  • Dropati should be in any list when it comes to our roots to the Baithak Gana. Therefore sharing one of her greatest songs from her Let's Sing & Dance with Dropati LP.
A song been done by many many artistes including the late Kanchan. This song links many of us with each other.
Guided by the great Sahadat Chedi on dholak.
    Enjoy!

Dropati dominated the Indian wedding scene in Trinidad in the late 60’s. Her LP served to preserve the art form so that other singers could use the authentic style as a base for their own later variations. In my mind her album also preserved the culture of the Indian Caribbean village for all posterity . I Still enjoy this collection as it takes me right back to when I was a child.

We have different versions of this song in fiji indian weddings ... didn't know it was sung in Trinidad

@@upashnachand7491 I am not surprised that this is sung in Fiji . The indentured workers originated from basically the same region .. UP / Bihar , with some from Madras ( Chennai ) . So the music traditions among the descendants in Trinidad , Guyana , Surinam , Jamaica , the smaller islands in the Caribbean , Belize , Mauritius , South Africa and Fiji should be quite similar . We in this diaspora have more in common with each other than many realize.

@@tigalbaby thanks for the information. Based on the folk songs and movies I assumed that my descendants were from Bihar and now your comments confirm my assumption. Thanks 😊

@@upashnachand7491 I have seen some clips of indo Fijian weddings . They are almost identical to the Trinidad weddings. The diaspora has certainly preserved the cultural traditions as they were practiced 150 years ago in rural Bihar .
