    Genuinely one of Chibnall's best episodes. Like Resolution and Haunting of Villa Diodati it pits Thirteen against an iconic foe against her usual element without her companions, and these are probably the best Sontarans since Styre. The Sontaran plot was brilliantly balanced between the Doctor and Dan dealing with the Sontarans across two time zones and the wider Swarm arc.

    My favourite line in the episode.. 'I wanted to ride a Horse.' I mean c'mon that line laughed my ass off completely the second I heard Skaak say that, Also I like that neat callback to 'The Time Warrior' when Skaak mentions Linx.

    • @DalekTheSupreme
      @DalekTheSupreme 2 роки тому +10

      The fact that Linx planting his stupid little flag in front of people too primitive to understand the significance of it is considered an important moment in Sontaran history is just so perfectly in character for them.

    A thumbs up for the "she'd got a new jacket" smithers clip use alone.
    It's a great episode. The production is spectacular. I hope folks who are seeing the value of this seasons storytelling will reapprase the earlier seasons that were unduly hated.

    I hadn't been concerned about infinite regenerations so much as the Master's ability to singlehandedly destroy the Citadel and defeat the rest of the Time Lords seemingly without raising a sweat, when the combined might of all the Daleks couldn't do it. Why is nobody outraged about *that*?

    • @tTaseric
      @tTaseric 2 роки тому

      Because he's the Master.
      He's taken over Earth multiple times with ease despite the Daleks continuously failing to do. The Master knows the Citadel, he knows how to exploit things, he knows what weapons to use, and he's just smart in ways that the Daleks are not.
      Plus, this current incarnation of the Master seems to be incredibly adept at manipulation and espionage, more so than usual. When you consider the state that Gallifrey was in last time we saw it, it would be extremely easy for the Master to exploit and infiltrate it again.
      Also, we don't know how long it took the Master to destroy Gallifrey, or how many regenerations it took him. Come to think of it, was it ever confirmed he did it singlehandedly either?
      Obviously, most of these questions should have been answered in Series 12, but I feel like Sacha Dhawan's performance really sold the fact that he destroyed Gallifrey

      @dirrdevil 11 місяців тому

      Exactly this. Brilliant point.

    • @dirrdevil
      @dirrdevil 11 місяців тому

      Yet during the Time War itself, the Master chose to hide because the Time Lords & Daleks themselves were so fearsome a foe. "Being smart" is not an explanation. Conquering Earth (the Master has only done this temporarily, I might add) is something that the Daleks have done twice (temporarily as well) and has been done by most alien invaders (any alien species capable enough to travel the cosmos to reach Earth is going to be advanced enough to defeat modern Earth), and being able to conquer Earth is not the same as the ability to destroy Gallifrey.@@tTaseric

    • @tTaseric
      @tTaseric 10 місяців тому

      @@dirrdevilThe Master ran when faced with a significant victory from the Dalek Emperor, and hid so the Time Lords wouldn't be able to drag him back into the war. He didn't run and hide because the Time Lords were so powerful and scary, at least not specifically.
      But the Time Lords were different during the war. Far worse than what they were before or after. AND the Doctor did exile both Rassilon and the High Council before leaving the final time. The planet was not in a good state at all.
      The reason I bring up Earth is that it shows the Master can be patient with his schemes, and is capable of coordinating chaos on a planetary scale.
      The Master would (literally) have all the time in the universe to think of something.

    Karvanista did mention that he was sent down to Earth by his people because he got the blame for the Sontarans getting through before the barrier had been sealed, expressing dismay at usually getting the blame for things. And I'm never going to complain at getting to see more of Karvanista! Brilliant episode, I'm absolutely loving Flux so far and I can't wait for toight's episode (which as of writing is less than an hour away!)

      @@tobylerone4285 I thought it was quite a unique, creative episode that answered some questions (some that are even asked within the same episode) while also presenting new and interesting questions that we'll definitely see explored in the next few episodes. We also got some interesting backstory for Vinder and met one of my favourite characters from this series: Bel, who is a part of that and I absolutely adored her character! It was very timey wimey but I really enjoyed that aspect, and on rewatch it wasn't as confusing as I thought since I noticed a lot of stuff I didn't notice before. I thought it was quite a clever episode! And it's got me more intrigued for what's to come - I'm not sure if it's my favourite episode overall, I'm not going to decide that until the series is over though I could see this sunday's episode being the best one so far... I really liked this one. Loved seeing the Sontarans after, what, thirteen years of them being a joke? I liked how they tried to bring attention to Mary Seacole and the Crimean War which I don’t think are really common knowledge among the general public outside of a few things. The acting was pretty good here, and the effects were decent, and, to cycle back, I loved the use of the Sontarans! I loved the one guy they caught and how he tried to big himself up with: “I was assaulted by a flying spherical object!” But then Seacole says, “Hit in the back by a cannonball.” And how another one just picked the time period because they wanted to ride a horse. I also think Seacole felt very honest. She didn’t feel like a caricature of a historical person, which, I think, many of these kinds of episodes do.

    I REALLY hope this isn't an exception. I liked Series 11 and 12, but even I can't deny how far Demons of the Punjab and The Haunting of Villa Diodati were above them respectively. I hope the quality of this episode becomes the standard for the rest of the show, despite its flaws, rather than being that one-off amazing story that defines its entire series.
    In my opinion, this episode is probably the single most 'Doctor Who' episode of the show ever broadcast. If you want a single episode to summarise what Doctor Who is, why it's important, and why people love it, you'll have War of the Sontarans.
    As for the Sontaran's supposed incompetence in Liverpool, I think it was perfect.
    They're a parody of Imperialism and how mega-military superpowers expand and invade countries without thought. It makes perfect sense that they'd be incompetent at actually occupying and policing their new land, because when is any expanding nation?

    Chibnall got the Sontarans down to a tee and the Doctor felt the most Doctor in terms of characterization for the entire plot.

    Along with Villa Diodati, this episode probably has the best characterisation of the 13th Doctor of the era. She’s authoritative, cunning, and witty. It’s odd how she’s more like the Doctor in scenes where her companions are absent, almost like she’s putting on a false persona around them. I guess that’s kind of what they were going for with the whole honesty arc with Yaz, but it wasn’t executed the greatest sadly

    This was a killer episode and made me wish that the prior Chibnall seasons were like this. I like the call back to Lynx. I also like the way Dan was infiltrating the Sontaran's base. Reminded me of when Donna did and who can forget Donna's, "back of the neck" line. Karvanista, coming to save the day, was awesome. Really had me excited. Dan's father and mother combined, made me think of Wilfred Mott. These three Cenobitesque characters, have me wondering if they ever came across the celestials and the weeping angels. I can assume they have. Will this all have any connection to the timeless child storyline? It will be interesting to see. I really want the Master to come into this. I would love a faceoff between him and the head of this new trio, who apparently has confronted the Doctor before. I doubt the theories, that this could be the Master. The new Tardis team, well new with Dan, but it's so much better than the prior team, although Yaz is part of that prior, but her experience with the Doctor has really paid off and her character has improved. Dan really is taking to this, but I assume he's been the rough end of human life and is only transferring that experience over to the alien rough side. All in all, this was a great episode. With a cliffhanger no less, but I wish they didn't give bits to the next episodes, because it takes away from the cliffhanger. Final notes. That one Sontaran, the captured one, gave off Strax like vibes. Also, the use of Venusian Aikido, whenever it's reintroduced, is always a nice call back to the 3rd Doctor. Mary Seacole's color attire, had that fugitive Doctor vibe. The released image of her in front of the Tardis, is perfect. It fits her.

    "Is finally arriving" Yeah, sadly thats an issue we've had for several of the 'modern' era Doctors. The writers don't seem to appreciate that it takes a fair old time for not only the actors but the writers to really get a handle on a new Doctor and settle in. Usually by the time go they enter their final season, and only then they appear to properly understand whats what and it shows. This was a vast improvement to the previous episode. Still cannot be arsed with Mr and Mrs Swarm I'm afraid in fact my heart sank when the story returned to them. The actor is good, but his dialog comes cross as Who villain by numbers and it bored me quite frankly and unlike your good self I thought the make up was very ho hum. Poor old 'Dog Boys' make up was awful. Looking like it belonged in an old time Crackerjack play rather then a modern tv show. I cringe every time I looked at him. lol
    Oh and tonights episode I thought was bloody awful. lol Back to being a rushed mess again. The trailer for next week looks promising though.

    The whole Lupari thing doesn't make sense to me. Are they time travelers? Is it because Flux is messing with the universe. I assumed they're guarding 2023 Earth and its human inhabitants, and perhaps Kavenista (spelling?) is protecting Dan in this time period solely because Dan has traveled in time. My guess is there is no Lupari in the time period of the Crimean War. But Flux puts the whole thing into flux and it's a silly idea to have an entire alien race protect our human race anyways.

    I didn’t really like this one. I found it equal parts dull and emotionally hollow.
    But the aspect I want to focus on is this re-design and the toxic nostalgic mentality that I feel motivated it, which then feeds into this continual, imo baffling, praise Chibnall gets for his writing of established villains.
    Now, perhaps my thoughts that the “Classic” design looked lame anyway, has influenced this interpretation, but the choice to go back to the Classic Who armour also drives home the superficial, pandering nature of a lot of Chibnall’s creative choices.
    Case in point, the Sontarans.
    The Sontarans originally were just a name given to us by a member of their species, Linx. A seemingly unremarkable one at that from his POV. The bigging up of him here feels like a very for-fans-only moment, which doesn’t make sense in-universe.
    The lame design only worked in The Time Warrior’s because it was a joke that this advanced alien looked conspicuously like one of our European knights. It was justified there, further signalling that the Sontarans were never met to be this big of a deal in the first place.
    Here, however, Chibnall fannishly treats the Sontarans with something boarding on respect, which is a gross misunderstanding of them and how they’ve been represented up to this point. But because memory is a fickle thing and nostalgia reigns supreme, fans are praising it to high heaven for shamelessly repeating the dated sensibilities of old teley rather than forging its own path. The same applies to his handling of other recognisable mainstays.
    So yes, Chibnall can write a decent, bare bones facsimile of a Sontaran or the Daleks or the Master, but when it comes to doing new, interesting things with them, he shies away.
    To not end on a completely negative note, the production, especially for being made during a pandemic, is insanely good and the variety is at least nice. I just wish the actual story being told so far was worth the effort clearly being put in to make to broadcast.

    7:20 Sorry but I can't agree with you on that. That line feels like something Strax would say. You know, the joke individual of the species!

    I am sick and tired of nWho Doctors whining and moralising over things that the Classic Doctors did on a daily basis. Not only does it weaken the character it insults the superior predecessor series AGAIN.

    To add on the ageism point, I don’t think it’s that bad in this case. They’re minor characters anyway, and I don’t begrudge them for not bothering to get two seventy year olds for about five minutes of screen time during a pandemic which would put them at risk. I think they looked enough, and I’d be a hypocrite if I thought it was a problem. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is one of my favourite movies, but that film has Sean Connery playing Harrison Ford’s father, despite there only being a twelve year age gap, and Henry Jones plays a more significant role in that film than Dan’s parents in this.
    This was just a long winded way of saying, “I don’t care.”

    What annoys me its the lack of empathy of the Doctor : i explain , the doctor have liver more than a 1000 years and she cant' understand that people not gonna belive her just because she telle them not do it . Second : she is angry at the commander for the revenge on the sontharan but again he is just a human who live mayber for what ? 40, 50 years ? of cours he wants revenge. Th doctor acts so condescending and act she never make mistakes , or never take revenge on people . She is acte like mary sue and its annoying.

    The story felt bland, the sontaran faces look weird and the armour doesn’t fit into the classic era. Kaagh from the Sarah Jane adventures is a good example that sontarans can survive for long periods of time without their native nutrients.
