  • An audio book from the content of the largest figure in history to play a part in opening the West to Buddhism. The eminent Zen author, D.T. Suzuki gives his readers the very heart of Zen teaching, which was edited by William Barrett. Zen Buddhism includes a basic historical background as well as a thorough overview of the techniques for Zen practice. Concepts and terminology such as satori and koans, as well as the various elements of this philosophy are all given clear explanations. But while Suzuki takes nothing for granted in the reader's understanding of the fundamentals, he does not give a merely rudimentary overview. Each of the essays go far beyond other sources for their penetrating insights and timeless wisdom.
What is most important about D.T. Suzuki's work and what comes across so powerfully in these selections is his unparalleled ability to communicate the experiential aspect of Zen. The intensity here with which Zen philosophy comes to life is without parallel in the canon of Buddhist literature. Suzuki stands apart from all teachers before or since because of his exceptional ability to eloquently capture in words the seemingly inexpressible essence of Zen. (Produced/Read by Vincent Bagnall. I picked up this book for $1 at a bookstore sale about 10 years ago. It was the first of 100 or so books I've read on Buddhism and meditation since. This particular book was a bit too academic for my taste, but still a pleasure to read and certainly piqued my curiosity about what insights can be gleaned from a dedicated meditation practice.

Thank you for reading this work, especially with your captivating narration style. I first read this more than twenty years ago and have never been so confident that this was the closest humanity has ever gotten to truth.

Quote by Ryokan... Why do you so earnestly seek
    the truth in distant places?
Look for delusion and truth in the
    bottom of your own heart...

I visited D.T. Suzuki’s grave in Kita-Kamakura in September 1992. A Buddhist Nun gave me a container of water. She led me to his grave and motioned for me to pour the water on the stone.

When one has acknowledged that talking Zen by a Westerner is superficial, one ought not to even have started at all. This effort is as good as getting a fish to walk.

Better for people to see a failed walking fish than not to know what a fish is in the first place

It is quite a journey to understand it. Seems to require levels and gradual immersion from different perspectives within Zen.

I have often wondered if patience and Zen awareness coukd be quite similar but constancy might be better as a kind of dedication to what you love....so that understanding can have a chance.

When one acknowledged that thinking in East and West is binary, one might sustain from judging westerners or easterners or judging at all.
