodies is the lack of pop-up flash. Why in hell did that vanish? I get that a pop-up flash would make the "over-hang" bigger, due to the EV being built-on, but still. Sometimes that little pop-up is very useful to me, like when I'm photographing moths around a UV-lamp for instance. Or a butterfly or bug that you just can't get into frame with the sun behind you, then just popping up that flash for a little filler flash is gold. To now be forced to ALWAYS have an external flash mounted sucks, or otherwise opt for not getting that much needed filler. I could gripe on for ever about this, but I will stop now.
@@GlennBartley Canon's flagship aps-c camera the 7Dmarkii had pop up flash and it's always a handy feature especially for backlit subjects and who wants to carry (or for that matter buy) a separate flash for occasional use.
@@jan_wegener -Started with the SLT and only IBIS, & it was fine. Used recently my old Sigma f4.5 500mm+Kenko MC4 plus+ Sony LE-EA5, to pair with A1 and it works well, but slower than 200-600, but as far as bokeh and low-light it was to me much better, as well as less tendency for distortion. BUT, it is extremely heavy (over 4Kg just the lens), and hand holding it for extended periods of time means being at peak shape and performance, which I'm not.
@@jan_wegener Also...-bye the time they push out the f2.8 400mm, they might release a software update that will pull the Z9 to position it on par with Canon & Sony. If this is the case, I might switch to Nikon all together.
Hoping for Canon and Nikon to release good adaptors (or firmware updates) for their customers' existing DSLR lens collections. This will encourage us to migrate just the bodies sooner vs waiting to upgrade the entire kit. If we wait why wouldn't we switch to a brand with the best price-to-feature value? e.g. Sony.
@@GlennBartley That's good to know. I am only going by the mixed reviews I've seen about the Nikon FTZ adaptor. Most claim that the AF is too slow and doesn't track well. But the IQ is uncompromised. Not sure if it's the FTZ or the body. I am in the process of 'upgrading' to a second-hand D500 + 4 lenses from my Pentax K3. Thanks in large part to you, Jan, Duade and Mark Smith for the inspiration🙏🏾 _If_ I manage to improve my bird photography technique to justify a FF mirrorless upgrade in 2-3 years time, I hope I would be able to keep my lenses.
I guess mainly because we have never used the gear and I have never actually met someone using it either. Not to say it's not great, but we don't have as much insight
I hope the development goes in the right direction. I don't need 30 frames per second but 6400 ISO performance. Who delivers wins. Nothing about Z9 about ISO performance. Better than D5 and D6 at higher megapixels???
It's called dubious speculation and makes up about 90% of the internet's content :P Besides that I have a few friends with the camera, so feedback has been coming in :)
Why is it Nikon bashing to comment on something we observed? I have a few friends with the camera, too. Hopefully I have a play with it, soon. I think the Z9 will be a great camera, and I want it to be great. It's by far better than any other camera Nikon has, that's clear.
I'd love an R7 Canon Rumors had a rumor of a new BSI aps-c sensor coming out which would be great in an R7 Probably it would use the R6's body and internals or similar and perhaps slightly cheaper than the R6 too. 30-35mp would be great. I've been tempted to buy an R5 but the price in New Zealand is a bit too high and when using electronic shutter Rolling Shutter can be a problem whereas a BSI like in Sony's A1 and Canon's R3 has much faster read out which fixes this. Do you guys plan to test the R3 for bird photography ? Ron L. Bielefeld of Whistling Wings has bought one and he's really impressed with it. Here's a link to his video: ua-cam.com/video/hPyiha0pMhE/v-deo.html
@@GlennBartley have a look at Ron's video, he thought the same but he's changed his mind and will be keeping it along with his R5. Ron is the only bird photographer to review this camera so far, the others are people like Jared Poulin and the Northrups who don't really understand bird photography.
The video was great with alot of information. I have always been an advocate of flash when it's called for. I would much rather us flash than have to up the iso to ridiculous high. As far as Glenn's comment that the DSLR is dead, I totally disagree. The same thing was said about film cameras and now they are finding renewed interest by another generation. Mirrorless will have it's time in the sun but camera manufacturers will realize the every new innovation means higher cost and that means a smaller piece of the consumer pie. In this every changing world due to a two year pandemic with no end in sight consumers have to make cutbacks and hobbies are first cut of the knife. I do HOPE I'm wrong but I've called most occurrences due to the pandemic correct as sorry as I am for that.
I'm not saying everyone should throw their DSLRs in the trash. But these manufacturers will not be making this type of camera in the future. There is simply newer and better technology that actually leads to distinct advantages in the field. I doubt the DSLR will have the nostalgic value of a film or polaroid camera....but you never know with hipsters...
Waiting for Canon R1, I think and hope it will be a fantastic camera. A1 is still the best high mp camera, better than Z9. R3 has probably the best autofocus.
Hope so. Great time for cameras with all 3 players competing for customers. I wish mirrorless trickle down in price as well. Full range of mirrorless camera bodies would be amazing.
You mentioned that the Z9 doesn’t seem as sticky as the a1 and R5 by viewing a fast flying bird at a significant distance away. How could you make that claim without testing it yourself. Can you show us how sticky your a1 and R5 are on fast flying birds mist of your bird photos are of birds that are sitting still. Show us some great shots of birds close up at a high frame rate that are pin sharp.
Glenn was only reporting his impressions from watching Jared's video and he clearly stated that it needs testing by a proper bird photographer rather than a UA-camr like Jared. I felt the same watching Jared's video it just didn't look as "sticky" as Canon's and Sony's latest cameras. Check it out for yourself. Nikon are a great camera company and their DSLRs such as the D850 are brilliant but none of their Mirrorless bodies have quite reached Sony and Canon's AF brilliance but perhaps the Z9 will get there especially after some firmware tweaks. We'll have to wait for proper reviews by proper sports/wildlife shooters and testing that compares it directly with the A1 and R3/R5
There's a series of A1 files (I think 68) of a duck flying against awful backgrounds and they're all tack sharp. Arguable not as far away as the heron in the video, but still far. 22:28 in this video ua-cam.com/video/WA_aV9MyDiE/v-deo.html I have a few friends with a Z9 and we are certainly not trying to hate on the camera, it will be by far the best Nikon camera. I would expect an A1 to track that heron with no problem and the R5 to do a bit better than the Z9. But again, we are only judging from one video and from what I have been told by friends who use it.
@@abhiph2982 The R3 is designed more as a sports and photojournalism camera, its not a direct competitor to the Z9 or the Sony alpha 1. We are still waiting on that camera from Canon. There's no need for your stupid anti Canon fanboy nonsense. You're highlighting your ignorance, not being clever.
@@markrigg6623 i am not anti canon. R5 heats and fails R3 even canon pros have pointed out their disappointment so i dont need to say much
I love it when you critique a camera that you have not even touched and then start to tell us why it doesn't work as well as other camera. Does nothing for credibility.
I don't think there's anything wrong with commenting on what we saw and compare it to what we know. Soon we will have seen it with our own hands We said you cannot draw conclusions from that
Jan as burnt canon has got with its failed R3 launch as nobody is talking about R3 It seems a canon burnout is showing from ur opening remark itself R5 isnt sturdy heats like a hot stove U are the only one who is talking negative of z9 and trying to show nikon is lesser than a non reliable non sturdy canon is really a low May be canon has approached their shooters to talk bad about nikon as they cant compete with the gear or already failed R3 So canon is depending on you guys to compete
Maybe you're interpreting a lot into what I said. It's just an observation. I mainly compared it to the A1, not Canon. I am not associated with Canon, so I don't gain anything from it being good or bad or whatever. I am hoping the Z9 will be the best mirrorless ever

Camerawise I have no idea what to expect. It does seem that you’re right that no more DSLR cameras will come. I’ve noticed that according to canonrumors several perfectly good and not very old EF and EF-S lenses have now been discontinued. No doubt to free production resources to make more RF lenses. Since I stopped using film around 2006, I’ve exclusively used Canon APS-C DSLR bodies. And I feel I am now in the very fortunate position that I don’t need more gear, I have pretty much everything I want. But if I was starting out today, I’d feel really worried. (Or more realistically: I wouldn’t buy Canon). All full frame cameras - and I mean ALL of them - are just ridiculously expensive, and going that way is just not an option for me. And even if someone were to give me, say, an R5 body for free, the lenses would still be too expensive. And I don’t like the Eos M system. The cameras are too small for my hands. The M6ii doesn’t even have a fully articulated screen which to me is an absolute deal breaker. (Btw, it’s interesting to note that the 90D and the M6ii were offered at the exact same price to begin with, but look what’s happened: The M6ii is now much less expensive than the 90D! Simply because it’s not as good). And how long has it been since Canon released a new EF-M lens? It seems they’ve pretty much given up that format. And whereas my EF-S mount cameras allow me to also use full frame EF lenses, if you own an EF-M body, there’s no chance of using full frame RF lenses. So actually there is no Canon mirrorless camera that would suit me right now. So my hope - my only hope - (other than just holding on to what I have till I die) is that Canon starts making affordable (meaning sub $1500, European tax included) prosumer RF bodies. Preferably with the wonderful eye controlled AF of the R3 which I’ve really missed since the film days.
Great thoughts Lau! I think we might see an RF Rebel soon that would meet your criteria. But you make a great point that you don't have to have the absolute latest and greatest to enjoy bird photography and to take fantastic images. Happy New Year!
@@GlennBartley A rebel doesn’t meet my demands, so that’s no consolation. It would have to be an RF continuation of the double digit DSLRs. Happy new year.
Happy New Year to you as well. Most excited about the GDome Mobile for my phone. This is the year I will get some underwater and above/below waterline shots of Common Loons.
Sounds great!
Happy New Year Everyone!

Ofc I enoyed the show! Still ravenously hungry for more photos and bird-videos, though, but that's just me I guess ;-)

Ya I love that program!!
Hi Jan
Thanks for talking about flash photography for dynamics range problems I have talked about it a lot on my little channel and demonstrated the reasons why it is necessary But most amateur photography don't get is. And give me some uneducated replay . You have give some good back up for my teaching of this subject of Flash photography in a forest environment. So
Thank again and happy new year to you and your family.

Kind Regards, Jan, DK
hey,
I use it on images when I need it. The model question is interesting. Might be worth a test.
Hi Jan.
I have tested a little. I used the same picture twice, one lens corrected in DXO, and the second in CR. I took them into Photoshop on two layers, and sat them as difference mode.
There is a slight difference in the correction, but it not much.
Jan, DK
Hi Jan, You mentioned cases briefly. Are you still using case one for AF with tracking? thank you and keep up the video content.
Yes I am!
Doesn't 99% of what we say apply to all cameras?
This show is focused on bird photography, not mirrorless cameras. There's still plenty of info that applies to all cameras.
Thank you!
Deep prime I usually leave it off

Question 2: Jan... FastStone question... how do you view 4 files at once and zoom in on all of them at once? Do you have any recommendations on FastStone tutorials. Obviously, I have not yet mastered all it's nuances!
select them all 4 and then press the compare button at the top

And another question to both of you. Some time ago you complained that ACR has a bit wrong color reproduction on Canon R5/R6 RAW files. Has this improved or how did you solve the problem?
They improved it a bit....but still not up to our standards. Which is why we created our PROSETS - thebirdphotographyshow.com/profiles.htm

Thank you guys for a great video - again. I am constantly learning stuff from you! Now I directly downloaded the Faststone Image Viewer. Already I can see that it will be helping me in my daily workflow. I will look again how you described your flow and I will probably copy it with pride 😃
One question. Do you shoot in RAW or CRAW and why?

Cheers Daniel! Glad you found some good info.
I usually use cRAW as I see no difference. But in really challenging lighting there may be a slight advantage to 14 bit RAW.
Yes, it's a great program.
As Glenn says, cRAW is good for most, except when you have too lift dark areas, then it will be a bit noisier.
Thank you guys!!!

Great video guys. Couple of questions: Do you find that DXO affects the sharpness in your images? and with Faststone, is there a way to see the focus point the camera focused with, like can be done in BreezeBrowser? I tested it briefly recently and thought this was a nice feature
If anything it over sharpens them a bit. Not sure if you can
If you turn off the global lens sharpening I find it works well.
Do any of the image viewers you use to cull your rejects and select your favorites allow you to store the ratings in the raw files itself (as does DPP)? If you are writing this information to sidecar files, how do you access them later? Or do you simply rename or copy/move the images to new directories from within the viewing program?
You can move the xmp files as well. Not sure anything other than canon can alter the RAWs
There are plenty of new videos for you guys to watch as well. What do you think after watching some of these?
ua-cam.com/video/ySCMSLI-Mxk/v-deo.html
It seems to work pretty well for sure. It definitely feels like it's up to the level where the eye tracing is a real feature
No tweaks for me, except for a few minor ones that have no impact (reassigning buttons)
Gad you are enjoying the PROSETS. Using Photoshop will open a whole new world :)
@@jan_wegener thank you 👍
The Z9 has a setting you can adjust for how "sticky" the auto focus tracks a subject without bouncing to other things that are in the frame.
Yes...just seems like there are less options. At least that's what I gathered from Jared Polins video? But I have not used the camera so don't really know...
As we had on the D5 and the D6 has additional adjustments on focus tracking.
I’ve already ordered the Nikkor 800mm 6.3. First one on the list at my local camera shop.
That's getting out a head of the game! 👍
ha, nice!
Yes Nikon needs to fill out the line up with z9 technologies for sure.
All of the big platforms need an affordable fast focusing mirrorless body.
same here! A Z90 with an APSC sensor, the Z50 body and Z9 tech would be a perfect camera for me
That would be great It sounds like the processor in the Z6\7 II cameras is too slow for major firmware updates when it comes to the AF.
@@jan_wegener oh no.. that's bad news 😔
In a pinch Reflectors can be utilized.
Got the Pitta, but the Riflebirds seems very hard :D
Yes gear is only one piece of the puzzle that's for sure. Adding skills to your toolbox is a great way to go!
Personally, I find eye autofocus such a big leap forward I would advise people not to wait any longer than they had to to upgrade.
Another cool episode. I'd love if you could talk about strategies to not disturb birds. What should we be concious of when in the field? Ideia for a video :) e
Thanks!
I recently bought the 14-35 & 24-105. Great lenses
Sounds like a great kit. And as you spend more time in the field you can always add specialist lenses IF you feel you need them.
All in all, watching both of them, learning techniques from them and in combination with the lighter and less expensive equipment (and of course a bit of my artistic sense 😉) I managed to get some good shots!
awesome!
Great video and I enjoyed watching it. I like this concept of 'The Bird Photography Show' that Glenn and you are doing. In terms of gears for 2022, if Canon announced a 200-600 lens for a reasonable price then that would be really exciting :D
Awesome, thank you! Yes, I would buy that in a heartbeat
Looking forward to 2022 and potential camera competition always good for the industry and future developments. Awesome video guys ! 👍😍
Thanks so much. Happy New Year!
Same! Thank you
Great video guys!
I am sure the Z9 is a great camera! That would be by far the shortest MFD of any 800, I hope that it will be that short!
@@jan_wegener I may be dreaming, but I have hope😂 it will likely be closer to 5 or 6m, we’ll soon find out!
Great memories I'm sure!
Happy New Year!
Always good to get the shot and being bale to fix it if need be
Are the prosets strictly for canon files?
No, they work very well on most brands. We had great results with Sony, Nikon & Olympus, too when we tested them.
You guys have great lighting for your Bird Photography Show. What is your setup?
Mine is just a table and two Aputure LED lights, and a lot of natural light, which looks nice, but makes it hard when the weather changes.
I am just using some home reno LED shop lights mounted to light stands and bounced off the ceiling and a sheet.
Cheers!
Excited to get my Z9 in 2022. Almost jump ship to Canon R6 or R5.
Awesome!
Great content guys 👍🏻 always something new to learn!! I ran into a similar contrast/ lighting problem when shooting American Bald eagles … with their bright white & black colorings
Thank you
As a Canon shooter I'm interested in what the R1 will be but I'm so happy with the R5's and grips not sure I'll feel the need to buy one though.
Well I was away for 3 weeks 🙂
Yes, I am also keen to see the R1 :)
First comment :) always a pleasure to see a new episode.

We shall see. I am sure it's a great camera, definitely the best Nikon Mirrorless
@@jan_wegener Yes, because the Z6 and Z7 were simply poor enough :)

@@GlennBartley exited 😍
Always a juggle on UA-cam between topics that get the most views and other things :) But we try to do a bit of everything
@@jan_wegener you do a great job !
If they can make it in the same caliber as the 500 and 300 PF it will be a VERY interesting lens for sure!
@@Rascallucci Maybe learn how to get nearer the birds?
@@ianmackenzie8584 You can't get near the bird in many situations. I will take a 800mm over a 600mm any day.
Thanks for the info. I use my 600 probably 50% without an extender at least
We always keep the RAW file, not the DNG file.
@@jan_wegener good plan.
Thanks Gents, another interesting session from two of my favorite bird photography/UA-cam experts. (you are right up there too Duade)
Wondering if you would be prepared to wade into a subject that seems topical on many forums, particularly in Glenn's hometown right now.
The wellbeing of the bird should alway come first
@@jan_wegener Don't disagree. There is a reason folks fear to tread here. All the best in 2022!
Yes, I have now used 3 different Z9s myself. Very nice camera. Definitely a bit of a complicated AF system, but capable overall
Sony A9 iii....looking forward
Yes, will be interesting to see that one
And Canon no longer has an excuse to delay the R7, given that a few months ago I gave up waiting for it and got the R6 plus a TC1.4 haha.
even you buying an R6 didn't get Canon to make an R7, that tells us a lot :D
I just hope they come out with a decent crop body in 2022. Whatever they want to call it!
That would certainly shake things up wouldn't it!
That would be interesting to see!
I'm hoping this the year Nikon produces a mirrorless successor to the D500.
That would be great for sure!
I hope DSLR d880
That would be great
Yeah, the flash conundrum...
Maybe it will return in the future lower end R cameras? Because the high end cameras never had a pop up flash right?
@@GlennBartley Canon's flagship aps-c camera the 7Dmarkii had pop up flash and it's always a handy feature especially for backlit subjects and who wants to carry (or for that matter buy) a separate flash for occasional use.
As Glenn says, maybe in the lower end models, but the RP doesn't have it, so maybe not
Hopefully the Nikon f2.8 400mm with integrated TC. I would buy one, even to pair with my Sony A1.
That will be a great lens. I don't think cross-brand dating wild the AF & stabilisation any favours, tho.
If we wait why wouldn't we switch to a brand with the best price-to-feature value? e.g. Sony.
What don't you like about the current adapters? I find the RF one works fantastic and is only $100...
Thanks in large part to you, Jan, Duade and Mark Smith for the inspiration🙏🏾
_If_ I manage to improve my bird photography technique to justify a FF mirrorless upgrade in 2-3 years time, I hope I would be able to keep my lenses.
I think the AF not tracking well might be more the AF system. Hard to say, since there are not many mirrorless Nikon lenses to compare with.
Don't forget Olympus! Why do you never mention them? Many bird photographers are using the E-M1X or E-M1Mk3! And procapture is a game changer.
I am definitely jealous of that pro capture for sure!
I imagine it will be. But haven't seen conclusive tests yet. Would be great to get one in our hands and test side by side with R5.
Happy New Year!
Maybe not better, but at least equal at double the pixels almost would be a good start :)
800 f6.3 depends on weight. If 2 kg or less I will probably buy. If not 500 f4 with teleconverter is heavy 3 kg but good
Pretty much sums it up 🙂
Yes, could be a fun lens. I doubt it will be less than 2, but who knows :)
I'm trying to understand how either of you can comment on a camera Nikon Z9 that you haven't used?
lol
We specifically say we haven't used it and that we need more info....just something to talk about.
I'm guessing you shoot Nikon 🤣
@@GlennBartley You must be trying to sell something, Sad very sad!!
It's called dubious speculation and makes up about 90% of the internet's content :P
Besides that I have a few friends with the camera, so feedback has been coming in :)
in 2022 I want sony to add focus racking/stacking to the camera's
that would be nice
R7 R7 R7!!!! 30mps. Like an R5 but with an APS-C. R8 and R9 should be rebels and/or R/RP replacements.
Would be nice to see
Sounds good to me!
A light-weight 800 mm fresnel could be great, if it's affordable!
I suppose you know that DIY birdfeeders might be of interest to your viewers.
In what way?
@@GlennBartley People want to know what works. Particularly if there is a clever design.
mine always looks pretty ugly, tho :D
@@jan_wegener I'm pretty confident that mine are no better.
Two Canon's guys together in the same Nilon's bashing. How do you judge the Z9 AF system if you never had it in your hands?
Why is it Nikon bashing to comment on something we observed? I have a few friends with the camera, too. Hopefully I have a play with it, soon. I think the Z9 will be a great camera, and I want it to be great. It's by far better than any other camera Nikon has, that's clear.
There's always one...
I'd love an R7
Canon Rumors had a rumor of a new BSI aps-c sensor coming out which would be great in an R7
Probably it would use the R6's body and internals or similar and perhaps slightly cheaper than the R6 too.
For me the R3 just doesn't have enough MP for how I shoot. I'm sure it focusses great and as amazing IQ. But would just be cropping too much.
@@GlennBartley have a look at Ron's video, he thought the same but he's changed his mind and will be keeping it along with his R5.
Ron is the only bird photographer to review this camera so far, the others are people like Jared Poulin and the Northrups who don't really understand bird photography.
I am hoping to get one at some stage
I guess dead in the sense that the major brands won't produce any more of them
👍🏾🙏🏾
Waiting for Canon R1, I think and hope it will be a fantastic camera. A1 is still the best high mp camera, better than Z9. R3 has probably the best autofocus.
Will definitely be interesting to see what Canon comes out with!
Hope so. Great time for cameras with all 3 players competing for customers. I wish mirrorless trickle down in price as well. Full range of mirrorless camera bodies would be amazing.
Yes, will be fun to see what happens with it
You mentioned that the Z9 doesn’t seem as sticky as the a1 and R5 by viewing a fast flying bird at a significant distance away. How could you make that claim without testing it yourself. Can you show us how sticky your a1 and R5 are on fast flying birds mist of your bird photos are of birds that are sitting still. Show us some great shots of birds close up at a high frame rate that are pin sharp.
I think we pretty clearly state that it is too early to tell and we need to see more field results.
@@GlennBartley then why even say it when you don’t have a Z9!
Lets see some of your tack sharp photos of birds in flight at a distance
Arguable not as far away as the heron in the video, but still far.

ua-cam.com/video/WA_aV9MyDiE/v-deo.html
I have a few friends with a Z9 and we are certainly not trying to hate on the camera, it will be by far the best Nikon camera. I would expect an A1 to track that heron with no problem and the R5 to do a bit better than the Z9. But again, we are only judging from one video and from what I have been told by friends who use it.
Shouldn't be using any flash on animals. Change camera settings or lens.
Shame on you Jan
Doing the bidding for canon as cannon could not compete with z9 with its failed R3 attempt
doing what? It's what we use every day. The R3 seems to be aimed at sports shooters
@@jan_wegener R3 failed big time and you also know it
Nobody is talking abt it and it was overshadowed by z9 big time
@@abhiph2982 The R3 is designed more as a sports and photojournalism camera, its not a direct competitor to the Z9 or the Sony alpha 1. We are still waiting on that camera from Canon. There's no need for your stupid anti Canon fanboy nonsense. You're highlighting your ignorance, not being clever.
@@markrigg6623 i am not anti canon. Its surprising that how people self assume thing and showcase their capability

I don't think there's anything wrong with commenting on what we saw and compare it to what we know. Soon we will have seen it with our own hands

Jan as burnt canon has got with its failed R3 launch as nobody is talking about R3
It seems a canon burnout is showing from ur opening remark itself
R5 isnt sturdy heats like a hot stove
U are the only one who is talking negative of z9 and trying to show nikon is lesser than a non reliable non sturdy canon is really a low
May be canon has approached their shooters to talk bad about nikon as they cant compete with the gear or already failed R3
So canon is depending on you guys to compete
Maybe you're interpreting a lot into what I said. It's just an observation. I mainly compared it to the A1, not Canon. I am not associated with Canon, so I don't gain anything from it being good or bad or whatever. I am hoping the Z9 will be the best mirrorless ever
@@jan_wegener ypu have always loved canon and sony and that is perfectly fine but without using a camera you start your conversation with a bland statement that its good for nikon level but jot upto sony and canon shows it

I am sure Canon will focus on making cheaper bodies.
@@jan_wegener Yes it would make sense if they did. But Canon’s actions haven’t always made sense to me.
