For that matter, let’s remove Sonic’s arms, pull off his legs, and pluck out his eyes. Edgy stuff like talking hedgehogs is way too out of style for modern demographics, so we’re gonna have to make him a blank slate devoid of all personality. Stories have no place in games. Now, we’re gonna need tight, competent, engaging gameplay that revolves around speed. Essentially, we need to make a good game about going fast - I know, it’s a bit too mind-blowing, but stay with me. Just add some watercolor to indicate a superior, more cultured artstyle and VOILA! - an instant indie classic

Imagine being permanently stuck in a level because you don't have enough rings to proceed
I mean you could just grind for more, which is still an awful idea. Or all the paid puzzles could be totally optional and have a normal way to proceed through the level. Which would still be awful and make the mechanic feel like an afterthought. Or just paying a fee to take a shortcut. No matter which way you cut it, it’s a terrible idea.
This problem could be circumvented by allowing the player to get additional rings at any time via microtransactions. Everybody loves those, right?

TLDR version, there was a thread on /v/ about this video and about the same time that thread was gaining traction in mocking it the video got deleted.
As far as I know no one harassed the author, they just laughed at this with "vulnerable" memes as per protocol for the sonic fandom, one theory is that the author was on /v/ at that time and couldn't take the hit despite the video being older than the thread by a long mile.
Anyways is hard not to link the two events together in the minds of /v/ and yes that was the short version.

The constant emphasis on market trends, sales numbers, and review scores might honestly be my least favorite part of this video. It's so cynical and cold, putting profits above all else -- but ironically this idea would never make money for the Sonic IP because it's fundamentally opposed to Sonic's core traits. This video is like something created in a corporate board room by the most clueless executives in the industry.

This redesign highlights the issue with recoloring the arms. The reason that blue arms work on Boom and Movie Sonic is because they're 3D. Sonic's arms were peach originally because if they were blue in the sprite, you'd never be able to tell where his body ends and his body begins in his profile, especially when he's moving. Looking at this redesign I could barely tell that the arms were holding on to the backpack straps, they just looked like blue ovals, so that should tell you there's a problem.

Even in the live action movie Sonic wore a bag that hung at his side, which just seems to make more sense. I could see them making that a permanent feature in Sonic's design future games (it makes a lot more sense than sports tape and a brown scarf, that's for sure), along with Tails' yellow rucksack, heck even give Knuckles a bum bag/fanny pack so that in the cutscenes they don't have to resort to the usual "pulling a Chaos Emerald from behind their backs" trick.
I think it could work, but this is the Sonic fan base who have a habit of complaining about the most trivial of things, so there's probably no chance of something like that happening without whiners whining!

Honestly, this guy’s idea on fixing Sonic was to strip everything that even made Sonic good in the first place. Sonic Mania has proven this ideology to be 100% false and let’s face it, outright arrogant.
Not only that, but make it a generic indie game
I like some of the new features he has put, but I dont understand the appeal of completely changing sonic's look. If this game were to work off the the nostalgic factor of your older age fanbase, why change the character they love and know with something so uncharacteristic of sonic. If anything, keep these new gameplay changes like the different moves, but keep the same sonic that the older audience knows, the cocky and cool sonic.
I'm gonna play a little bit if Devil's Advocate and say that it'd be pretty cool to see a boss you have to use Elemental Shields to drag the boss towards some spikes to deal damage while said boss is trying to get away from you.
Sonic Mania proves that the OG platform and sticking to that does work. Sega just refuses to expand upon that and in their attempt to reinvent Sonic, that they should study to be exactly what made him…or completely reinvent him. This video was made years before Mania, and even so Mania was made by fans. Sega is so out of touch that they need to hand it off or fully reinvent him in the way this video suggests. I think this method could work, it might be different but it is targeting the generation that grew up on Sonic rather than the generation now which could give a shit unless they have parents who shows them who Sonic is

Can confirm that fact, i own genarations and almost NEVER play the 2D stages.
Most people prefer the 2D stages and bought it for that. I was one of them. Not sure which I prefer now.

Yeah, Generations' 2D levels were a fun gimmick at first but the physics are simply not accurate enough to the actual Genesis games to be actually fun to replay. The Modern stages have more satisfying shortcuts and are more fun to speedrun

Just learned about this video today. I can’t remember the last time I laughed as hard as when little wiggly Sonic came on screen with the epic WOOOOMP sound. Everything about this video is so surreal, it’s such an incredible amount of misplaced confidence
Watching this video again has cured my imposter syndrome. This was only my second viewing after watching it once when it was new and I STILL remembered so much about it all these years later. It's unforgettably bizarre.
I thought for a second that was just a stylization. When I realized it was the actual proposed design for Sonic I understood why everyone was freaking out about it

The things he’s saying are contradictory to himself, he says Sonic should be completely changed into a different character, yet also says the demographic should be to people familiar with the old Sonic universe?
The funniest part is that he’s completely serious in his revisions. The editing, the music, how he delivers his point; he legitimately believes every line he says. Some of his criticisms ring true, but he takes them in the completely wrong direction. All the over-reliance on analytics and “Well game X does Y, so Sonic should do Y too” make me think of out of touch business men that run a lot of game companies right now.

SEGA actually does "well game X does Y, so Sonic should do Y too" thing, like with GTA 3 and its weapons, SEGA made Shadow the Hedgehog. When fighting games were popular, SEGA made the Werehog.

The only excuse I can think of is that it's a magic backpack and it needs magic rings as raw material to "craft" powerups. But that's extremely silly, so...

Yeah it’s fascinating. It’s such a well put together video with graphs and market research, but it missed the blindingly obvious fact that Sonic Boom failed because it was a spinoff with an awful dev cycle that released on a dead console

A series like Sonic is supposed to aim to all ages. From kids to adults.
Sonic's whole shtick is his cocky attitude. Too cool for school, gotta go fast. He literally taps his foot impatiently when left idle. He's meant to be the polar opposite of Mario, which is much more mellow and fun. Sonic is fun, but in a cool way.
Him being "vulnerable" or "cautious" makes him, well... not Sonic.
I bet this man is one of those people who hated batman: the brave in the bold series for taking the bat costumed vigilante and putting him into a cartoony silver age style setting and not some gritty dark setting.

I find this to be so interesting. Not because I agree with the direction he wants to take the character. He managed to completely understand why Sonic's failing while also completely missing the mark on how to make him popular again. He gets why sales and ratings fluctuate compared to Mario and he understands that Sonic is targeting the wrong demographic so... he turns Sonic into an indie puzzle-platformer because that's what's popular??? Nobody would like this. Maybe this would be a really good game, but it's not what Sonic needs.
I actually disagree with the demographic part. Sonic is a series made for all ages to enjoy. It's why most adults still enjoy him.
The problem this series always had post unleashed isn't the demographic its pleasing long time fans and gaining new ones.

Here's my problem with his idea.
It's hypocritical as he's now perpetuating the problem he's trying to solve, Sonic's lack of identity, by completely reworking Sonic for the umpteenth time. It could be an interesting title but it's just continuing to stray away from what even made Sonic Sonic in the first place. He's bogging down the fast, thrilling gameplay with puzzle elements that have no business being there. Swapping out the iconic design for something entirely new. Hell. He even swapped out Sonic's iconic personality for something more cautious, maybe even fearful for a character known for neither of those traits. This game concept could work for a new IP or something. Or even a spinoff. But clearly not mainline Sonic. It's just continuing the problem he's trying to solve.
Except worse. This barely even resembles Sonic at all.
And the blue arms aswell..

One of Sonic's most popular aspects compared to Mario is the fact that he *IS* cocky. He has an attitude and isn't afraid to show that while still being a good person. His personality isn't "hedgehog go fast", he's a good person, trying to see the best in everyone, even those who try to attack him and bring him down whole bringing his own brand of cocky confidence to the table. Just stripping that away, taking away that cocky smile that exudes confidence and style to replace it with a scared, vulnerable, beady-eyed kid just takes one of the main things that makes Sonic special and makes Sonic, well...Sonic.
That's literally one of the things that helped Sonic sell in 90s

There's even a moment when Sonic knows he won't be the hero in the eyes of many, but he's still doing what he feels is right. In Sonic and the Black Knight he is warned he will be the worst of knights, the slayer of kings. He simply says "Guess I can't always be the hero". I don't know why but this moment in that game stuck out to me a lot.

That fucking Inception horn gets me every time.
The "backpack" system sounds absolutely braindead and I hate it. Even things like the boss breaking a Lightning Shield to get spikes drawn towards them wouldn't work because there's no precedent for that working at all in the past. There is absolutely nothing engaging about a long, ugly row of spikes that "needs" invincibility.
Yeah, the backpack system is essentially just an elaborate way of disguising locks and keys. Not to mention, the fact that you need to buy items from your own backpack means one of two things: 1) players can infinitely grind for rings to keep from getting stuck, making the system a waste of time, or 2) all backpack usage is optional to prevent players from getting stuck, making the system feel like an afterthought.

His redesign somehow makes Sonic look like a generic indie game and a soulless corporate mascot at the same time. His gameplay advice boils down to "make better levels". He's using publicly available stats which are prone to manipulation or being wrong to make points when Sega no doubt has much better metrics internally for how well things do.
All this wouldn't be so bad if he didn't approach it as if Sega was a floundering startup company full of people who don't know what they are doing. It's like he doesn't realize Sega has tons of successful games outside of Sonic.

How do you take away so much of Sonic's identity and claim that it's the long-time fans who'd eat it up? They'd absolutely despise this, it's so far from the Sonic they know. This re-design looks like the one that would be geared towards children who don't have any personal experience with the franchise.

As somebody who has worked in the industry for half a decade now, it is people like this that completely kill projects. Completely overthinking insignificant details while being confidently wrong with almost every statement. This attitude of "I sound definitive, this IS the correct opinion" is always a telltale sign of somebody who is an active detriment to the team. This dude strikes me as somebody completely brainrotted by games like Celeste and thinks everything needs to be a 'quirky little indie title'. There is a REASON 99% of these sorts of indie games crash and burn on arrival, and only the scant few who actually innovate succeed. This shit ain't innovative.
i can definitely agree with you on the overthinking part. when I saw the part where he proposes that sonic needs all these different moves with different input combinations instead of just rolling into a ball when he jumps I was just baffled.

Yeah I remember this video. He had somewhat decent ideas for an orignal game (which I'm pretty sure he actually tried to make) and he clearly put a lot of effort into this, so I did respect that. But, this was so far away from anything even resembling Sonic that it just falls apart so badly.
It's actually kind of funny how some his ideas for Sonic as a character did make into the Sonic movie. How he's wide-eyed, vulnerable, un-sure about the journey ahead and is often running away rather than running towards. A lot is spot on, but the movie still understood fundamental aspects of Sonic as a character, hence why it works while this doesn't.
The movie was also essentially an origin story for Sonic compared to how most games are the character as already established, so a lack of the same confidence isn't bizarre or incongruous for the character with the caveat that he's expected to reach that point eventually.
The movie's version was done WAAAAY better, since it's an origin story. Sonic still has that cocky attitude that's synonymous with the character, but he still isn't as good as the game's version. At the end of the movie, Sonic's closer to his game counterpart, and I'm sure that if the movie gets a sequel it will have a way more accurate Sonic.

The movie was just as bad an interpretation of Sonic as this is, wouldn't be surprised if Paramount took this video as inspiration. To think the movie is fine but this is bad and wrong is hypocritical at best. Sonic being like that, origin story or not, defeats the purpose of Sonic as a character. The movie did it just as poorly as this, it did _not_ understand Sonic as a character _at all,_ he acts nothing like Sonic the whole time, he doesn't even develop into Sonic by the end, he gets fucking adopted and lives in a house like a baby, how is that anything like Sonic at all? It's just some vapid corporate attempt at making Sonic cuter and more marketable to the drooling, minion watching cinema audience who have no prior knowledge of the series. That's why this video is so aggravating, because it's so fake and corporate and he clearly has zero real passion or knowledge about Sonic at all. The movie had nothing to do with Sonic outside of imagery and branding, and so does this guys shitty pitch. Sick of people putting that basic, copy paste, Hollywood schlock movie on a pedestal just because the studio pulled some terrible design marketing stunt, which by the way, sent their animation company into bankruptcy and overworked all their animators by getting them to fix their idiotic decision. Now that I think about this, this could work as a really good spinoff game for Tails, the whole thing about him being cautious and having to use what he has to get out alive would work for him, mainly the boss idea to have a boss use the electric shield to make a bunch of spikes hit him and defeat him sounds exactly like something Tails would do.
Now that you mention it, Tails game in this style could work. Sonic could've been captured and Tails, being Sonic's best friend, goes out to save him, taking only his wits, speed and his backpack full of tools so he can craft item monitors and gadgets from Rings for him to fight Eggman's forces with. Wouldn't be a good SONIC game, but it wouldn't try to be. It'd be trying to be its own thing. Something separate from the main Sonic experience as it tries to establish an identity.

Sonic Mania pretty much proved all of this wrong. What fans want is more of the same but expanded in ways that benefit the game design. Redesigning Sonic into another character and game and demographic and using faulty charts and scaring the original fans away isnt the solution.

When I saw the Sonic movie in theaters last year, it was absolutely packed with kids. These kids had Sonic T-shirts on, they were jumping up and down when they entered the theater, and went nuts when Tails showed up at the end. Sonic still appeals to kids, it's just hard to see that when the internet reinforces the stereotype that all kids play are Fortnite and Among Us just because those games have active internet audiences due to their multiplayer nature.

His okay criticisms against Sonic and the his completely outlandish solutions feel like they’re coming from the minds of two completely separate people, absolutely none of the points he makes supports his nonsensical direction. I can understand why the original creator took down the video, but honestly I feel it should be kept up as a testament to the lengths that hubris will take you.

They're dying due to a lack of polish when Sonic 2006 was released. The writing was all over the place. Sonic 2006 tried too hard to be serious and was muck with mundane game play and lack of polish (glitches everywhere, some game breaking). Sonic 2006 arguably killed the series. When your next flagship installment sinks, it leaves a bad taste in everyone's collective memory.
Newer Sonic games are too linear. They are pretty much on a single track when even the oldest Sonic games rewarded exploration in some shape or form. Sonic the Werehog was likely the best out of all the modern sonic games if you were able to skip all the werehog stages.
Sonic Mania arguably is a throwback and not really an expansion of modern Sonic.
Now people are saying that 2006 was ambitious while the games that were received good (Colors and Generations) weren't good at all. Le sigh.
Heck despite only two average games coming out( lost world & forces) that’s enough for people to say this was the worst decade for sonic.

It would maybe be good for a one-off alternate universe game.
