I have to admit I've never been a fan of the flame style blades on Greatswords but you've sold me on this model, it's a beauty! Great review!
What's the purpose of a flame style blade.
at first i was Fairly certin it was so the wound would bleed more or take more time to heal but after some quick googling it seems like it was mostly an aesthetic choice. Some sources say that it made the blade more durable but I'm not sure the truth to that. not 100% so feel free to correct me if you find out otherwise
@@skizmark5269 I did a couple searches myself, my findings show that flame style blades were a mix of aesthetic choice and were meant to cause unpleasant vibrations for the opponent when parrying.
@@hoop6988 they also make ugly cuts that are hard to heal from.

Such swords are the crown of the development of edged weapons.

I have the No. 4 Montante I that was pictured next to the doppelhander, I also have a longsword from them, Regenyei really do make some good swords.

Mine arrived today, truly a magnificent piece. It quite a heavy boi though, my forearms are pumped after only a few minutes of slow to moderate "swinging". This thing sleeps in my bed tonight.

I have a similarly wobbly feder from Regenyei and while it's not noticeable by itself, it's definitely a factor in the bind. Gorgeous sword.

Regenyei’s pricing is incredibly reasonable and have great customizability, I hope to get the funds for a sharp great sword from them in the near future.

... this is true engineering for its era. Firstly, the combination of spear and sword into one piece-of-technology is inspired. I can only imagine how this would have performed in the hands of a master on the battlefield. By your demonstration... I assume quite-well. Secondly, and most importantly, the flamberge-design is the work of a genius. Not discounting the incredible skill necessary to forge... the wave-form in this blade bridges the gap between the cutting-power of eastern-swords and the length and flexibility of the western-ones. Geometry that behaves as a curved-sword while mainting a net-level of linearity is certainly stunning. It may have some resonance issues (speculative), but these must be small. This style of sword does not receive enough credit, and this design you're wielding must be approaching or contending for the title of "King of The Battlefield"...

I love 2 handed swords but no-matter how much I use one I can never get a feel for its movement, for it to weigh that much even after you've removed material from the blade just never makes sense to me when I pick one up.
I love seeing them though, beautiful and so much fun to spar against 🙂
It's all about knowing how to use the mometum of it. Big, circular movements. I got a Regenyei Zweihänder, which I think they've taken out of production. It's 179cm and 3.2kgs, I think. It's a bit taller than I am, I'm fairly fit, and I use it for longsword drills. I'm nowhere near as fluid or fast as Björn is, but he's also a bit taller and meatier than I am. I used to tire after using it for 15 mins on either side, but you need to let the momentum build up for your next swing, and use the hilt and back hand to direct more than the front hand, which is normally the hand you use to guide.
It's quite fun to use, and it does help with your wielding other weapons. I used to think longswords had some weight to them, now they feel like toothpicks :)

Wow , what a monster. I'm used to handling a little 900 gram shashka , and that gives me a good workout. That sword would be like holding almost 4 shaska's at once!! Definitely too large for my 150 pound body. Must be very annoying to sharpen it though? Very nice. Cheers
You can get special round or halfround sharpening bits so not as difficult as you may think but certainly time consuming
@@lukeevans1945thanks for the info. I never heard of these? Where can i find one? I have lots of trouble sharpening. Even with a bench grinder. It would be much easier with a small sharpening stone that's angled at 22.5 degrees.

I do however have a question regarding your steel weaponry, regardless of category, how do you take care of it ? What kind of maintenance and how regularly do you do it to keep them in good shape ?

Just oil it with a cloth a bit after use, every time..thats it. If you have some rust shadows sand it with fine paper or steelwool :)

What a beauty! Do you know if the factory offers this blade sharpened? Not to be too stereotypically UA-cam here but I would genuinely be interested how the blade shape changes cutting performance. Are there historical sources talking about the benefit for this shape?
Yes definitely, you can add a "sharp edge and pointy tip" option. I provided a link to the blade in my vid description.
Regarding the blade shape...there are no contemporary descriptions why they are waved. In my opinion the serrated or wave-shaped blade is particularly suitable to cut through light armor such as leather or fabric - in addition to its threatening overall appearance. While a straight blade can slip off more easily, a serrated edge bites into the material to be cut much more easily. Just like bread with a hard crust that is easier to cut with a bread knife than with a straight, smooth blade.

Ah interesting. I bet you are correct but it must have increased cost significantly. Also the maintenance of sharpening would be significant. Do you know how they were stored or carried? Do the manuscripts give suggestions?

The thumbnail is very funny to me since I know that the sword has like 1.8m and looks like a toy in the hands of a beast like you. How is it going to look like when a little man like me is going to get it XD

A machine, if not someone swung a wooden baseball bat for 250-280 mph. With that speed and force the bat was broken without hitting anything, but the air itself. Will a thin sword like this snap or bend too much when swinging with that pressure?
It is not the air or its resistance that causes the baseball bat to break, but the mass inertia during acceleration. But here it is of course important to know over which path and time something is accelerated. And here there are certainly parameters that also cause blades to break. To give an accurate answer, the question is unfortunately a bit too vague.
Just out of curiosity, why are you asking yourself this?
@ I just imagine a sword of similar shape and size to this, but with an inch more for blade width. Edges still as sharp, but with a half inch thick core. Also, a half inch thicker tang/handle. Extremely hard, but still very durable instead of brittle. The result might be double the weight or more, however it feels stable. Even if it wiggles or wobbles at least not enough for me to notice it. Like the wings of a plane, spinning helicopter blades, or fins of a rocket going at that speed. Even if I knew what I wanted looked like, I'd still need the complicated materials to make the alloy for it. Things can be a nightmare to make.

Since the metal part is also the load-bearing part, it actually only plays an insignificant role in which form the wood is shaped around. It also feels very stable, do not worry, it will hold :)
Would this sword be a valid option for a total beginner? I am 192cm /80kg quite fit - working out and bouldering multiple times a week.

my purchase of the Spadone No.3. I would guess it would be a good choice - not to heavy to start with. I have already checked with Falko about it.
Now after I have watched your video a second time am thinking maybe I should start right away with a big one.

A spadone is just something completely different from a battle sword. If you want to fence Iberian sources, have desire for dynamic, fast strikes, then you should stay with your order. If you want to discover the battle sword for yourself, this means other movement patterns, and significantly fewer fencing sources, or actually no source at all, than go for that beast. I personally find battle swords more interesting, because let's face it, spadones are just slightly larger longswords ;)
But do not misunderstand, with battle swords can also be fenced Iberian Reglas. However, it takes more effort, but forces you to be more precise. Spadones are much more forgiving, but they are also made for that. For civilian use, they are ultimately more efficient.

May I ask how the difference is between handling this and your other Battleswords from the videos before?
In my Fundamental video, I use one that is almost twice as heavy. In contrast, this one is really easy to swing. Admittedly, the heavier one is also a bit too heavy. In my landsknecht I also use a Regenyei with a few hundred grams less weight. This one is a really good compromise for when you want something big and heavy, but still easy to handle.

May I ask, is it ok to use zweihander that taller than user? Or it should height as user's chin?
Could be a bit taller if you want and can still handle that but regular size is a height between chin and scalp :)

wow I am surprised on how stiff that blade is for it's size, I think I would go for the n.2 flamberge though I am not sure I could handle a sword taller than me
No. 2 is also a nice one. One of my students used it for years and he is really satisfied :)

besitze selber zwei custom regenyei langschwerter... finde ich qualitativ wirklich sehr gut! bin ich hoch zufrieden mit! einzig die scheiden die regenyei anbietet finde ich echt nicht gut... viel zu groß, viel zu dick und meine passt leider überhaupt nicht zum Schwert.... ein montante steht auch definitiv noch auf meiner Liste:) lg

So what was the point of flamberges again?
Mostly they were used in formations, they would enter the opposing forces ranks of pikes and knock them aside to open gaps in the defense. They could also be used to lock down a strategic location like a narrow bridge or breach in a wall, the huge circular swings are devastating and quite hard to Parry and get around if the person using it knew their stuff.

@@NarrowKilla There's not a lot of reasoning given, some speculate that the waving shape helped bite into your opponent better, say like cutting bread with a bread knife instead of a straight one, another is that it causes nasty vibrations through the opponents weapon, others think it was purely aesthetic (imposing and violent looking) and it's likely a combination of all three, some small benefits that may give you an advantage.

Have you considered the 200 and 300 kilogram Vikings and knights. Furthermore, the 400 kilogram Vikings were the most terrifying to come across. It's just basically a 300 or 400 kilogram man that can run and move around like normal.

They sell that one in Europe but can't ship to USA :( they do have Hema here that get there swords from Regenyei but not that same one they have similar but with a riveted handle & different pommel.
