      My observation is that the hype goes back and forth between those two. And surely both have features the other one is doing better or the other one is lacking.
      I guess knowing both and working with each of their strengths would be ideal.

    Thanks for sharing Raphael. This is really a tricky one - because usually the "hide the object inside a non-visible Null" makes no problems, except in this Octane Moblur case. This would really be the last thing I had thought of...

      The Motion Blur pass is saving direction vectors in the pixels. To my knowledge the format it is stored in needs 32bit and needs to be converted to be used with e.g. real smart motion blur in AE. But take my statement with a grain of salt as I always render out motion blur and have not done post motion blur in ages.

    Love it, those tips save a lot, because it's not something obvious. Taking advantage of this subject, I would like to see with you, if you know the better way to deal with motion vector pass workflow between cinema 4d/octane and after effects. Thanks!

    • @SilverwingVFX
      @SilverwingVFX  2 роки тому +1

      Hey thanks a lot. Also for your suggestion.
      As I am always rendering motion blur I do only have minimal experience with motion vectors in Octane. Most people I know render the Vector pass in C4D standard renderer I know that Octane is capable of producing a vector pass, but to my knowledge its a different format that needs 32bit.

  • @pixel_dealer
    @pixel_dealer Рік тому +1

    Hi! Thanks for the tutorials! I have a problem that can’t solve and can’t find tut for it: I made a scene like a car chase, camera moves within a car, and I want to motion blur all but not a car. I’ve tried to separate car from bg and blur it separately but it was poor result. Could you please explain how it works?

    • @SilverwingVFX
      @SilverwingVFX  Рік тому

      Hey there and thank you for your question.
      You are not the first one who asked me that ha ha.
      Here are a couple of things:
      If your car rig is dynamic, its best to bake it down to keyframes. (It might also work without baking but can create problems sometimes)
      If you have that working, you need an octane object tag on the base null of your car (so every part of the car is effected)
      It works like in real life. In reality everything has motion blur. But your camera is moving next to the car with the same speed. Hence the speed of the car and the speed of the camera is canceling each other out. So you see the car unblurred.
      So in your scene setting leave the setting to full motion blur.
      If your wheels are turning fast, you might need more "Time samples per frame" those will only show up when rendering in the picture viewer (not in the live viewer) though.
      All geometry that is moving in your scene needs an octane object tag. This will enable it to have motion blur.
      The attributes of the tag will be inherited to eventual children (therefore it is only necessary to place one tag on the null in which the whole car is contained)
      Put a octane camera tag on your camera and set motion blur to on.
      In newer Octane versions I recommend to set the motion "Shutter Type" to "Angle" and then leave it at 180° This is how most modern movies are shot at.
      And that is it. Your scene with motion blur should now work.

    Thank you for explaining this! I have a problem with VDBs nested in the moving null together with the camera. Motion blur is rendered wrong even with velocity channels. It renders as if the vdb is moving compared to camera, too much motion blur. Adjusting tag or unchecking motion blur in vdb setting does not help.

    • @SilverwingVFX
      @SilverwingVFX  Рік тому +1

      Hey, thank you for your comment!
      I am unsure, but this sounds like an limitation. Putting motion blur on a volume probably is a different thing then putting it on an object.
      I just did a small test loading a VDB trying to move its coordinates and blurring it. And it did not work. I have to check back with the developers on this. Would be good to have the possibility of motion blur on volumes!

    • @vladasimovic2732
      @vladasimovic2732 Рік тому +1

      @@SilverwingVFX Thank you! I created flying vehicle exhaust simulation in Embergen and then attached it to the moving object in Cinema. So it looks like the moving object emits the smoke and fire out of exhaust. But it renders completely wrong even with velocity channels. It is too blurred. So my example is vdb sequence, not static vdb which I then animated. Disabling motion blur on VDB also doesn't work. Hope I make sense :)

    • @SilverwingVFX
      @SilverwingVFX  Рік тому +1

      @@vladasimovic2732 Hey there. I think the motion blur / velocity in the volume is only for movements within itselv. Think of a fast moving explosion. It would look weird without motion blur. Its not a setting when moving the VDB itself.
      Of course if you have software like Houdini. Sou could write the right vectors in there to get the according motion blur.
      Though I think moving VDB motion blur should be implemented. As I said. I try to speak to the devs about it!

    • @vladasimovic2732
      @vladasimovic2732 Рік тому

      @@SilverwingVFX Thank you this helps clear things up. I also found similar explanation online. I guess the only way is to export the scene with relevant objects in Embergen together with camera. Then simulate and import VDB back into default position with animated volumes. Otherwise we have double motion blur, from velocity channels and from animating within software. Devs should actually make the disabling motion blur for volumes work. Seems it doesn’t at the moment. So we have just one motion blur active.
      Sorry for too many questions, and thanks for the patience 👍🏻

    • @SilverwingVFX
      @SilverwingVFX  Рік тому +1

      @@vladasimovic2732 No need to be sorry at all! I spoke to the dev. Volumes are not capable of transform motion blur.
      What I guess you have in your scene is camera motion blur. If a Object is traveling with the same speed alongside the camera its motion blur and the cameras will cancel each other out. Since volumes do not have the capability of transformation motion blur it looks like they are static and therefore get the full camera motion blur.

    does volumetric elements like smoke & fire work good with z depth pass and motion vector pass?

    • @SilverwingVFX
      @SilverwingVFX  10 місяців тому

      In general transparent media and post Z-Depth, post Motion Blur does not work well together.
      All transparent media (including windows, glass, but also fog haze and smoke) have transparency. So basically one pixel has multible depth layers to it. But only one single information set for either depth or velocity. So using post depth and post motion blur does not work well on transparent pixels.
      Usually the best way to do that there is to render motion blur and some depth haze.
      As always there are tricks to get around it though and make rendering faster, as rendering the transparent elements as an extra pass and then comping those in. But this takes a bit of experience.
      Not quite sure if that even answers your question. If not, please feel free to correct me with another question 🙌
      Cheers and a great start into this week!

      Gey George,
      there was a Bug with the motion blur in volumes. I think it´s fixed now, but I have not verified it.
      If you move your volume / vdb generator and expect it to have motion blur. This is unfortunately not supported at the moment.
      About the CPU Threads. You got me there. This is one of the things I do not know. I always leave it at the default 😁

      I think you would have to do some vector math to get it working in AE as the Motion-Vector Path of Octane is different to the one ReellSmart uses.

    How about motion blur on huge particle counts like X-particles fluid sim? I've never ever get it to work with Octane. It just take too long even hours just to calculate motion blur (not on the mesher with velocity vector but on cloning huge particles like foam)
    .

    • @SilverwingVFX
      @SilverwingVFX  Рік тому

      Hey there and thank you very much for your comment.
      I think you are right. Rendering millions of particles is not octanes strengths. With thousands it should be fine if the particles are render instances and not objects.
      Other renderers as Arnold or Redshift have particles primitives and can render them a lot more efficiently. Hopefully Otoy will integrate something like this into Octane sooner then later!
